Mamou Mardi Gras

A clip of the Mamou Mardi Gras run, excerpted from a film by JP Bruneau called "Dedans Le Sud De La Louisianne", recorded in the Mamou, La. area circa 1972. I will always be thankful to Mr. Bruneau for his work in recording our music and culture from that era, when few in La knew how special it was. The complete video is here vimeo.com/85036028

Was in it that year (and a few later ones). Great fun and truly a young mans game. It was my first time on a horse and mostly stayed on for another 8 hours of wild galloping and drinking. The next day I knew it too well. A beer is thrown out to the riders as they pass by the beer/boudin truck after each stop of chicken chasing and dancing and after a few dozen stops... you get the picture. Mostly a matter of surviving the wild ride and making it to the dance later that evening. Nothing like it. I hope to do it again one day.
