$41 Weekly Grocery Spend, Container Planter Garden Tour

  • This week I spent $41 on groceries. I also redeemed 2 manufacturer's coupons and some Scene Points. This is our first full summer in the tiny house. We are figuring out what that means for us garden wise. Our property is mostly rock (granite & shale). We normally grow all our veggies from seed but decided that this first year, we would purchase seedlings. I show a tour of what we have so far and some of these ideas would work well for patio and/or balcony gardening. Check out what we have come up with so far.

      We had a few containers at the old house. Mostly specialty peppers and tomatoes. I had the ladder planter and used it for spinach, which I've never had success with. Sigh. And also some herbs, also not successful. Lots of changes for us. I am always hopeful. This year we had to buy soil. I used cheap soil in the bottom half of the grow bags. Then a mix of high quality all purpose soil and vegetable/herb soil in the tops half. All the small containers just have the good stuff. We will figure out, or try to, composting to maintain soil jn years to come.

      @@adventuresingroceryland marigolds, basil and peppers. The slugs are off the charts this year. Oh and we also had hail that ripped through my seedlings, too. It’s been a crazy year. But, if you don’t get your seedlings in the ground, there is pretty much not enough time for a harvest.

    Melanie, I guess I missed something, you moved? I wish you and hubby all the best! Gardening in a new place is just like starting all over again. Have fun. Check out square foot gardening, and check out One Yard Revolution. He is in a cold weather area, and was EXTREMELY helpful to me with my gardening on a smaller, but intense scale. He doesn't do videos anymore, but well worth the information he shares. Also check out gutter gardens for such things as lettuce in the spring and fall, or in the shade, works very well. For buckets, check with the floral department at the grocery store. As for their floral buckets, they throw them away here. Just drill holes in them. Great for growing things. I have been wanting to get the walking onions for a while, you will love them. Can't wait for the updates on your garden. Keep a journal, it's very helpful. Enjoy the week. Catherine

      We sold our house last year, renovated and moved to the lake (which was previously just a seasonal location). It was a lot of work. We are now in a tiny home with no closets. So we had to plan everything so carefully. We had the lake place for almost 20 year. The flower gardens were mature, but I lost pretty much everything when the excavators were in last spring. It felt pretty depressing. So this spring, my mission has been to rebuild them and figure out vegetable gardening. I've had some lovely friends split and share some plants with me but I ended up purchasing at least half the ornamental gardens. Cough cough. I am considering that "renovation expenses". Lol.
      As for the veggies, I'll check out your suggestion. I am actually getting food grade 5 gallon buckets from a local factory. I know someone who is able to get some for me and I am very grateful and excited about that. Fingers crossed.

    Hi, great to see the doggos get some treats. On the mayo - price matching is a store coupon and the coupon is a manufacturer coupon. Not double dipping as the store gets back the money from the coupon.

    • @adventuresingroceryland
      @adventuresingroceryland  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, agreed. I had the same conversation with the handsome one as we were walking to the vehicle. I was vexed but honestly not surprised. Price matching at Giant Tiger is not easy. I feel they have the policy to look good to consumers but make it extremely difficult to discourage consumers from actively attempting to price match. 100% they would get the money back from the manufacturer's coupon.

      It's kind of silly. They get reimbursed for manufacturers coupons. They would be out of pocket for the price match. I think to discourage the price match, they disallow the coupon on price matches. Just my opinion

    Love the craftiness of your new garden! Great thinking outside of the box on how to make it work. I’m curious if you have issues with deer and bear or other critters attacking your garden? I live in bear country if northern New Jersey and it’s hard, in an apartment, to keep a garden because of the wildlife activity.

    Interesting. When I was in Sydney a couple weeks ago, I tried to price match Maxwell House instant coffee at No Frills, which is in the same parking lot as a Giant Tiger.
    They declined to do it. Thankfully, there were still some in stock at Giant Tiger.
    Because some time before that, I went to get pasta that was on sale at Giant Tiger, but it was sold out.
    On the other hand, pasta is more of a staple, so I guess that's why.

      The only local store to me that price matches is Giant Tiger. I rarely attempt it. There always seems to be some type of exclusion, I end up embarrassed. Mostly not worth it.

    Don't the stores get the value of the coupon back from the manufacturer??? Why do they care if its on sale or price matched??? I don't have a car so my grocery trips are quite limited to using those who will deliver to me. Though I recently expanded to using WallyWorld after some less than great experiences at Save On Foods. I have found a way to get the best of both worlds and carefully plan my deliveries from both stores. What I pay in delivery fees pales in comparison to what I would have to spend to get my groceries home in a taxi. And they bring my groceries right to my apartment door! I am prohibited by the SPCP (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Plants) from ever having plants or a garden again. I killed multiple cacti from underwatering them. You read that right. Under watering. It takes special skills to accomplish that. I don't enjoy plants or gardens anyway (sorry Mum).

    • @adventuresingroceryland
      @adventuresingroceryland  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hahahaha. I have relatives that belong to that plant society. You aren't alone!
      Yes, they get their money back. I believe it is to discourage people from price matching, which they wouldn't get their money back for.
      When you don't have a vehicle, it's just smart to price compare taxi's to delivery fee! Very smart.
