Sharpest Railroad Curve Ever On Main Line & Dangerous Place To Railfan, CSX Enters Queensgate Yard

  • Dangerous area to Railfan and sharpest curve ever on a mainline railroad line. Train knocks down the signal while entering the huge railroad yard in Cincinnati known as Queensgate Yard. First a local switching train goes by with a remote control locomotive that is used for switching customers on the west side of Cincinnati. I saw this remote control locomotive in action just before I filmed it but I couldn't find anywhere to park. This train use to have a caboose for long reverse moves but they have abandoned the caboose idea. Next train was a HUGE CSX auto racks train. It slowly approached the curve, knocked down the signal ( Yellow goes to Red ), crossed the bridge and went through the flood wall to enter the huge yard. It took about 18 minutes for this train to pass me and while it was going by you can see 2 other trains moving in the distance on the Norfolk Southern line and another CSX line. There was also a Central Railroad Of Indiana CIND train waiting to enter the yard but I left after the CSX auto racks train passed me. This area is not good for rail fanning. Some of the people who walk through here just look a little shady and they never smile. The road to get back here is listed as a city road but it has huge pot holes full of water and trash is everywhere including some old mattresses with some weird stains. When I was there filming there were 2 police cars parked just a short way down from me next to one of the flood walls. I had a friend with me but he didn't get out of the truck. I have another video that I made here a couple years ago showing the old B&O dwarf signal in use that use to sit next to the bridge on the sharp curve. Filmed December 16, 2021. Thanks for watching! In the UK we would call a curve that sharp a "train-set curve", because it resembles the curves you get in train sets.

    Some comments about graffiti. The culture easily costs the public untold millions of dollars. Consider that most of the paint you see has been shoplifted or stolen in other ways because this genre of "artists" are not purchasing the materials. Also consider that the railroads must reapply any official numbering and coding where the graffiti has covered them up. Consider in the case of the auto racks that paint overspray has damaged many new vehicle finishes that must be corrected when the vehicle reaches the destination.

      A point I have used to folks that think its " cool", is ask them if they would feel the same way about it if someone painted the side of their home or vehicle. Yeah, not so much. Same deal, RR cars are someone's property as well.

    • @paulbergen9114
      @paulbergen9114 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sadly auto racks need those small holes to provide light for the folks who loaded and secure the cars. After a car is boogered up they're left that way because they won't paint over someone's art or cant incorporate the old drawing and that's from 2 folks @ TTX

    • @larrywalker7759

It was the beginning of the old B&O from Baltimore to Ellicott City, Maryland (about 10 miles). Since the first train ran in the 1800's it was extended to Brunswick, MD and west. Just west of the Tehachapi Loop and downhill is an extended length of a tight curve. I had a field project nearby with an elevated view of the curve. All wheel flanges were screaming the entire time they were in the curve. Uphill with 3 units leading and variable pushers in the mix, the trains aren't speeding. Scenic mountain setting, with several tunnels visible from highway CA-58, but the loop isn't. Some memorable wrecks along this stretch, back to steamer days. My Dad had a great book on this section.

      6 horseshoe curves and a loop, 12-14 degree curves everywhere, and all of it on mountain grade, between 2.2 and 2.9%. Tehachapi is a terrible grind, home to over a dozen string line derailments a year while still being one of the busiest stretches of single-track mainline in the country.

    Thank you for documenting these trains, Jaw Tooth! That was neat to see the three trains at once. That auto rack train was a HUGE. I noticed that the auto rack train was initially struggling as it came up the hill to come to that sharp curve. After a while I moticed that the auto rack train was moving faster as the engines got it moving. Those flood walls are something to see. I presume that the wall plugs that go into the flood walls where the train tracks go through the flood wall are close to the openings so that they can be put in place when they are needed. Thank you for uploading this video!

    • @mshum538
      @mshum538 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tom, their was no struggle at all, with those “ high capacity “ engines, the operating protocol requires being able to stop within one half the range of vision plus the signal inside of the curve was out of vision ( sight) that you have to prepare to stop for and in this case the signal displayed an aspect allowing it to proceed without stopping….ms

    • @thomasmackowiak
      @thomasmackowiak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mshum538 thank you for the insight on why the engineer was proceeding so slowly as he came up the hill and around the curve. Thomas, I think the Public Works department for the City of Cincinnati has a place or places that they store those flood wall sections. I've watched them close up the wall down on Mehring Way, which is a road down below the city along the river. They bring in the pieces there on a truck and put them in place with a boom on another truck. They seem to work pretty fast when floods threaten the city. You know it's going to be a bad one when they seal off those walls, it disrupts so many things when they do put them up, but then again, the river does that when it goes to major flood stage.

    I grew up near Morpeth, in Northumberland, England. It has the tightest curve (17 chains or 340 metres radius) of any main railway line in the United Kingdom. Several serious/fatal accidents have happened there on northbound trains. Indeed, the UK rail system now features "Morpeth Boards" which are like AWS signals but for upcoming speed restrictions (because of curves, or whatever).

    Watching that local.leave I think that's the first time I've seen them yellow strobe lights on. Tight as that curve was no big screeching. That horseshoe style curve makes me think of the SP @ Colton. There must be enough grease from that flange lubricator on the outbounds to keep these long racks quiet. Good train handling with no sudden stops or acceleration lest one leave a heap 'o cars laying on their sides. As for CIND in the distance take a number and wait your turn. Appreciate the behind the scenes tour to Cincy

      A google search shows #6522 to be a GP-40. But the cab has been rebuilt for some reason, much more square than originally built. I wonder if there was anyone on board?

    You should ask railroad companies to do ride alongs to film their actual operations. That would be super!

    Great good video, mr Jaw Tooth.
    That CSX train with boxcars for automobiles that was a long one. I guess two trains in one therefor a DPU. But man what a busy railyard overthere tree trains into the yard and one waiting.

      Not "boxcars", "Auto-Racks". A boxcar can/will carry anything fit to put into it, where "only" vehicles are carried in the long train cars. Note the auto-racks only have end doors, on both ends so the vehicles can be driven from one end of the cut of cars being loaded/unloaded to the other end.
      Perhaps this video will help you fully understand the unloading. th-cam.com/video/EKk4MTJ2koE/w-d-xo.html
      And this one, the "loading". Enjoy the "drive". th-cam.com/video/oqc6GSMhljo/w-d-xo.html

    Jawtooth,
    Have ever considered giving tours with rail fans? There is a guy who does it with baseball games and charges $1,000 per game. It would be great for those of us rail fans who don’t know the area or that much about real life trains. AKA how many times do have to explain what a DPU is? LOL!
    You could call your tours “A day with Jawtooth.”

    That was really fantastic, Jaw Tooth! Never thought that a major transcontinental railroad would have such tight curves! There seem to be quite a few of them leading up to the entrance on that side of the yard. I hope it's not too difficult to get some more videos in that location, if it's not too dangerous. Really appreciate this.

      there is one in New York on a video from a while back that is tighter then this that leads into an industry. Only 4 axel GP's are allowed to do the switching of it, since it also goes into the building itself. I forget who posted it but its a crazy tight curve.
