A small point on logistics: the comparison in flint quality. British flints in muskets could fire only 6 times before they needed re-sharpening. American flints could fire 60 times before needing re-sharpening. The redcoats had an expression: "Yankee flint is as good as a glass of grog". Was going to take a Rail Road Vacation to Chattanooga & Area via Amtrak ( Boston -New York - Washington DC - Atlanta or Raleigh ); once there I would probably rent a Cab or Auto. But after getting the Round Trip Cost of three separate stops/trains ( $ 850.00 Plus ) and the bus to and from, which would take at least a day or two each way, I decided to go the less expensive route. Chattanooga had no Passenger Service nor Rail Service. So, Flew USA down and back - 30 minutes - from RI cost $145.00; Rental Car upgrade cost about $250.00 for the week; Motel was about $ 200.00 for 6/7 days. Of course, this was around 2000 -2005. Lot of Great Civil War History. All started after hearing song - " Chattanooga Choo Choo " . You'll need more than one day. Enjoy the Trip.
At Cowpens Tarleton sent his best cavalry dragoons ahead of the infantry, and Morgan was aware of this tactic setting up a trap with his sharpshooters. With his most experienced "skirmishers" out of action, like Lee at Gettysburg, Cornwallis was blind to what Washington was doing and got backed into the peninsula at Yorktown while the French turned back the British navy.
I’m proud to be from the Greensboro,NC area which is named after Nathaniel Greene and the sight of the battle of the guilford court house and we have so much around the city that is named because of the war
Maybe for the border you could have a note section that could add more insight about something you talk about it and might have forgot to mention or you found more about after the fact
You're a young guy. The series "Turn" seemed to get Washington's age right. The French Navy beat the British at Yorktown. Not only did Benedict Arnold gain the victory at Saratoga, he laid the ground-work for it by a delaying action down Lake Champlain. One of the more incredible "naval" accomplishments of the Revolution.
Idea: you could have a now-royalty-free painting/picture/etc of the subject in question as your background. I imagine that's a lot of extra effort but it might add an interesting feel to the video....
I imagined the black space be used for live corrections or clarifications during your videos. Or even updates to upcoming events or simple stuff. Keep up the insightful reactions.
honestly, as a brit I think the war for independence was lost on the British side from the start. The whole reason it started was due to British debt and taxes on the 13 colonies, so there was no way we would have had the money to keep up the war. it was also inevitable that the French, dutch and Spanish would jump in on the fight too, specifically the French as the 7 years war had just ended, which is also the cause for the debt the British faced and in turn the taxes etc. I think that it was honestly never going to the British, no matter what we had done. And to think that all of this can be rooted back to George Washington starting the French and Indian war all because he attacked a tiny French force at Jumonville Glen. Crazy how history just does that sometimes
Yes I totally agree with your thoughts on Arnold. With his home town 15 minutes from me, he is still remembered good and bad to this day. General Green from RI was definitely are best tactical and fighting commander
"War For America" by Piers Macksey. The real question should be why would anyone expect the British to win? This is the 18th Century and logistics were a nightmare for any European power---look at France and Haiti. Getting men, material and information proved to be a nightmare even with mastery of the ocean up until 1778 when France enters the war and later Spain joins in. After Saratoga, a strategic defeat, what started out as a colonial rebellion morphed into a world war, where British resources had to be parceled out to India, Canada, Gibraltar and the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. The British ceased fighting in the 13 Colonies 1781 but the war lasted for two more years. The British position was that the sugar islands were more valuable as was Gibraltar. Limited resources needed to be marshaled to protect valuable and strategic areas. Look at the documents and negations to finalize the Peace of Paris. Let's not kid ourselves for the rest of the world the rebellion in the colonies was nothing more than an opportunity to reverse the outcome of The Seven Years War
You really need to come to Massachusetts not only the Boston area but where i live Concord,Lexington etc. Lots to see , where Paul Revere was captured , Concord is almost as it was so long ago .
04:46 That's something that confused me. I learned that the war ended in 1784 but Washington's listed as becoming president in 1789. 18:30 It seems that the governments of these countries didn't consider the long-term consequences, especially France.
I realize that this video is a month old. I don’t mind the black bars personally but something you could do if you are using OBS to record is to repeat the video in two layers but have one take up the full black bar area, add a blur over the black bar area layer and then it will look like the full video is in the background but it’s blurred kind of hard to explain over text but you might get the idea.
I would just add that although there are some inaccuracies in the video, Armchair Historian’s other videos are higher quality in many ways. I hadn’t seen this video for a while since your reaction, and it does feel different from Armchair Historian’s later content. The later videos have more meat to them and are more nuanced in ways. If this one was interesting at all I would recommend the two videos by Armchair Historian on the Seven Years’ War, it goes much more in detail than this American revolution one.
I always had a question about royal families. So the house of Tutor was the royal family in power, but when a royal family comes to an end with no remaining members. What happens to the vacant throne? How is a new family put into power?
It's always an extension of the family. For example, when Queen Elizabeth I died (the final Tudor), the throne passed to the next in line, James I. He was a great grandson of Henry VIII's sister. Every monarch since then in England/Britain/UK has been a descendant of Henry VII (Henry VIII's father). The reason the family/dynasty name changes is because the male line of that family is no longer on the throne, so the dynasty name changes to the new male line. Technically this would mean that when Queen Elizabeth II dies, Charles would be the start of a new dynasty.
For sure add some small CTAs and other social handles on the bottom of the video. Or if you do a frame around your head put them above or below. Can have a place for sponsors too or link to your patreon in the actual vid instead of the description so it has more impressions. Could also put your logo on the screen or somehow incorporated into the frame you want to put around your head. Another idea is to put the name of the creator of the vid you’re reacting to on their video in smaller text. Idk just some ideas
On the black space around the video, although it would be extra work for you by being video specific, an idea would be that if you had particular thoughts on the video in question that require in depth analysis that would mess with the flow of the overall too much to say, you could place book or paper reccomedations for people to read into the background you would like to add but would take a lectures worth of talking to cover to the degree you would be happy with.
Whether or not Britain could actually send another army is very debatable: Britain tended to have a chronic shortage of soldiers in its wars (presumably because of it's focus on the navy,) and between fighting the Second Anglo-Mysore War, and around the world against France, it's far more likely that Britain simply had nothing to send that wouldn't risk losing something far more immediately lucrative.

The guerilla units didn't necessarily retreat when engaged. The very nature of guerilla warfare is to conduct quick attacks typified by speed, surprise, and violence of action usually upon a moving or temporarily halted target (ambush). The objective is to cause physical and psychological damage to the enemy by attacking at a time and place of the guerilla's choosing. Such operations seldom have the task of taking and holding ground.

I am VERY disappointed that Friedrich Wilhelm (Baron) von Steuben was only a brief footnote in this video. His importance as a General in the Continental Army is extremely underrated. It is because of him that the Continental Army became a REAL and respectful/disciplined and properly trained army.
I have never regarded Washington as a great general. Either in terms of field tactics or strategy. He had good help but without the French would have been in trouble.
Personally, I think the video you're reacting to should go all the way down to just behind your left shoulder. The rest of the screen should be a nature picture, but one that's not distractingly vibrant. Maybe a dark green grassy hill. Sorry I'm a year late making this suggestion.
If I could go to Chattanooga or any other historical site for that matter with this beautiful history man I’d have the time of my life. Would probably be the best day of nerding out to history ever. Want to make that happen one day.
Winter at Valley Forge may be a bit overhyped as far as bad winters during the Revolution go to be fair, but the first of my ancestors to come to America did end up losing a foot that winter to frostbite.
Washington's best decision as a general was ordering his troops not to loot or abuse civilians and strictly enforcing it. That eventually led to public opinion shifting against the British and losing hundreds of little skirmishes to local militias when they decentralized their troops.
Bernardo de Galvez was a Spanish military who helped the American revolutionary, he is one of the few honorary citizens of the USA. Few people know his story.
im a little envious that you're a lot closer to a lot of historic places and battles sites. i'm in illinois, there aren't many sites like those although there are a few from battles between native americans and colonial americans. sadly they don't get anywhere near the same kind of attention, it's the kind of history america just wants to forget about. for example the end of the so-called "blackhawk war" ended in a river in wisconsin when a steamboat with a cannon on it showed up and gunned down all the men, women and children trying to cross the river and head west. and they simply built a highway over it and forgot about it completely.
If you ever want to understand why people like Patton aren’t included on lists with Alexander, Caesar, or Napoleon: Napoleon was Patton and Washington. He was a brilliant, charismatic, battlefield commanded AND he was also a good s political leader.
Bayonet - a device which transforms a musket/rifle to a spear. Also, Chesapeake Bay, where the French Navy took revenge for their humiliating defeat at Quiberon Bay in the 7 years war.
He's actually considered to be a not so great historical youtuber. He gets a lot of things wrong or out or context etc. There are so many better quality channels.
Burgoyne was also a peacock and very vain. He felt that the Continental Army would flee. Many British generals had that belief. And yes the failure of the Royal Navy was the main reason for the Continental victory at Yorktown. The French also did a bit of invading of British territories elsewhere and spread them out. In the end the British gave up. They didn’t want to fight a prolonged war thousands of miles away across an ocean. They had just finished a very costly war doing just that.
Spain did a bit more than just attack Gibraltar with Bernardo de Gálvez's Gulf Coast Campaign, capturing British West Florida and threatening British East Florida (the 14th and 15th colonies). Loss of East Florida would put Britain's wealth producing Caribbean colonies under serious threat, which certainly had to factor into the British thinking post Yorktown.
6:35 Is it true that people in those days matured sooner mentally because of the relative harshness of their living conditions and their lower life expectancy? Meaning mentally Washington could be compared to a modern older general?
Two main points for Washington: he kept the Army intact & he did listen/consult with many of his immediate officers ( for good or for bad ). Overlooking Arnold at Saratoga pissed him off. Howe was Arrogant . French Fleet was the key to York Town. Colonial Tactics succeeded because they drew-out the war. We forget that the British screwed-up politically, and they were at odds/war with other European Nations especially France. One issue: Colonials were not referred to as Americans until the NW Territory was settled with Colonists after the War of 1812 - Treaty of Ghent ( 1814/1815 ). The Americans were the Original Native Americans ( " Indians " ). Still enjoyed the Video. Thank you.

@ Vlogging Through History Half the counties in Kentucky are named for people killed at Blue Licks.
Bro you got some cool trips coming up. Have fun.
I have never regarded Washington as a great general. Either in terms of field tactics or strategy. He had good help but without the French would have been in trouble.
What is the resolution of your black background and what is the size of the video window?
My niece lives in Chattanooga so I’ve seen some of those places
Personally, I think the video you're reacting to should go all the way down to just behind your left shoulder. The rest of the screen should be a nature picture, but one that's not distractingly vibrant. Maybe a dark green grassy hill. Sorry I'm a year late making this suggestion.
If I could go to Chattanooga or any other historical site for that matter with this beautiful history man I’d have the time of my life. Would probably be the best day of nerding out to history ever. Want to make that happen one day.
You should have the background look like a war map and and small social media plugs on the bottom
I think you should react to some of the less known Sabaton songs like Wolfpack or Rise of Evil
If you do another armchair historian video, check out his Franco-Prussian war video it got pretty popular
His Crimean War episodes were good.
@@firingallcylinders2949 Nah too Anglo-centered
I love your content. Keep it up please.
Almost 100k subs nice job
17:41 1/3rd is significant support? lol
Are you also History Guy Gaming??? I know your voice from the Ultimate General series. You are definitely History Guy Gaming!
My Favorites from Armchair Historian are the 2 videos on WWII The Western Front!
Winter at Valley Forge may be a bit overhyped as far as bad winters during the Revolution go to be fair, but the first of my ancestors to come to America did end up losing a foot that winter to frostbite.
Oh don’t get me wrong it was bad. Really bad. It just wasn’t the worst winter they faced.
Yes this format is the best
Finally!, really enjoying your vids, but can you react more to armchair historian?
I love the color commentary, very informative. My one suggestion is that you match your audio levels with the video you are critiquing.
You can watch IPNtv: The Unconquered . It is about Poland during WW2 and comunism.
Washington's best decision as a general was ordering his troops not to loot or abuse civilians and strictly enforcing it. That eventually led to public opinion shifting against the British and losing hundreds of little skirmishes to local militias when they decentralized their troops.
Have you ever been to Washington’s HQ in Newburgh? I live like 10 mins away and have never gone.
People do forget that from 1913-1922 about 300,000 to 900,000 Greek civilians where killed by Turkey in the Asia Minor area
JMO, the black background seems to make the video pop out. First time seeing his video seemed pretty good, and your not that old lol
Armchair historian does put out a lot of good content, but as you see, a lot of his information seems be what I like to call “traditional history”
6:34: Washington never wore a wig; he powdered his hair.
Bernardo de Galvez was a Spanish military who helped the American revolutionary, he is one of the few honorary citizens of the USA. Few people know his story.
Maybe a trivia question in the blank space and the first correct answer gets tagged to the top?
im a little envious that you're a lot closer to a lot of historic places and battles sites. i'm in illinois, there aren't many sites like those although there are a few from battles between native americans and colonial americans. sadly they don't get anywhere near the same kind of attention, it's the kind of history america just wants to forget about. for example the end of the so-called "blackhawk war" ended in a river in wisconsin when a steamboat with a cannon on it showed up and gunned down all the men, women and children trying to cross the river and head west. and they simply built a highway over it and forgot about it completely.
If you ever want to understand why people like Patton aren’t included on lists with Alexander, Caesar, or Napoleon:
Napoleon was Patton and Washington. He was a brilliant, charismatic, battlefield commanded AND he was also a good s political leader.
If you’re talking about a subject you can have images or text of the thing ur talking about in the black bars
Bayonet - a device which transforms a musket/rifle to a spear.
Also, Chesapeake Bay, where the French Navy took revenge for their humiliating defeat at Quiberon Bay in the 7 years war.
Do a video on Johnny Horton songs
Are you sure it's not too early to get back to the Napoleonic wars? I thought you said it took 3 weeks before you got the strikes last time.
Voices of the past. Don't know if you've been recommended this channel, but they are insanely interesting to me.
You should meet up with "Geography King" he's in Chattanooga and he knows the area really well and is also interested in the civil war
Live about an hour from chickamauga. Would love to go!
Do you use discord? Trying to organize everything on there if possible. If not that's ok I can email you or something.
armchair historian's videos are pure quality
I suppose that's true.
Thank you.
Great video, bro! Wish you knew ancient history (my degrees will be ANE history and Semitic languages) but you put out great content!!
Can you do turkish indipence war ?
Hey! I love your channel! I think it would be cool if maybe in the background you put your social links or something, I don’t know how I feel about the pure black background. Additionally, did you attend OSU? I frequently see you repping their merch, and my old history professor and mentor attended there as well.
I know I'm bugging you, but the Atlanta History Center is soooo worth it.
