One of the few bands that brings tears to my eyes when I hear them. The lead singer is so intense and full of passion and they are one of the greatest live acts ever. In the 80s, in the midst of spandex pants and men with big hair and make up these guys blew up and dominated the scene doing their own thing, were giants above everyone else at the time. @@StephanieLee48 oh yeah, I've seen recording of this. It's a little famous. I think they used a Harlem Choir. It's very powerful in sound and feeling. It's not the only time they use full choirs in their music.
If you don't know the history of this band , they started off at the end of the punk scene in Ireland, their first hit was Sunday Bloody Sunday. An anti-war protest song about the IRA bombing era they grew up in.
As their career progressed though, they really displayed an enamor with black culture and music in America. This includes a song specifically about MLK and a pretty decent duet with BB (When Love Comes to Town) and several recordings with the Harlem Choir.

This band does enjoy the style of black American gospel, they adapt it frequently, and really I think they do a fair job, but it's a powerful music style that's hard to fail (although there's some bad butchers of it in rock and pop)
U2 had some big chops in those old days. That guitar hit a tension through the whole song that sort of contradicts the release and strength of the lyrics. That's a good thing in this case though.

Many years later I learned they were actually from Ireland

I have been a U2 fan for just about 40 years now. It wasn't until their Joshua Tree album though, that I realized that they were basically a Christian Rock band, one that didn't adhere to the musical or lyrical formulas of that genre, but instead were just about the best Rock songwriters/musicians on the planet. Going back through their first several albums you'll find at least half of their songs include references to the Bible and Christianity. At concerts they would close with '40' and tens of thousands of young people would knowingly or not be chanting in reference to Psalm 40 as we finally left the building. Thank you both. I agree with your assessment of this song. I grew up in Las Vegas so I have always loved the video. They Filmed this at 2 o’clock in the morning on Fremont Street. I was in Las Vegas (downtown) hanging out with my Uncle when they filmed this video and was fortunate enough to meet the entire band during filming.....needless to say U2 instantly became my favorite band....this wasn't filmed on "The Strip"
I lived in Las Vegas when they made this video. Kinda nailed a lot of us in Vegas at that time. But you nailed your analysis, many of us lost that way, in my case I was in my 20's, and really trying to find something, just not sure of what. If you notice in the video, they're being escorted by Las Vegas Metro, Downtown was a very ruff place back then.

You broke this down in a way that I'd never taken it. It is a spiritual, and there is a version from Rattle and Hum where they do sing with a Gospel choir (very good!), but I never saw it about the subject trying to fill something. I always took it as some external thing being missing. I always took it as there is this external idea of God that is presented to you in a fairly technical way if you grow up with any religious training at all, but he keeps missing that when he goes looking for it. Like maybe God is a lot more mysterious than we're taught in Sunday school, and it's hard to see him when you are frantically searching, using a formula that someone handed you. But I like your analysis better. It's probably closer to the truth than my clunky explanation. I've listened to this song a thousand times, and you just gave me new eyes and new ears. You are a wise woman, and a LUCKY man. Thank you.

It's a prayer that is saying I have looked in all of these places that have offered so much in terms of happiness, but I haven't found what I'm looking for there. I have even looked to God for happiness and satisfaction, but I haven't found what I'm looking for there either.
What is it we are looking for? And where do we think we are going to find it?
Our lives are going to be hard, and in many ways will not give us what we want. We have to look for those things that will mean the most to us in the long run.
Do we have a family? Do we have a grand child? Do we have a wife or husband? Or do we have a special pet? Where can we find what we're looking for when we keep looking in the places that we THINK we'll find it, when what we're looking for is inside our hearts?
To me it’s spiritual for sure....
I love the reaction and the analysis. The Bible teaches us to forgive others and that's hard enough as is. What's even harder is learning how to forgive ourselves for what we have done in the past. Only thru great effort can we achieve it 💪

Have a look at their song 'one' but not the TH-cam boring version try to find the original original I think it was in monochrome and featured wild animals in Africa and other stuff- I can't remember the specifics but it was in 1994 - working out in the gym watching and listening to early days TV music channels on monitors - To me its the only decent song they made - Keep sipping guys!
