To everyone who would want to know the brushes Yoneyama-sensei used in this video, as far as my eyesight is concerned, I think she used "Lighter pencil" with modified setting on hardness for sketch, "Mapping pen" for almost everything, from lineart to filling the colors with some modified settings too (I think), and filled some colors with "Darker pencil". By the way, the software is Clip Studio Paint and most of her brushes are there in default. This is purely skill on how to use the tools! This is such a very good illustration video. Thank you for sharing the progress Yoneyama-sensei!

Some things i picked up on while watching mai's process - dynamic angles are fun and should be explored - sometimes as you go through refining, the more recent drafts are worse than the original, and that's okay. keep working on it nonetheless if you're unsatisfied. - Don't regret restarting your progress back to a blank canvas. A muddied paper will not show further details you add on - start with big, obvious shapes, and big, obvious brushes. then work your brush size smaller as you add details. - when coloring, be sure to distinguish btwn foreground, middleground, and bg in tone! (i still suck at this, but it's important to remember for composition) - don't be afraid to edit the line art as you go - when applying gradients, don't be afraid to go buck wild! Don't vary just the value--alter the hue, the tint, and make sure it's still distinguishable even if your work is viewed from afar - Always make sure to check if your details can be viewed from afar! - try blurring stuff when they aren't the focus of the picture

I guess I just have to get over my hatred of drawing the same thing twice, and my fear of having to start completely over...

Keep making new thumbnails for the concept (obviously changing things as you went) if you still felt off about it. Then, even IF you liked your first try...you can at least say you've reviewed the other options, and feel better about your decision. Especially if you do their second most repeated advice: Walk away. Feel stuck? Been drawing for a while? Get up, take a break for 15-30 minutes (or more) then come back to it. look at it as you're walking towards it. Sometimes looking at it from far away helps pick up on mistakes. But now you have fresh eyes that haven't been staring at it. It's easy to get used to and zone out on stuff when we've been looking at it for a long time. So by giving yourself a break every once in a while, you can keep an accurate and refreshed perspective on your work.
@@K1chi3 ??? Line art is really important tho. I've studied chinese modern drawing methods, and am familiar with people who have studied fine art in Japan. Similar principles are applied in fine art to commercial art, especially manga. Understanding line work is treated as more important that shading. This comes from principles that are derived from Asian art. If you want to draw manga properly, you have to have good line work. Lines express emotion, values, emphasis, hierarchy, and movement.
The cooling filter applied at the end really makes it cinematic and more polished, but I also likes the colour scheme without the filter. The warmer tone just conveys the feeling of morning sunlight in the spring so well.
Actually I've been working on a small illustration and I was having a very hard time. I wanted to make this illustration to have a semi-realistic anime style, but I noticed since I haven't draw much in anime style, things got ugly very easily. I've been exploring watercolor portraits for almost a decade now, so composing a face in anime style is quite challenging. I've been drafting the piece for more than 10 times up to a point that I wanted to give up. I felt like a big fail because I couldn't nail this small piece or I couldn't get to the point that I wanted to achieve in determined period of time. But I saw this video of yours and I learned that you did the drafting/sketching multiple times, changing and adjusting along the way, even after the coloring was nearly done. I was thinking to myself that what I experiencing is actually okay... It's okay to have it NOT in one go, it's okay to make the whole thing and redo it again from 0. it's okay not to finish it within a day or two. art is a journey that you have to embark on in order to move forward and make progress. it's not about your goal, it's how you achieve it. Not everyone has the same start and so do I, so I should not be too hard on myself. So, this might mean nothing, you may just want to share your drawing process and whatnot, but I feel so much relieved to watch, learn and understand every part of your process through this video. 私なら絶対当初の輪郭を失いたくなくて、ガウスかけたりスプレーブラシ使うことに躊躇しちゃうと思う...。
イラストの遠近法って大げさなくらいが丁度良いんですね。
