Honestly makes me so happy. Mangini is a technician and phenomenal in his own right, but Portnoy is an animal apart and brings the best out of Petrucci and Rudess.
@@Smac2321 I find Mangini's playing so sterile and boring. Part of that is how they have been mixing his parts since he joined the band but it's also down to his playing style. Portnoy has a sort of swagger about him. Mangini is just a drum machine that plays perfectly. Boring to listen to imo.

Jordan Rudess is probably the most amazing keyboard player that I've ever heard. Typically keyboard parts in most rock bands tend to sound ambient or kind of layered as background sugar. Rudess plays his board like a guitar player - ripping it up!!!
Checkout the band called Adagio, especially the album Underworld. There are some songs(like Chosen) that have the most insane keyboard shredding I ever heard

With a background as a composer, one little candidate that you probably would have never come across yourself that should give you quite a bit to bite into is "DIMMU BORGIR - Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse (LIVE - FORCES OF THE NORTHERN NIGHT)"
Liquid Tension Experiment are really great. The musicianship is undeniable. I agree with some of the commenters that the new track sounds rather predictable and unadventurous - especially if you have heard their stuff or Dream Theater stuff before. It's still a very solid song, of course, and it serves as a nice welcoming fanfare for the 3rd coming of the band. But I hope they take more compositional risks with some of the other tracks on the album.
On the InsideOut website (their label), they said that this was the first track they did. They offered less description for this one, but as for the other tracks, it seems like we are getting everything from jazz to speed metal to jam material and everything!!! Cannot wait!
Another great guy is 'Critical Reactions'. Otherwise most reactors suck ass. Especially the ones boasting as "drum teachers" with zero contribution to the song and rhythm ideas.
Another favorite of mine is finowa. He basically dissects Tool songs first listen and tends to hate them, but always funny and with a lot of musical knowledge.
I like to call them the all star team because every position is filled someone is one of if the best at their instrument. This band is really amazing to listen to.

You know what's even crazier? They wrote the entire album in just a few weeks, mostly by jamming together and then just quickly recording what they liked. The musicianship is just top notch!
I know LTE from their first works (1998, 1999) and this new song is AMAZING!!! the first melodic section when keyboards come in gave me goosebumps since first listening. Mike Portnoy (drummer) is a rock machine, and in parallel to this work he also worked with Transatlantic, another super group with Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings), Pete Trevawas (Marillion) and Neal Morse (ex Spock's Beard). Anyway these musician, in my opinion, are the best in the musical scene at the moment... Tony Levin between them, absolutely not the last one among bass players
Whats awesome is that we've been waiting for a 3rd LTE album for years and this is the first track released off the new album, so a lot of us who are already LTE fans get to hear this one for the first time with you. On a side note, if you want to react to more LTE, just go ahead and react to some of their live videos. The performances and sound quality is on par with the studio versions and its fun to watch them actually play.
100% agree with your comment on the keyboard solo, I couldn’t believe my ears, and it was my absolute favorite part of the song! I think all the musicians are at their best in this particular project (LTE), and this album is likely going to be my album of the year, maybe even the decade. Your reaction to their solos reminds me of when I first heard Dream Theater! 😂 I'm excited for you, because there are so many amazing tracks from both DT and LTE that you've yet to hear, and you'll be making that face many more times when you do! I'd personally like to recommend the song Iconoclast by Symphony X, it's the title track and intro to their 2011 record and it's a killer track! Progressive neoclassical metal, some of their stuff is a bit hit or miss in my opinion but that track is a real gem!
Do some Ayreon! The guy composes high sci-fi epic concept albums and each character is voiced by amazing vocal guests, some of which I believe you've heard on your journey so far.
Caligula's horse was a band I kept a tab on for so long and finally started to listen to them towards the beginning of the pandemic and I have to say they are exactly up my alley. Strong Haken and leprous vibes with them. Anything off rise radiant would be killer

I was just about to recommend this one to you - and saw your reaction! Jordan Rudess (keyboards) and John Petrucci (guitar) are currently in Dream Theater. Mike Portnoy is formerly of Dream Theater, and now plays in several bands (Neal Morse Band, the Winery Dogs, Transatlantic, and Sons of Apollo are a few of the more well-known). Tony Levin has never been in Dream Theater, but has been in King Crimson since 1981, has been Peter Gabriel's go-to bassist since 1977, has his own band called Stick Men, and roughly 500 session credits. The music video image is frozen for me, so I can't tell if you are seeing Tony Levin's fingers through the song - but it is amazing watching him play those blazing riffs *fingerstyle* ... and with dead-on precision and consistency! And then, just to make it even crazier, right around the 3:30 mark, he switches from the MusicMan 5-string to his Chapman Stick & goes nuts for a couple of minutes before switching *back* to the 5-string at 5:49! BTW - I've kept my hair short for decades - I'm former Navy, so got in the habit way back - but about 2 months into COVID lockdowns, hated the shaggies, so shaved it all off, and liked it. Welcome to the fresh aire club! :-P

Agree. MP brought that special sauce /spark. MM is amazing but MP was one of the original 3 core members (Portnoy / Petrucci / Myung). So happy they reunited for this AND for Petruccis newest solo CD.

I'd love a break down of Close to the Edge by Yes. It's long but it's one of those songs I could listen to a thousand times and never get bored of. All the different moving pieces and motifs coming together to create a beautiful piece of music. The a part in the middle where everything calms down before cathedral-esque organ comes in and it always sends shivers down my spine at how hauntingly beautiful it is.

i had an old golf game for pc and you could set sounds for achievements. i set the intro to paradigm shift for hitting a hole-in-one. unfortunately i never got one myself, but my college roommate did, and it scared the shit out of him!

Tony Levin's chapman stick playing is so friggin' fantastic! Adds so many tasty nuggets throughout the track (apparently he played a standard electric bass and chapman stick on this one). . .
This is great soloing. But still my favourite JP solo (and probably a good song to do a video on) is the one from voices from the Awake album... It's magic. And the song is great. As is that album, probably my favourite dream theatre.
There's so much to unpack in this one short song. They've managed to hit old LTE references and old Dream Theater references in this one track, multiple times. This was amazing. I can't wait for the album and HOPEFULLY a tour.
You have to check out more of them. Acid Rain is their most popular piece (and it deserves it), but I would recommend the live (in LA 2008) performance to really see them go wild with it. When the Water Breaks and Universal Mind are also great. Hope you do more!
Great to hear this song for the first time ever and doing it together with You! The opening part wasn't that impressive, but what followed floored me totally.
It would be easy to suggest that any of the musicians carried the song because each of them actually carried the song at different points in the song. That being said, Mike Portnoy is truly the driver of LTE. His drumming is incomparable, and his timing is mind blowing.
Been waiting so long for this and Definitely not disappointed, but I’ll just say that I hope the rest of the album has more of the experimental LTE side. After all, that’s a big part of LTE!
He is one of the most tallented musicians ever his compositions are amazinz to say the least and he has an extremely extensive knowledge of music and music theory he taught a class at Berkley college of Music. I first hear of him a few years ago from Steve Vai he said Jacob is one of the most talented people he has ever seen perform live.

That was some else, damn that's impressive. So complex. I suggest looking at: Unexpect - The Quantum Symphony, Diablo Swing Orchestra - Vodoo Mon Amour, Between the Buried and Me - Extremophile Elite, and Beyond Creation - Omnipresent Perception. It would awesome if at some point you managed to do some of them, particularly Unexpect and Diablo Swing Orchestra. They are small band that are not often reacted to or analysed and I think you'd be a great person to react to those. Unexpect were an independent band and were from my home town, so they have a particular place in my heart, and DSO are just so much fun. Keep at it, you have great takes on music and I really appreciate your take on music.

I can't help but I automatically compare it to recent DT stuff and in terms of composition this song is so much better than anything they released in the last 5 years. Maybe not on the old LTE level but it makes me interested in the rest of the album. If you keep in mind that this was the first song they wrote I'm sure that it was in kind of a comfort zone for all if you can name it so on this level. I think the real stuff is still to come :)
John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy formed Majesty ( to become Dream Theater later) back in the 80's during their days at Berklee College of Music in Boston. They have phenomenal chemistry from so many years of playing together. Jordan Rudess joined DT after the first LTE album in 1997. His skills from professional training at Juliard in NYC are untouchable. Tony Levin brings in years of experience playing Bass Guitar and is just the icing on the cake. These guys have unbelievable chemistry together and have recorded 2 and now 3 of the best Prog Rock/Prog Metal albums in history. Thanks for the reaction and review!

If you're into keyboard solos so much then check out Jordan's performance in "Kindred Spirits" by LTE. Maybe is less complex but in my opinion it is his most emotional solo of all. My personal best as well. It gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. The song itself is one of my LTEs favorites too.

Hey Geebz - (not that) Gary Wright here again. Funny story - I'm in the eastern US and I work from home, so when I got down to my office about 7:30 this morning, this video was staring at me from my Facebook feed. Listened to it immediately (speakers and a sub-woofer, not headphones at 7:30 AM) and reacted pretty much the same way you did. I made a mental note to go back and listen again this evening, and it turns out that second listening was this one with you. Like most, I'm aware of all these musicians. Started listening to King Crimson when I was in high school in '74 (although Tony didn't come along till '81). First heard Dream Theater around 2000, probably. Actually this is just available for pre-order right now, it won't be out till 3/26. But there are the other two albums (CD's, whatever) out as well as a live effort. Back at the beginning of the pandemic, Jordan was streaming live on Facebook from his house every day at 4:30 PM Eastern time. (He's since moved this over to Patreon.) All that time I was making it a point to wrap up my work in time to be able to sit back and enjoy Jordan just improv and ramble on his grand piano for like 45 to 90 minutes every day. He is an amazing talent.
I have also suggested "Divine Moments of Truth" just because it's in odd times and it's polyrhythmic at times. Any Shpongle would be interesting to hear his take.

They're about as prog as prog gets, and that song shows it off really well.

Then I really liked a thing you said about the musicians being accomplished seniors and yet delivering a very compelling, fresh 2021 sounding composition. I had the same thought exactly when i first listened to this track, one tends to think at some point musicians reach a point where they said all they needed to say, but hose guys, wow. Super hyped about the album, can't wait :)
Saved listening to this for this reaction video. Great to experience new music in this way. First part made me think of some late seventies / early eighties prog. Can't really pinpoint which band or bands though. Love the 'meandering' around the core riffs building up towards the middle, more melodic, part. Awesome skills across the whole range. Also loved the last part with the amplifying riffs leading to the blasting finale. I would love to hear what unique lyricists/vocalists(vocal instrumentalists!) could add to such a track (in those rare passages where they could actually add something lol), like Maynard YK, Mikael A or Anneke vG. Tbh such 100% instrumental tracks at this intensity rate aren't really my cup of tea, despite their epicness, which in this case is a totally justified qualification indeed. I prefer them a bit slower/lighter, with some accompanying vocal instrumentation to complete the musical painting / work of art. Hmm ... turning a guitar into a coffee table may actually be a good idea. *gazes at guitar catching dust in the corner of the room and the piano that incidentally serves as a coffee table while still in use*

The core of the project is Jim Matheos (guitarist and songwriter for OG prog metal pioneers Fates Warning) and Kevin Moore (original Dream Theater keys). The song features Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth on vocals and Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree on drums.
Love the video! (and the haircut) You might like reacting to some stuff by System of a down, their songs aren't very technical or atmospheric (they do play with time signatures from time to time, but nothing really prog-ish) but their songs are very fun to listen to. Some songs I'd recommend for you are Chop suey!, Radio/Video, B.Y.O.B, and Question! There are probably many more great songs I forgot but I think you'd like these. Also, I love your content, I think it's very interesting to see your take on these types of music.

Someone else also commented, this music has vibes like a backing track used in a lot of video games. I can't put my finger on which, but I definitely love it. Very dynamic, great use of piano to a rhythmic piece. I want to plug Magdalena by A Perfect Circle, a real rock-song. Pretty lightweight, 4 minutes long. Great, atmospheric "ancient" feel, and it's about comparing a stripper refered to as "Magdalena" to Mary Magdalene from the bible, who is often speculated to be a prostitute, which if true would be a mark of shame, yet the song is definitely about lust.

It's still a very solid song, of course, and it serves as a nice welcoming fanfare for the 3rd coming of the band. But I hope they take more compositional risks with some of the other tracks on the album.
On the InsideOut website (their label), they said that this was the first track they did. They offered less description for this one, but as for the other tracks, it seems like we are getting everything from jazz to speed metal to jam material and everything!!! Cannot wait!

Another great guy is 'Critical Reactions'. Otherwise most reactors suck ass. Especially the ones boasting as "drum teachers" with zero contribution to the song and rhythm ideas.
Another favorite of mine is finowa. He basically dissects Tool songs first listen and tends to hate them, but always funny and with a lot of musical knowledge.
I like to call them the all star team because every position is filled someone is one of if the best at their instrument. This band is really amazing to listen to.

You know what's even crazier? They wrote the entire album in just a few weeks, mostly by jamming together and then just quickly recording what they liked. The musicianship is just top notch!

I know LTE from their first works (1998, 1999) and this new song is AMAZING!!! the first melodic section when keyboards come in gave me goosebumps since first listening. Mike Portnoy (drummer) is a rock machine, and in parallel to this work he also worked with Transatlantic, another super group with Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings), Pete Trevawas (Marillion) and Neal Morse (ex Spock's Beard). Anyway these musician, in my opinion, are the best in the musical scene at the moment... Tony Levin between them, absolutely not the last one among bass players
Whats awesome is that we've been waiting for a 3rd LTE album for years and this is the first track released off the new album, so a lot of us who are already LTE fans get to hear this one for the first time with you.
On a side note, if you want to react to more LTE, just go ahead and react to some of their live videos. The performances and sound quality is on par with the studio versions and its fun to watch them actually play.
100% agree with your comment on the keyboard solo, I couldn’t believe my ears, and it was my absolute favorite part of the song! I think all the musicians are at their best in this particular project (LTE), and this album is likely going to be my album of the year, maybe even the decade. I'd personally like to recommend the song Iconoclast by Symphony X, it's the title track and intro to their 2011 record and it's a killer track! Progressive neoclassical metal, some of their stuff is a bit hit or miss in my opinion but that track is a real gem!
Do some Ayreon! The guy composes high sci-fi epic concept albums and each character is voiced by amazing vocal guests, some of which I believe you've heard on your journey so far.

Jordan Rudess (keyboards) and John Petrucci (guitar) are currently in Dream Theater. Mike Portnoy is formerly of Dream Theater, and now plays in several bands (Neal Morse Band, the Winery Dogs, Transatlantic, and Sons of Apollo are a few of the more well-known). Tony Levin has never been in Dream Theater, but has been in King Crimson since 1981, has been Peter Gabriel's go-to bassist since 1977, has his own band called Stick Men, and roughly 500 session credits.
The music video image is frozen for me, so I can't tell if you are seeing Tony Levin's fingers through the song - but it is amazing watching him play those blazing riffs *fingerstyle* ... and with dead-on precision and consistency! And then, just to make it even crazier, right around the 3:30 mark, he switches from the MusicMan 5-string to his Chapman Stick & goes nuts for a couple of minutes before switching *back* to the 5-string at 5:49!
BTW - I've kept my hair short for decades - I'm former Navy, so got in the habit way back - but about 2 months into COVID lockdowns, hated the shaggies, so shaved it all off, and liked it. Welcome to the fresh aire club! :-P

Rudess is DT's 3rd keyboardist. The band was around for almost 15 years before he joined.
Agree. MP brought that special sauce /spark. MM is amazing but MP was one of the original 3 core members (Portnoy / Petrucci / Myung). So happy they reunited for this AND for Petruccis newest solo CD.

Last year I discovered Wilderun, especially their latest album Veil of Imagination. I would be ecstatic for you to check it out, the level of commitment and passion that was clearly put into the album is stunning. "O Resolution!" was my top song on Spotify last year, it is an amazing ride.

I'd love a break down of Close to the Edge by Yes. It's long but it's one of those songs I could listen to a thousand times and never get bored of. All the different moving pieces and motifs coming together to create a beautiful piece of music. The a part in the middle where everything calms down before cathedral-esque organ comes in and it always sends shivers down my spine at how hauntingly beautiful it is.

i had an old golf game for pc and you could set sounds for achievements. i set the intro to paradigm shift for hitting a hole-in-one. unfortunately i never got one myself, but my college roommate did, and it scared the shit out of him!

Tony Levin's chapman stick playing is so friggin' fantastic! Adds so many tasty nuggets throughout the track (apparently he played a standard electric bass and chapman stick on this one). . .
This is great soloing. But still my favourite JP solo (and probably a good song to do a video on) is the one from voices from the Awake album... It's magic. And the song is great. As is that album, probably my favourite dream theatre.
There's so much to unpack in this one short song. They've managed to hit old LTE references and old Dream Theater references in this one track, multiple times.
This was amazing. I can't wait for the album and HOPEFULLY a tour.
You have to check out more of them. Acid Rain is their most popular piece (and it deserves it), but I would recommend the live (in LA 2008) performance to really see them go wild with it. When the Water Breaks and Universal Mind are also great. Hope you do more!

It would be easy to suggest that any of the musicians carried the song because each of them actually carried the song at different points in the song.
That being said, Mike Portnoy is truly the driver of LTE. His drumming is incomparable, and his timing is mind blowing.
Been waiting so long for this and Definitely not disappointed, but I’ll just say that I hope the rest of the album has more of the experimental LTE side. After all, that’s a big part of LTE!

He is one of the most tallented musicians ever his compositions are amazinz to say the least and he has an extremely extensive knowledge of music and music theory he taught a class at Berkley college of Music. I first hear of him a few years ago from Steve Vai he said Jacob is one of the most talented people he has ever seen perform live.

That was some else, damn that's impressive. So complex. I suggest looking at: Unexpect - The Quantum Symphony, Diablo Swing Orchestra - Vodoo Mon Amour, Between the Buried and Me - Extremophile Elite, and Beyond Creation - Omnipresent Perception. It would awesome if at some point you managed to do some of them, particularly Unexpect and Diablo Swing Orchestra. They are small band that are not often reacted to or analysed and I think you'd be a great person to react to those. Unexpect were an independent band and were from my home town, so they have a particular place in my heart, and DSO are just so much fun. Keep at it, you have great takes on music and I really appreciate your take on music.

I can't help but I automatically compare it to recent DT stuff and in terms of composition this song is so much better than anything they released in the last 5 years. Maybe not on the old LTE level but it makes me interested in the rest of the album. If you keep in mind that this was the first song they wrote I'm sure that it was in kind of a comfort zone for all if you can name it so on this level. I think the real stuff is still to come :)
On first listen I like the older work better. This song does gets better towards the end.

John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy formed Majesty ( to become Dream Theater later) back in the 80's during their days at Berklee College of Music in Boston. They have phenomenal chemistry from so many years of playing together. Jordan Rudess joined DT after the first LTE album in 1997. His skills from professional training at Juliard in NYC are untouchable. Tony Levin brings in years of experience playing Bass Guitar and is just the icing on the cake. These guys have unbelievable chemistry together and have recorded 2 and now 3 of the best Prog Rock/Prog Metal albums in history. Thanks for the reaction and review!

If you're into keyboard solos so much then check out Jordan's performance in "Kindred Spirits" by LTE. Maybe is less complex but in my opinion it is his most emotional solo of all. My personal best as well. It gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. The song itself is one of my LTEs favorites too.

I think you'd appreciate Jem's keyboard-centric compositional style. Funny story - I'm in the eastern US and I work from home, so when I got down to my office about 7:30 this morning, this video was staring at me from my Facebook feed. Listened to it immediately (speakers and a sub-woofer, not headphones at 7:30 AM) and reacted pretty much the same way you did. I made a mental note to go back and listen again this evening, and it turns out that second listening was this one with you.
Like most, I'm aware of all these musicians. Started listening to King Crimson when I was in high school in '74 (although Tony didn't come along till '81). First heard Dream Theater around 2000, probably.
Actually this is just available for pre-order right now, it won't be out till 3/26. But there are the other two albums (CD's, whatever) out as well as a live effort.
Back at the beginning of the pandemic, Jordan was streaming live on Facebook from his house every day at 4:30 PM Eastern time. (He's since moved this over to Patreon.) All that time I was making it a point to wrap up my work in time to be able to sit back and enjoy Jordan just improv and ramble on his grand piano for like 45 to 90 minutes every day. He is an amazing talent.

Then I really liked a thing you said about the musicians being accomplished seniors and yet delivering a very compelling, fresh 2021 sounding composition. I had the same thought exactly when i first listened to this track, one tends to think at some point musicians reach a point where they said all they needed to say, but hose guys, wow. Super hyped about the album, can't wait :)
Saved listening to this for this reaction video. Great to experience new music in this way. First part made me think of some late seventies / early eighties prog. Can't really pinpoint which band or bands though. Love the 'meandering' around the core riffs building up towards the middle, more melodic, part. Awesome skills across the whole range. Also loved the last part with the amplifying riffs leading to the blasting finale.
I would love to hear what unique lyricists/vocalists(vocal instrumentalists!) could add to such a track (in those rare passages where they could actually add something lol), like Maynard YK, Mikael A or Anneke vG. Tbh such 100% instrumental tracks at this intensity rate aren't really my cup of tea, despite their epicness, which in this case is a totally justified qualification indeed. I prefer them a bit slower/lighter, with some accompanying vocal instrumentation to complete the musical painting / work of art.
Hmm ... turning a guitar into a coffee table may actually be a good idea.

You might like reacting to some stuff by System of a down, their songs aren't very technical or atmospheric (they do play with time signatures from time to time, but nothing really prog-ish) but their songs are very fun to listen to. Some songs I'd recommend for you are Chop suey!, Radio/Video, B.Y.O.B, and Question! There are probably many more great songs I forgot but I think you'd like these.
Also, I love your content, I think it's very interesting to see your take on these types of music.

I wanted to humbly recommend the band Therion, and maybe their track “Voyage of Gurdjieff”, since I think it really captures the spirit of what I’ve heard you call “the metal or rock opera”. Someone else also commented, this music has vibes like a backing track used in a lot of video games. I can't put my finger on which, but I definitely love it. Very dynamic, great use of piano to a rhythmic piece.
I want to plug Magdalena by A Perfect Circle, a real rock-song. Pretty lightweight, 4 minutes long. Great, atmospheric "ancient" feel, and it's about comparing a stripper refered to as "Magdalena" to Mary Magdalene from the bible, who is often speculated to be a prostitute, which if true would be a mark of shame, yet the song is definitely about lust.
I can see that, I get a lot of old school RPG vibes from the drums/keyboard in many places, and the solos have a very Boss Battle feel.
I highly recommend checking out “In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion” by Agalloch.
