    333hp in 1983 in an Era where a "sportscar" had only 150-200hp. As I recall my dad's 1984 corvette had 205hp.

    • @MonkeyBarsEveryday
      @MonkeyBarsEveryday 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Those Corvette C4s were junk. They had 5.7L V8s but were restricted so much as a result of emissions standards in the US. They also had this "crossfire injection" system which was trash. You could easily make 330 horse out of the same platform.

    • @MonkeyBarsEveryday
      @MonkeyBarsEveryday 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The base model C3 (1968, predecessor to C4) made 300 horse

    • @bennyhannover9361
      @bennyhannover9361 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The Alpina B7 S were the fastest cars in 1979 1980, topspeed was 270 km/h when the M1 did 262 km/h and the Porsche 933 turbo did 259 km/h and the acceleration was also similar to 933 turbo the Porsche did about 5,8 sec to 62 miles , the Alpina did 5,7 sec to 62 miles.

    • @bennyhannover9361
      @bennyhannover9361 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you have to see that these 300 SAE hp were measured after the old methods with water cooling from external and with a Kick-starter, so that on a measuring instrument there might be 245hp left. Anyway to get close to such an Alpina you would need at least the 390hp versions from 1969 or a Big Block Corvette. Because the 330hp net match to about 410 hp measured in the way described above.

    Who says '80s are not cool? In my opinion the 6-series of the '80s is the best looking BMW, hands down. As well as the 7-series from the same area. But the coupe has an edge in the looks department. Today's BMW styling is an insult.

    • @davidg4026
      @davidg4026 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that the 6 is a great looking car but the e28 5-series has much better proportions in my eyes, and is the best looking, to me, from that era. I just can't get over how awkward the e24 looks from the B-pilar back, with its huge quarter windows and downturned trunk, it really ruins the overall look. Shame, considering how amazing the long hood and aggressive shark nose front end looks.
      Don't even get me started on the 7-series, the designers got that one all wrong.

      Not in the classic era that the film talks of. Go compare a C2 or B3 2.7 Alpina E30 with an M3 of the same year they were far superior. Still a bargain too at half the price. Not sure for how much longer though :)

    I owned a B10 535 Alpina while stationed in Germany in the 1990s. That was a fun car to own over there. It was forest green and was such a beast to drive. I use to cruise down the autobahn and B roads as fast as that car would go for hours. I bought it for 5K sold it for 8K to an officer. I still kick myself for not keeping it somehow.

    The owner of BMW shop where I worked in the late 90s had a B6 2.8, based on the E-30. It was an absolutely fantastic car to drive. I’ve been a BMW tech for 22 years now and it is still my hands down favorite, and I’ve driven virtually every M car ever built. I had a 1979 Euro spec 635csi with the sport gearbox, while it was no Alpina, it was still an awesome car in it’s own right. I miss the connected feeling of the older BMWs.

    • @vk3kvk
      @vk3kvk 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are right, they are I believe part owner of some vineyards in Hungary, but the majority of wine they sell comes from other vineyards. They actually make as much money with wines as they make with cars. Burkhard Bovensiepen ,the owner of ALPINA made another hobby of him into a business. if you look at pictures taken from above the factory, the building on the left is the "wine cellar"! They are very well known to sell excellent wines from all over the world. Not cheap but very very good. The best cars in the world, combined with the best wines!Savoir vivre:-)!

    Alpina is a brand. It says Alpina on the registration,not BMW Alpina like for example Mercedes AMG. Alpina gets a bare shell from BMW and build the car as an Alpina. And my god they are fu**ing awesome! The E24 especially,damn what a beautiful design,be it a BMW or Alpina

    • @WhitewalkerII
      @WhitewalkerII 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Alpina used to get bare shells from BMW. This isn't the case anymore. Alpinas are now built on BMW's production line, with Alpina parts mounted by BMW (Alpina supplies the parts). Then the almost finished cars are sent to Alpina where they are finished.
      Concerning registration in North America it says only "BMW" because Alpina is not recognised as a manufacturer there. The North American cars keep their BMW VIN.

    • @verliebt3465
      @verliebt3465 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +EVILSPAWN1003 not true. all Alpina cars keep their original BMW VIN number and have a second Alpina VIN number added.Just by having a BMW VIN proves they are just tuned/modified/improved upon by Alpina.

    • @EVILSPAWN1003
      @EVILSPAWN1003 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Verliebt "Since 1983 Alpina has been recognized by the German Federal Ministry of Transport as an automobile manufacturer, thus Alpina-built cars are branded and registered as Alpina instead of BMW, although an Alpina can be bought and serviced at local BMW dealerships, and covered if there is a warranty issue."

    • @verliebt3465
      @verliebt3465 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      EVILSPAWN1003 that's not true either. they're registered as BMW Alpina, not just Alpina. You can service them at BMW dealers because they share a great deal of parts with regular BMWs. Alpina modifies the engine and interior, plus some cosmetic changes on the outside, other than that, the cars are identical to any other BMW.

    • @EVILSPAWN1003
      @EVILSPAWN1003 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Verliebt Yes it fucking is you plonker!
      No one is disputing that it`s "identical" to other BMW`s,they come off the same assembly line for fuck sake!
      It`s that the Alpina ones are registered as
      Alpinas,not BMW`s. The STATE OF GERMANY recognise Alpina as a manufacturer,not a tuner. It`s not like AMG
      which is "Mercedes AMG",a Alpina is
      an Alpina B7,not a BMW Alpina B7.

    I've loved Alpina's since I discovered them age 10 in 1981, when I was taken to the annual BMW car club by my dad at BMW GB in Bracknell in the UK. I just love Alpina's philosophy of make it faster, make it nicer, but make it also so usable and not track focused like M cars. M cars, the only ones I truly desire are the M635csi and the E34 M5 in 3.8 guise. Alpina's, I just love them all and would love to have an E24 Alpina, but it's probably never going to happen, but, a B3s E46, is a possibility and one I want so badly.

    The engine sound. I will miss the pure engine sound in the future when all the cars would be electric. I think that even if it's mandatory to have all electric cars in the future, we should preserve the "old" cars. Because they aren't simple "means of transport". They are part of humanity's history...

    These classic Alpinas are amazing. Today, the Bovensiepen's have grown desperately fat and lazy on the automotive front and produce cars that are less focussed than the stuff from M-Division. There isn't a single manual gearbox in the current Alpina lineup for a start. Frankly, they should sell the Alpina brand to someone with less wine and ink in their veins and a bit more petrol.

      You don't seem to get what Alpina is all about. Alpina has always had more emphasis on luxury, higher torque and overall comfortablity then the M division(which is all about track times and handling)

    • @WhitewalkerII
      @WhitewalkerII 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      colin5577 It seems thats BMW doesn't allow them to make outstanding cars anymore like the B7S, B10 BT, B12 or B8 4.6. Currently all Alpinas are slower than M models, that's not a coincidence. I wonder how Alpina managed to get the right to produce the B5 and B6 Edition 50 (with more hp than M models). This is not only my opinion.
      Something which is my opinion : why Alpina withdrew from GT3 racing the year BMW entered the competition ? Alpina was successful and had been participing in GT3 racing for only 4 years which is clearly not a lot. This is also strange.

    • @colin5577
      @colin5577 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      spekhugger Well, I get what Alpina is about now. It just doesn't tally with how they got started or with the ethos that motivated the factory when they made the cars that built their brand. Back in the day, had Alpina been let loose on a Z8, they'd have turned up the wick on it and made it a bit more focused. The philosophy that takes something like a Z8 and sticks a relatively low revving V8 into it and adds an automatic gearbox suggests more than a bit of middle-aged spread about the brand. These days, Alpina make, for the most part, a charming variety of slightly better finished BMW diesels. Christ.

    Neat cars from a great time to own a BMW product - I used to pull 2002 motors in my garage -- tear them completely down and rebuilt them in two weeks -- everything was simple -- no magic and computers. The B7 Alpina is nice but it certainly won't take anything on the road these days (as stated in the video) -- my Grand Cherokee SRT would eat it.

    Alpina's are absolutely gorgeous! - They have more torque than M cars. More time is spent on the luxury and quality than just making a sports car. End result is you have a sports car with high quality luxury and something which s not common. You will turn heads for sure when you're on the road in a Alpina than a standard M car!

    "Auto Motor & Sport", a german car magazine had a test and gathered some B7s and B7 coupes many years ago. (E28 and E24)
    All turbo-models, and most of them had outputs over 400bhp... :D
    Up northwest a E28 with four men onboard owned a guy on a Honda CBR900RR; On the straights! 290km/h... :D
    This was in the mid 90's.
    Those were the days.
    We were young and a bit mad, and had loads of fun! ;)

    (1) 2002 had the best driver vision, like being in a glass dome. (2) They were made for cornering (3) You could work on them yourself and there was a great aftermarket network to soup up performance.

    I don't have anywhere near the collection you do, but by accident I happen to pick up a dream come true.
    I contacted an east coast collector, while looking for parts and he told me to do everything I could to restore my e30 back to factory conditions,...or to call him and he would buy it so that it can be restored.
    I have a white 325i convertible, with an automatic and cardinal red interior.
    The collector I spoke with said the color combination was a lot more popular in Europe and that blackstock at American dealerships are the whole reason that color combination is here.
    BMW never sent one of these directly to the states from the factory.
    He also said that there were only 3 thousand automatic convertibles sold in 1989.
    According to him, because she also has the cardinal red interior, WITH THE FACTORY RED CARPET.
    Then she's one of a 120.
    Can you confirm this?

  • @bradchang5076

    The secret to Alpina was the chassis and suspension tuning! My ex-girlfriend had a 323 turbo Alpina and it came across to the US via gray market and was equipped with Scheel racing seats, bilstein shocks, camber kits, extra large sway bars and was lowered for track use. This thing blew away M cars at the road race tracks ...which were mainly focused on engine tuning. BMW made a big mistake when the only bought Motorsport and not Alpina. I don't believe that BMW ever brought over 323 turbos in the 1st generation 3 series. The power plant was from the 633 turbo euro car. People at the race track had never seen a Bimmer handle like that Alpina! Beautiful car and a pleasure to drive. I don't believe that it had dog cut gears in it... like this owner mentioned.

I wrecked the car in Germany back in the late 80s, while in the AirForce . That car was a blast , had a huge rear end ratio . The acceleration was amazing.

    I used to own an Alpina BMW until a couple of years ago... a C2 2.7 E30 - great car. Huge difference between it an a regular E30 in everything from power to handling. Unfortunately I had to let it go to a better home, since I couldn't afford to maintain it anymore... Parts for alpina cars are very rare and extremely expensive... something as simple as a rear spring can be a huge pain in the ass to source. I do miss it tough...

    • @williamgson4055

      No, turbocharge the existing engine instead. Things like the manifold, intake etc can be custom made or maybe sourced from some wrecked Alpina car. BMW straight sixes are sturdy. But please, don't molest a 635csi, they are kinda rare.
