Lego City - I Felt It

  • The layout is nearly complete. One simple step left.
As many of you know, baseplates have an annoying habit of sticking to the surface they are on. My theory is that the bottom of the studs creates a suction cup effect. Whatever causes it, the bigger the build you have on the baseplate, the harder it can be to move. An easy way to prevent that is to lay felt down on your table.
The nice thing about felt is that it is a rather inexpensive fabric and the bolts are much larger than other types of fabric, so a yard of felt goes further. If you have never purchased fabric, what you see in the store is a bolt. Fabric is folded over on the bolt, so it is twice as wide as what you see. When you ask for a yard, two yards, etc., that is the length you are getting. With felt, a yard ends up being more than a square yard (but I haven't done the math to figure out the specifics).
the other nice thing about felt is that it adds some color to your otherwise plain table until you have enough Lego creations to cover it. Moreover, if you are working with something other than a table with a smooth top - such as plywood, it gives you an extra layer of protection from slivers and imperfections that usually come from plywood.
Once you have your felt, I recommend getting fabric scissors (and don't use them for anything other than fabric when you get them - yes, I spent way to much time in fabric stores with my mother growing up). When I cut, I left enough excess to drape over the edges, so I can ultimately use a staple gun to secure it to the bottom of the table. If you only cut enough to cover your table and your table has a smooth surface, your felt will move around too much and you will have created an entirely different problem for yourself.
I hope you found this video useful. See you next time.

Any time. It is a bit of a mess, but wouldn't take long to clean up.

Alex, you totally messed up my analytics. Everything prior to your video Saturday looks like a flat line. :) Thank you. And to think, I had just considered hanging it up that morning. Now, I have to get building.

I had to laugh at the emphatic warning about cutting paper with fabric scissors. I come from a family of sewers/quilters and do so myself. That's a lesson you learn very early in life. Lol

Very true - getting scolded by your mom leaves lasting impressions. (I was going to say it cuts deep, but that would have been a bad pun.)

Asked this of Alex on his video with you... But will there be good/bad diplomatic relations between your two cities? 😂 Love your set up. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

My city could never compete with his - I don't have the square footage to dedicate to this project. So the relationship will be good. Besides, he just doubled my subs, so I owe him.

Man, I saw your buildings on ALEX’s channel. They look amazing. I’m currently building a lego city as well, but I do t have anything on the scale of your twins to put into my city. Great job!!!

The Nikon is actually quite good, just unwieldy - but I just got a GoPro 9 (now I just have to figure out how to use it).

@@JohnnyBricks Good to know. I never upload in anything less than 1080p (I'll have to see if I can figure out what the problem is).

I would really like to know what happened with TH-cam when they changed the upload method - It takes my forever (and like this video} sometimes never to get the thumbnail to work. I never had that problem before. We'll see if this video gets any views without a thumbnail.
