By that logic, no social media should be for anyone. All of these other sites do this as well, maybe with the exception of like twitter and facebook, but they have their own bad features and scenarios that they put you in. If you think tiktok for "toxic culture" shouldn't be for anyone, go ahead and rule out all social medias as well

One possibility is that they are giving at least some of this data to the chinese government, which wouldn't be good to say the least. There are also a few other issues with data collection like that, like security breaches. But that's the other main reason that I don't like tik tok. Young kids aren’t able to recognize those boundaries as clearly; heck most adults barely can. Social media isn’t inherently bad but it is powerful and requires lots of self regulation to use safely.

The thing is that the same problems that apply to social media (and not only social media!) for children also apply to a lesser extend to adults. This spiral of negativity is toxic for everyone, the only difference is that most children and some adults just get drowned in it, and suffocate.
The biggest problems with social media are in my opinion the algorithmic "most relevant" presentation of posts, and the toxic chasing of fake clout.
The former is the reason why I prefer chat groups, and sites that sort by "newest first". You don't only see the "good" but also the "lost average". This can be really motivating to someone like me, who used to think he sucked, but now knows he is just part of the regular 95% of people.
The latter is just a social problem that get amplified in these echochambers. Years of Hollywood stars have trained us to strive a life of fake clout, instead of focusing on the interactions that really matter. Friends get collected like trading cards, and the winner is the one who is present in the most decks. This behaviour creates ever-hungry clout-addicts, who focus their life on creating even more effective "like"-traps, making others envious and hence the cycle repeats.
The real problem is not the social media, it is how you use it. There is nothing wrong with a grandma in a knitting-group like there is nothing wrong with a child in a lego group. But it only takes one toxic clout-hungry individual to get them all going "share"-hungry, and this is especially apparent with children. If these "clout"-hungry kids just get ignored (which happens quite a lot in some of the better-minded chat groups I'm part in), then you can really start to see how beneficial the internet can become, once a group of individuals get together to solve a problem.
Of course, the whole irony is that I'm writing this on a "I'm first"-hungry platform, where I already know that nobody will read my comment and it will get sorted to the bottom... 🤔

@RedKnightC one hundred percent agree. In the USA where I am from I feel like they need to redo the entire system I’m not sure about other places. There should be basics on how to live in the world then students should be encouraged to pick higher English or biology or what ever as a secondary thing instead of forcing unnecessary subjects that students would not engage with and still not have the things that would really help a child learn how to be in the world after high school

    • @IridescentTwilight

Hmm. That's interesting actually. Since you can't really prevent kids from staying off of the internet at such a young age even when they're not supposed to be on the internet, it's probably best you normalize that option so it's not taboo to be on the internet at such a young age, but educate the accounts that are below that certain age limit to let them know the dangers of being on it in the first place. That's certainly one way of tackling the problem.

@@lordfawful2329 My idea was theoretical more than anything. Theoretically speaking, if we get rid of how taboo it is (might be poor word choice here, but I don't really have a better word for it for now) to have kids lie about their age when they sign up for websites and services, they'd be more comfortable signing up with their real age. And if their real age ends up being below a certain threshold (to be determined) where they're more susceptible to being influenced, certain websites and services can at least give them warnings about potential threats and let them know that they're at risk of being manipulated and help them understand that. It allows young kids to be educated and have awareness over the topic, at the very least.
The idea is very theoretical, since it's nearly impossible to get here without violating certain rules set in place in today's standards, but I like to explore tangential ideas :) Getting a discussion going about it is essential.

@@IridescentTwilight Yes, I see what you're saying, and now, I see a bit more of it, but also, I'm not sure that would stop very many kids doing it themselves, I see your idea is somewhat meant to be set in a reality where they pay attention to all those things, but I don't believe very many people have ever listened to common sense.

It's not just TikTok but I'm pretty much always on Discord. I think most of us know that it's obviously not always age appropriate. I'm not the type of person to try and get followers, friends, subscribers, etc. I'm just using it because it's a good way to contact friends. I understand the safety hazards but I'm not an attention seeker in any way. I don't try and look cool by learning all the new dances that involve *~innapropriate~* actions. (We all know which one I'm talking about.) I mainly do art and training my future guide dogs. Anything other than that, it's LGBTQ+ related and talking about how I found myself part of the non binary community.

Honestly my reason for disliking kids on tiktok and social media in general, is because they want to act like adults so badly they become so annoying. They see all these “cool and famous” people and want to be like them so much, they practically lose themselves. Many children these days smoke, drink, wear makeup and other things partially because they saw people on the internet looking really cool doing it. Of course, they will all deny it if asked but it’s obvious. It makes me kind of sad honestly, but also happy that I’m not one of them.

I think it's fine in moderation. I'm a teenager who in quarantine was on social media for quite a lot of time each day. Getting off of it for the past two, almost three weeks has been great. I don't know if I'll go back anytime soon, but at some point I probably will. Sure I might have bias, but with moderation and context we can combat the depressive influence social media has on us. The particular context to remember is that
    1. # of followers is a direct product of how many people you've met in real life or just arbitrarily followed on instagram. It's not indicative of how many actual friends you or anyone else has
    2. People's posts might make it seem as if they have all the friends in the world, but they're really posting their best moments. It's arguably better to experience those moments of friendship and kindness in your own life without a camera there and the pressure of posting it to social media
    3. Things can get difficult with social pressure in real life/non social media interactions, particularly the pressures surrounding competition and romance. I can speak from personal experience that I never really felt insecure about these arbitrary numbers and seldom compared the things my friends/people I knew would post online. But with social pressures around romance I became a lot more insecure and scared, and thus started comparing myself and spending more time on social media. When this happens, taking breaks (as short as an hour or as long as multiple months) really helps! I wish I did sooner.

I think a lot of it has to do with how much the internet spaces have changed as well. Go back a little less than 10 years ago, the dangers of the internet were basically scams, catfishing, predators and unfiltered shocking content (think creepypasta for example, or more serious, those gore websites sharing truly horrifying pictures and videos). Other than the horror aspect, they were pretty clear threats that you could navigate around with enough attention from your parents.
Today, as you said, it's way more subtle, and "influencers" are very normalized. At an age where you're building yourself, your beliefs, your aspirations, it's truly dangerous, and in a way that's way more difficult to fight. Echo chambers are a big problem as well.
Which is sad, because I have to admit the internet played a huge part in who I am today. I discovered so many things thanks to it, it made me accept myself in a way my parents or close circle never could, because they just weren't educated enough.
I had hoped younger children could maybe experience the same thing, but the truth is that I don't want them to be on the internet today. And it's even scarier when the plateforms have age recomandations that parents aren't making sure to respect!

I get a lot of what you're saying, I am not on socials yet, but am trying to get on insta. I think the thing with social media that is GOOD, is being social, people just, don't really know how to be social on these medias like facebook, instagram, tik tok, the whole 9 miles. At the end of the day, I think social media has just been corrupted for younger audiences. Kids should be able to be on social media, especially now with every body locked up in their homes, children just naturally need that outside interaction, and they are being denied. it would be beneficial if someone in a position of power, could realize this and start to make a change. I am going onto social media because a lot of organizations I am in use medias for distribution of information, and I am also a photographer, and want to share my content, I don't want to be one of those people who sits there all day scrolling and envying/hating/depressing themselves, that is another thing I think social medias are good for, is distribution of content

The main issue with kids and social media is, that COPPA prevents channels that are directed at children from advertising. So all the channels become "family channels" to avoid this regulation and suddenly everyone who wants to advertise becomes a family-channel, because all advertisers want to advertise to kids, but the only way to do it is by pretending the content is for adults too...
Advertisers have made the internet a Kindergarten and every adult needs to act like children are present at all times, because otherwise the advertisers don't make any money...
But I agree.. Kids should not have unrestricted access to the internet. Anything they consume should be monitored by their parents.
The internet is a public place and like all public places, they are not child-safe.

Currently I'm 25 and I almost have a zero social media pressence (with the exception of LinkedIn, of course). I do not have instagram tiktok, snapchat and use twitter and fb only as a news source by subscribing to reputable and trusted news sources. And yes, TH-cam for minecraft and doggo videos or music.
Though I do not expose myself to getting influenced or manipulated by marketing on these platforms, I am really interested in learning about social media marketing and digital marketing to pursue it as a career.

Another marshmallow every 30 minutes?! Unless I have a bunch of stuff to entertain myself, I wouldn't wait that long for ONE MORE marshmallow, that is just a waste of time 🤣

Sometimes I see someone on the internet being really rude and disrespectful, and I'm like "Ah! What if this negatively influences me?" So then I stick up my middle finger as a defense mechanism. I just realized how ironic that is.

The short answer is no - and that's all social media. They are too young to mentally cope with what may confront them, things that will go on to mould them into adulthood. At least when it was bullying/peer pressure in school you did have a chance to escape when you got home, it's 24/7 now and I know I'd not be here if I'd had that amount of pressure on me back then!
...and talking about likes... so much respect for you! Just gets frustrating not being able to talk back - could chat to you for hours...one day perhaps, when you're not such a busy bee ;)
