Q&A - How do I stop an armadillo from tearing up my garden?

  • This damage of plants that have been uprooted but not eaten is typical of armadillos. Armadillos eat insects in the ground. It is probably easiest to trap the armadillo and then take care of it. Armadillos are nocturnal and so they can be hard to see at night. Putting wings on the trap with boards will help funnel the armadillo into the trap. Another option is to build an armadillo exclusion fence. The fence need to be angled out at 40 degrees so the armadillo can’t climb it.

You know, I’ve had lots of success with cayenne pepper around the edge of my freshly planted plants which armadillos were always digging up. They have such good sense of smell it makes sense that pepper would discourage them. It works for squirrels too.

Only solution is like they said, 12 gauge. Ive shot ten in the last three days. Two tonight.

Can't use that solution in city limits, though. SO frustrating.

@@mimiashford5544 Gammo Swarm Hornet 10X, is a break barrel, light weight, easy to carry and cock. Holds 10 22-caliber pellets, 975fps with alloys. Shoot for the head or shoulder shot. The adrenaline dump will send them packing, and then they'll give up the ghost. (Forgot to put in the main reason for my response; This is an air rifle. Hardly any noise, just air release, no bangs. You can check for your area, but usually legal when you're on your property, and are using it to discourage the nuisance/damage to your yard.)

They are making a burrow in the shed under where the water pump is. Just what I need. Pipe damage. Really appreciate the heads up about the bacteria they carry... leprosy. yikes. going to have to go with poultry fencing all around where the shed walls meet the ground and bury some of it probably close to 2 feet down. Nasty little buggers. They always seem to go right where they can cause the most damage.

Helpful, good presentation, someone else called it “funneling” them in with the “wings” etc

Arladillos tore up my yard creating deep holes. I hired someone to set traps, they used marshmellos as bait. I think the racoons grabbed the bate and escaped, never caught the armadillo. Fired the guy! Is there any other way to get rid of them?

they are very hard to catch because they are almost blind. My neighbor caught on with hard boiled eggs. A .22 is the best solution. Hardest part is figuring out when he's coming. I've sat out at dusk, 3 AM, 6 AM and have got a few over the years.

@@mlfitness67 They dig under barn foundations and can make one collapse. You can have 2x4 in "V" pattern where at the point you put a cat trap and capture the animal. They have bad eyesight. They are getting invasive around here in SC and sometimes you have to be "extreme".

You need to get rid of them if you want to stop the damage. Here is a video about building a trap: th-cam.com/video/YQ8_11rzfOQ/w-d-xo.html
