This is one of my favorite songs ever! The third verse especially when he says “You broke the bonds and loosed the chains, carried the cross and all my shame, all my shame… you know I believe it” … Pretty sure he’s talking about Jesus Christ there. He’s also mentioned in “Pride (In the Name of Love)” when he refers to “one man betrayed with a kiss”

Until the End of the World has strong Jesus/Judas allusions too.

    • @Tesses0927

Yes, a lot of spiritual/christian undertones to his lyrics....I think it shows a man searching and maybe conflicted about what he sees in the world. Take some of the lyrics from "One" ......You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law.
You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on to what you got, when all you got is hurt.
One love, one blood, one life, you got to do what you should.
One life with each other: sisters, brothers.
One life, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
      One, one.

In my opinion, this album, Joshua Tree was U2 at their peak! For live albums, Under a Blood Red Sky, and Rattle & Hum, are not to be missed. I saw them live during the tour for this album. It was in in a 15,000 seat Sports Arena, but they made me feel like I was in a beer bar. Bono is an amazing fellow. Blood Red Sky was recorded at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Rattle & Hum has some cool collaborations, with A Gospel Choir in Harlem, as well as songs with B.B.KIng, and Bob Dylan. Start Diggin' Son...

Devin, you're looking at about 20 great songs by U2. But "One" is a song that will get in your soul and form tears in your eyes. And you'll wonder how you lived so long without it in your life.

“One” saved my life, when it came out. I was at basic training and came home to discover that my gf cheated on me. I had planned to propose upon my return. Instead, I found myself alone and in a dark place. I was minutes from a very final choice, when “one” came in the radio. That and “Under the bridge” from the RHCP’s shook my dark fog away and gave me strength. I’ll never forget it…

I just discovered U2 at the beginning of 2021 and they quickly became one of my favorite bands of all time. The entire Joshua Tree album is a masterpiece and you definitely need to check out Where The Streets Have No Name, With Or Without You and Bullet The Blue Sky from that album! If you want an amazing live performance Sunday Bloody Sunday at Red Rocks is incredible or "40" from Red Rocks is amazing too ("40" is actually directly based off of Psalm 40 and I believe they still play it in their live sets). Great reaction and I hope you delve more into this fantastic band!🤘🏻🔥🤜🏻🤛🏻

    🔥🔥🔥GREAT REACT!!!🔥🔥🔥
This song is about a spiritual crisis they were going through.
The U2 members are Christian believers, but like us all, they hit the spiritual “doldrums” and were begging for clarity and refreshment of their souls. Bono talks about this often and it is one of the most beautiful and vulnerable songs I’ve ever heard.
    This band is next-level, truly.

I'm a big fan of U2, and I'll recommend their classic "Sunday Bloody Sunday" (about the Bloody Sunday massacre in 1972 in Ireland) as one of their political songs and "Beautiful Day" as one of their more spiritual songs. Both pretty amazing.

  • @nianfiedler5291

Great reaction! Been a fan for 35 years. Yes, they are big time, in fact the biggest rock band in the world for decades, the longest running group with the same lineup in history. The Joshua Tree did win the Grammy in 1987. This was filmed in Vegas, I think it's Fremont street. Anyway, this album pulled together their post-punk roots, the atmospheric sounds of the previous album (The Unforgettable Fire) and them incorporating American roots and gospel music into their songs (like this one). For harder stuff from them - I Will Follow, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bullet The Blue Sky, Exit, God Part II, The Fly, Until The End of the World, Mofo, Gone, Vertigo. This is my second fave album of theirs. Achtung Baby in 1991 is pure perfection from beginning to end. Also, it's always good to react to them live. No one comes close.

This is actually my favorite song of all time. It is rooted deep as a gospel song of sorts. It's very spiritual as it is constantly searching for higher love but always experiences setbacks.
"This one makes distinct references to Jesus: "I believe in the kingdom... you broke the bonds and you loosed the chains" he is acknowledging salvation and yet he still hasn't found what he is looking for."

Have long been a fan of U2, one of the greatest bands ever. This is a nice intro, like you said, very smooth and delicate, they do rock harder on occasion. The entire Joshua Tree album is a masterpiece from start to finish. Their album War is quite good as well. Your next U2 song has to be Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bullet the Blue Sky, With or Without You, Vertigo, Elevation, or One. Definitely check out their live performances, they put on a fantastic show, I've seen them a couple of times. They chose the name for the ambiguity and open interpretation aspect of it. However, a U2 is a type of spy plane, and a U2 being shot down while doing recon deep in Soviet territory in 1960 is a large part of what started the Soviet Missile Crisis. Bono's real name is Paul Hewson, The Edge's is David Evans, and you are obviously correct as to who was who. As for the other two, bass player Adam was the guy in glasses, and drummer Larry was in what looked like a leather biker looking jacket, had sort of spiky blonde hair. Cheers!

U2 were the biggest rock band on the planet from 1987 to 1995 with the Joshua Tree album and global tour and then followed by Actung baby album and the zoo TV global tour. I first saw U2 at the Edinburgh playhouse in 1984 on their unforgettable fire tour . The building only held 3 thousand people price of concert ticket 6 pounds sterling . If you want to experience them live I suggest their RED ROCKS concert in Colorado US in 1983 them performing SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY , NEW YEARS DAY and 11'oCLOCK TICK TOCK also check out U2 LIVE AID performance at Wembley Stadium London England in 1985 where they perform their song BAD from the unforgettable fire album after this performance they became very quickly the biggest band in the world. Also check out U2 video of them playing WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME on top of a liquor store in downtown Los Angeles this was during their Joshua Tree tour in 1987 -1988

So cool to have seen them in 84! I would say U2 has been the biggest rock band in the world from 1987 (possibly 1984) through 2011, and I would argue still are. Hard to think of a rock band that is still putting out new albums (not greatest hits) that could sell out stadiums in any city around the world. Possibly Coldplay, but I wouldn’t really say they’re a “rock” band. They’ve had the number one tour every year they’ve toured from 87 to their last in one 2017. They’ve sold anywhere from 2 to 25 million copies of every album since 1983.

This is probably their biggest hit, but one could argue that "One" from Achtung Baby, "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "With or Without You" from the same album as this song, or even "Beautiful Day" (the weakest of those that I have listed) are as big or bigger. I'd say either this song or "One". Yes, there is nothing all that edgy or controversial in any of these songs, but that universality and easy radio rotation has a place. U2 filled that place for a better part of the 80s and 90s for sure.

Just caught your reaction...sorry man but I think you missed the lines 'You broke the bonds and loosed the chains, carried the cross and all my shame, you know I believe it...but I still haven't found what I'm looking for.' For me, as a believer, I think the song is about finding that thing, outside of love, peace and Christ, that gives you personal joy in life (ie painting, music, dancing etc. Nice reaction. I'll be looking for more

Edge has by far the most unique guitar sound of pretty much any rock guitarist ever. You can argue there are those better, but none for distinctive. Also, if you dive into U2 there are only about 40-50 songs worth your attention so gird up.

      Indespensible:
      Sunday Bloody Sunday
Where the Streets Have no name - rooftop video
      One - live performance video
Like I said, there are dozens but those are unmissable.
Given your faith, you should know that Bono (all of them I think but definitely Bono) is a believer as well at that influences a lot of his lyrics.
(by the way, there's a version of this song on the Rattle and Hum album (which had an accompanying "movie") preformed in Memphis with a gospel choir)
There's some religious influences particularly in "Until the End of the World"

most of my favorite groups, I can count maybe 10-15 songs I really like. Almost no one gets much beyond that rang. With U2 I can count at least 45 but I'll spare you the most recent albums, and star the ones I consider the very best:
      Sunday Bloody Sunday***
      New Years Day
      2 Hearts Beat as 1
      40
      Pride
      Bad***
Where the Streets Have No Name**
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For***
      With or Without You***
      Bullet the Blue Sky*
      Running to Stan Still**
      Desire
      Hawkmoon*
All Along the Watchtower (cover preformed live on Rattle and Hum)
      Silver and Gold
      Angel of Harlem*
      Love Comes to Town
      All I Want is You*
Even Better Than the Real Thing*
      One****
Until the End of the World***
      Mysterious Ways**
      Stay
      The Wanderer w/Johnny Cash
      Staring at the Sun
      Beautiful Day***
      Stuck in a Moment***
      Elevation*
      Walk On***
      Kite
      Vertigo
      Sometimes You Can't Make It
      City of Blinding Lights

U2 will get into your soul, brother! The U2 Rabbit Hole is HUGE! Check out their live video from the "Under a Blood Red Sky" performance of a song called "Gloria". "Gloria" is from their 1980 album, October, and it is a prayer. Gloria, as in "Gloria, in te domine, Gloria, exultate; Gloria, gloria, Oh Lord, loosen my lips...". Check it out!

Bono have been happy married since very young, I think his high school sweetheart. I'm a little older than U2 and Bono, I find him very sensous, although not outright good looking.

First time viewing your Chanel. I see your posters and can see you are a fellow believer in Christ (?). Check out Acrobat, great lyric , I get the take that the lyric is from the view point of a struggling believer. The other track is End Of The World. I always thought that track was ex lovers meeting years later at a party, but it seems it’s more Bono’s take on what could of been Judas point of view.
