Just got my V3 100volt Marty and now that I have 126 miles on it I just started feeling some play in the wheel. It's gotten worse in 3 days so now I will have to take mine apart. I'm glad you made these 2 videos. Thanks for giving me something to follow.
Wow. Already? That's a real bummer. I know many Monster owners who have not had to tighten the axle nuts, but unfortunately I also know some who have had to rather early, like you. I suspect Gotway doesn't always properly tighten them at the factory. A tip for you. The V3's have a tighter tolerance around the nut so you can't use a impact socket (the socket is too thick). Just buy a standard cheapo 24-mm socket and cut a slot in it with a grinder. Hopefully you just have to remove the side panels to do the work. The most time consuming part will be cutting the slot in a socket. I recently made one for a friend and it took maybe 15-minutes of work with a grinder and a cutting disk. Good luck.
@@ElectricUnicycles Yeah it sucks, I did 15 miles today and was in heaven but I felt the shift like a transmission shifting slightly. Unfortunately I don't have any of that equipment so this is going to be interesting
I ended up tackling the same problem by just tightening the nut, this seemed to work for a bit, but then it got loose again. Now I've tightened them again with Locktite, and it's held up over a 20 KM ride, no looseness whatsoever. Hope it stays that way.
~600-miles. I've ridden my Monster on lots of rough trails (heavy vibration, etc.). People that don't ride on rough paths much will probably never have a problem.
My v3 is doing it too...after I put weight on it though, it takes some force to get it to rock while still. I’m thinking it’ll get worse. We’re the shims the actual problem?
I currently have an inmotion v5f+, and am looking to upgrade to something with more range and top speed, but I don't have the workspace and technical expertise to conduct this level of maintenance. Should I avoid a gotway wheel in this scenario?
Statistically, I think you should probably avoid Gotway unless you buy from a great dealer that would support you. Really depends on how you want to use the wheel. I must say that the new Inmotion V10F looks like a perfect upgrade option for you. That being said, every wheel has the possibility of developing problems. So in your case, buy from a reputable dealer if at all possible.
Thanks for the response! After reading several forums, I have to agree. I do like the higher specs of the Gotways, but I don't have the time, space, or expertise for the higher maintenance. I primarily use my v5f+ for transportation to and from work (Navy) and occasionally for shopping for less than a backpack-full worth of items/groceries (otherwise I just take the car). I need a dependable and reliable wheel (and safe, considering there are a few dangerous points on my commute path where I could potentially become impaled on objects to the side of the path if I were thrown off in that direction). I also want a larger wheel than 14". I've pretty much narrowed down my options between the KS-16S, KS-18S, and the newV10F (if it's available).
Good choices, although I suspect the KS18S may feel a bit big for your uses. Really, the 16-inch wheel is the perfect general purpose EUC. I think everyone should own that size before experimenting with the other varieties. If you can't wait a potential couple of months for the V10F, you can't go wrong with the KS16S. But I have the sense that the new V10F is a better wheel than the KS16S. I'm getting a loaner from Inmotion this week so I hope to put out a few videos on it very soon.
Thanks! I will keep an eye out for your video. I will need to wait until I get to Monterey first to make sure regional laws and NPS rules aren't going to be an obstacle before investing in another wheel anyways (plus, if I order a wheel now there isn't a guarantee that I will receive it before moving, which could potentially end up in a lost wheel or my package in someone else's possession).
"I don't have the workspace and technical expertise to conduct this level of maintenance. Should I avoid a gotway wheel in this scenario?" Not necessarily. I have had my MSuper V2, which I believe uses the same shim system, for 2 years, and it's as tight as day one. Bear in mind I don't ride it hard or on bumpy trails, so the type of usage probably makes a difference.
to you I give them ewheels.com, if they had left over I would be willing to buy them, since I do not see that they sell in china this and gotway itself does not give me solutions

ElectricUnicycles hehe good one! Yeah... Got a other acm angel got 2000 km on it. Now going to buy a monster next month. What do you like better monster or acm 2?
Well, I'm really happy that I own a Monster, but it's more of a specialized wheel in my opinion. The ACM2 (and ACM in general) is my favorite wheel - so fun to ride in the streets and mountains. But you already have the ACM. You'll really enjoy the Monster - super comfortable cruising wheel.
That slop or play is ever from new! I believe it has nothing to do with the “shim” or any nut that is loose but the Motor timing and hall sensor and firmware algorithm! You would notice that this slop has disappear fm the new Tesla!
I agree that the slop at the end is 'normal'. However, there was much more slop before I replaced the shims. Trust me, that condition was not normal. It got much worse during the last couple hundred miles.
yo, this video has a high pitched whistle in it like the entire time. That's like 5 seconds in any audio editor to get rid of, and is super annoying and distracts.
ElectricUnicycles good to hear, I’m on a group buy for a 3100wh v3 monster, so I’m preparing myself. If you ever ride in NYC lemme know, our little group of riders has become 800+ nyceboarding.com

In my humble opinion, the only thing Gotway forgot we’re lock washers.
Hi Marty,
Do you know if Gotway has fixed this issue with the Monster shims. Do new wheels still have this problem? Thanks for making these videos.
Marty! Can you let us know what type of socket you used that had the wire cutout?
An angle grinder was used to cut a slot in a standard 24mm socket.
After how many Miles did this happen
~600-miles. I've ridden my Monster on lots of rough trails (heavy vibration, etc.). People that don't ride on rough paths much will probably never have a problem.
Seems to me that KingSong's axel attachment is FAR superior!...isn't it?
Yes, KingSong's method is much better. Too bad they don't make a 2400wh 22-inch wheel.
Is that a o2 sensor socket? And what size I’m attempting this right now!
It's a 24mm socket. Standard socket that had a notch cut out of it with an angle grinder.
great vid
Thanks

No, I actually never had any damaged shims. The nut was loose though. I later discovered that I also had a broken motor-axle "key".
@@ElectricUnicycles thank you Marty. It was a loose axle nut. Now the cooling fans are running loudly. I just replaced them last month.
Where did you buy the tool to lose the axle nut?
A friend made it for me.

Hi!!!
Where can I buy this tool? 14:11
You can't. This is a custom made socket - a slot was cut into the side of it.
ok thanks!
and the Axle Shims from gotway acm?
You may be able to buy shims from your dealer or direct from China.

Quality control of gotway really high... Sorry Marty but not really... My acm broke on me because of bad firmware of the pcb..
My Quality Control comment was a joke, sure to be appreciated by all Gotway owners :-) Sorry to hear about your ACM.

Sorry, not much I can do about it a couple of years later. All I can suggest is not to watch the video.
@@ElectricUnicycles lol, fair, I just meant for the future, it's worth getting rid of it. There are not enough gotway breakdowns on youtube.
