As a women I can say that in my experience I don't advertise that I'm a woman when playing video games. Depending on the game and the community you are interacting with being a known woman can be detrimental to your gaming experience so its better not to bring it up. I also lean more towards single player games so I don't have to risk these interactions to begin with. On another note when I went to college to get into game design the most gatekeeping/discrimination I experience were other women in the industry. Not saying this is the norm but it was one of the factors that made me change my career path.

just watched a video yesterday where a female gamer posted clips of her streaming Valorant, many male players, once she admited she's a girl, started calling her names, insulting her in a sexual way, and making advances towards her asking her to do sexual stuff. the audacity totally blew my mind as i've never played Valorant.

Same. In fact, my username here and everywhere online is intentionally misleading so men won't bother me. I don't advertise my gender in a game. Ever. Men can give anecdotal evidence of playing women and not getting harassed all they like. But it's happened to me enough that I have zero desire to experience it again. So, have your anime waifus if it keeps you from harassing women. I won't complain as long as there are enough options in a game that I can pull for an aesthetic I prefer.

I was in an Art History class in college. The Classical era of art depicted nudity, and everyone was mostly ok with it because the people featured in the art are mostly representations of nonexistent characters.
Like, the best excuse for drawing your naked girlfriend is making them do a pose and say that it's a picture of Venus. Although, it is mostly for the male gaze, it was socially acceptable because Venus isn't a real person.
To be honest, we need people to separate fantasy from real life again. It's annoying seeing immature people taking sexualization in today's works of art too seriously. It ain't that deep, just accept the tits and don't show it to children, it's that simple.

Why do you automatically assume that the problem of hypersexuality isn't that it's repulsive (seriously how have you never considered this in your life, what's wrong with you) and is instead that it changes... something in some people's psyches? @@Strip4Dreezy while we are a little sheltered in modern times, i would hardly consider it to be the only reason that opinions and practises have shifted when it comes to nudity. Frankly your own comment has a nugget of information that you overlook, advancement. In most nations, even a 3rd world one like mine, the standard of living is far beyond what it was in those days. People no longer typically have little to no rags to cover themselves to protect against dirt and the elements and knowledge of things such as health and hygiene have proliferated. Public bath houses? maybe in asia but currently in the west its non existent due to irrelevance, and sure, there was nudity in art but it was far from pornography ie not meant to titillate unlike say ecchi or hentai art though some rich individuals did commission art for that purpose and kept it private.
Nudity in classical art as far back as ancient greece was done as an embodiment of ideals of perfection and beauty. Greek and roman art would later be the basis for much of what was made in the renaissance and is part of why achievement in representing the body became a standard for measuring artistic genius in that era.
According to an exhibition called The Renaissance Nude (October 30, 2018-January 27, 2019) which tackled myths about nudity and art in that era among other things, the use of the nude in art, particularly religious art, was controversial during the Renaissance. Images of beautiful bodies can be highly sensual, which made some observers uncomfortable-then as much as no, eg. Fra Bartolommeo, a Dominican friar, scandalized a Florentine congregation by painting an altarpiece of a beautiful nude Saint Sebastian wearing only a transparent veil over his genitals. Women found it so alluring, it was said, that the priests deemed it safer for parishioners’ souls to remove it from the church.

I think people forget that there are women who are also horndogs.
There are people of both sexes that are harder to cater to. If you think there aren't women drooling over male characters' physiques, then you're just imposing your own values onto others. Some parts of video games existing shouldn't matter if you aren't the target audience. I'll draw a parallel to a non-sexual aspect of video games for this:
I _hate_ horror aspects in video games. I get lightheaded, shakey, and (especially with gore) nauseous. I have never once called for people to stop making horror games or for people to stop putting gore in video games. Sure it would be nice if there were a toggle, and I hate it when gore is shoved into games that it doesn't need to be in, but I won't fault the developer or players for my inability to tolerate what they love. I find it sad that I can't enjoy or play the same games (like Phasmophobia or GTFO) as my friends, but it is not their fault that I can't handle horror. I don't think of people who tolerate or enjoy horror as odd, I just see that we see things differently.
I know not liking disproportionate body sizes or revealing clothing is a far cry from being on the verge of an anxiety or panic attack, but it's in the same general ballpark. I cannot control that I feel like vomiting when I see a reanimated corpse, just as some men and women can't control feeling disgust when they see a grossly unrealistic sexual depiction.

They will immediately sexualise you and ask the most uncomfortable questions just because of my gender. Do not get me started on cosplaying, this goes for both men and women, me and my brother cosplay together a lot and visit cons and just because we are dressed as anime characters, some people outright treat us as they would the real character. The fact they are so delusional and stuck in their little online world is genuinely disturbing. My brother literally got stopped by women when he cosplayed gojo just for them to sexualise him straight to his face, same thing happened to me when I was cosplaying yoimiya. So how many of those 300 000 called in? 10 000? 1000? No, usually between 8 - 10 people, those are the people you'll hear speaking up, the other 99% are perfectly fine and can separate fiction from reality.

I don’t think sexualisation in media leads to negative behaviours, I think people who already have those behaviours tend to be attracted to the video games where sexualisation and objectification happen. Those people then ruin the reputation of the entire sector because of their pre-existing behaviours, and then pass on those beliefs through the sector as well. My little cousin for example, he wasn’t a problem until he started playing co-op and multiplayer games, he learned a certain behaviour set from the people he played with and it became his norm. The video game didn’t make him like that, the bad people playing it did. In raiden case: Dealing with Eternity, Her story quest explores the consequences of her pursuit of Eternity and the Vision Hunt Decree. We see her grapple with the pain and loss her actions have caused, and ultimately witness a shift in her perspective.
In ayaka case: Duty vs. Desire, Ayaka story quest showcases her internal conflict between her duty to the Kamisato Clan and her personal desires. We see her struggle with the weight of responsibility and her longing for freedom. Ayaka's decision to dance in public represents a break from tradition and a step towards embracing her individuality. This shows her courage and willingness to challenge societal expectations.

Sexualisation of characters in my opinion is ok as long as that’s not the only thing that there is to them. I’m a woman and I think female characters in sexualised outfits are badass if they do badass shit and have badass personalities to go with it. Specially villains.
Now if a character has a sexualised outfit and the only thing they do is dote on men be there to be the bud of the joke by the male characters or just the love interest then I hate it.
Because sexualisation can both be a form of either empowerment or degradation depending on the circumstances.
Example: if a fucking goddess descended on earth and could shatter all our souls and not even man’s most descriptive weapon could touch her hair who cares that she’s wearing nothing but a thong? She’s above everyone.
Now if let’s say a story got a r*ape victim or a very naive girl that’s been shown that can be manipulated easily or is very innocent and that people can take advantage of them easily then yes the sexualisation makes. You feel like a piece of shit

    @RobertRoland-vs2qg 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Not a native speaking here, feel free to correct any spelling mistakes!
I think this subject is kinda complicated to deal with...
I mean About Nicole in ZZZ, I think she's a okay character, for what they are advertising... I see her breasts more like a device for the comedy they decided that she would do... You can think it's silly, I do; it's pretty ridiculous, but that's okay, because that's the whole vibe the game is selling since day one that is "don't being so serious although having a more mature target audience."
HOWEVER, what some people, that we tend to call "justice warriors", don't have any talking skills to politely say and make their point is that: The problem is not a character having "big boobs" the problem might be when the "big boobs" might have a character. As I said above IT'S OKAY HAVING NICOLE BEING THAT SEXUALIZED FOR THE JOKE but most people are so sick of the culture of sexualization that you can track back like... to Lara Croft and Samus(or even older games) They sometimes are just making girls being attractive by their looks, boobs, buts and everything EXCEPT for their personality(I know that might sound cringe) but the effect that might do is that we end up being so used to see a woman as a sexual object, that sometimes, as Teccy said, some men can't deal with women like human beings... and that affects us men, but also affects A LOT the women too.
Also, I do understand the whole argument of "Do the change you wanna see in the world" but just going to "point zero" and develop this kind of culture in games, it's not that simple for a indie company, we can totally achieve that, but... How long it's going to take to build up a culture to have a majority of "healthy" characters in games? it's like buying this fight from those big companies just doing games it's not simple and we could have more girls in gamer community if we just could ask the companies to do this minimum of putting more effort constructing appealing female characters by their personality, story, actions and impact into the plot than putting effort to make a girl that is solely physically pleasing for men.
But yeah, I get it, I'm more like into some Leftish kind of thinking, And even i admit some of those people are just TOO OVER trying to be a hero, so doing that, when they start a conversation they already think you are inferior because you are "objectively wrong" that sucks I know. That's not what I'm trying to do here, I just thinks this should really be discussed.
So, Summarizing everything I've have said: I think characters having big boobs are okay... I think having characters that the point of them is to have big boobs MIGHT be okay... if this wasn't a culture to only sexualize girls in fiction without giving them a proper soul and making a character that the only function is to make men have an erection.

The male/female split makes sense in my mind once you account for all that goes into that number. As a dude you can just play whatever, whenever and you're vibing. For women, if you count single player, party and mobile gamers that's probably a good chunk. Then you have gals that like games with limited multiplayer (Animal Crossing) or games that don't rely on voice communication very heavily. Then you have gals that just wanna game in peace. So they either don't speak or have their own inside group.
I also imagine that data is pretty open ended. They ask if you're a gamer/play video games and note it down. We, just like any other group, do have pockets of elitists and gatekeepers who ruin and discourage open enthusiasts. If you dig a little deeper into some real life examples, take a look at the difference in how men and women are complicated. Also, for the longest I thought women had acne because of makeup, now that I am getting older, never having worn makeup in my life, I can assure you, women have acne because of hormones and their cyncle, not because of makeup (altho it will help, if you dont wash your makeup off). For the longest I've been on hormonal birthcontrol, never had any breakouts. I've been off birthcontrol for 3 years now, and I look like a fucking teenager.

You DID notice that modern western games all have super sexy men, while all women are uglified and barely have breasts, right? Nobody bats an eyelid at sexualization of males, but raise a shitshow over a female having a nice body, even if completely clothed. I myself have been sexualized since I was around 12, school was ridiculous for me. I don’t mind the sexualization of game characters but I feel it’s one sided because video games are typically made for men. I wanna see man titty, I’m tired of all the women, if you sexualize a character then the men better be like that too. It always irritated me in games where a man will be wearing tactical gear and his female companion is wearing like booty shorts and a crop top where you can see every crevice of her body. But that’s why BG3 is so great, you can put a skimpy outfit on a male or female companion

Its sort of like a snake eating its own tail here
More men play games - games cater to men - drives women away from games - more men play games
Its hard because the way to even things out is by showing that women are an equally profitable market for devs to target, but the data doesn't support that so devs don't do it, and because devs don't do it, women don't play those games and hence the data keeps reflecting that its not profitable to cater to women.
Its very cyclical but i think its improving, albeit rather slowly but hopefully games like baldurs gate continue to be popular where we combine nerdier games that generally haven't been marketed to women, with themes and design that does so women are more inclined to be playing those games, hence building a bigger female gaming market.
And im not talking generally, for example gacha games already succeed on this front relatively well and establish relatively even splits of male:female player base, but this is not the same case for the fps genre for example.

Obviously that is a stupid thing to say, it's okay to ask that the things you like be in more videogames when it doesn't conflict with the games premise or identity. It's understandable to want attractive hunks in games with attractive babes, but it would be wierd to ask for such in say animal crossing or COD (maybe older cod games, newer ones have an array of crossovers and overt sexualisation so it could be there, i mean im pretty sure they had a rambo collab where he's obviously half naked because he's freakin rambo so it wouldn't ve out of the ordinary there to an extent.)
There is a disproportionate amount of sexy women compared to sexy men in games, i think it's okay to try and even it out by introducing more sexy men, i would disagree with the solution being to remove sexy women however, and again to place it in games where it has no place.

Now about sexualization in games, for real as long as you don't go crazy or unable to distinguish reality and fiction then there's literally no harm done with it, both for men and women, sometimes most of the issues that he pointed in the video could be solved with a simply: "I know this isn't real and I won't be expecting this in my partner in real life." The real problem lies in that same own lack of judgment that some, ehem "feminists" have unable to recognize fiction or in a simple manner are insecure about their own physique, see a "better" physique on anime/videogame women, then cry about it online and that's where we are at now.

look, I understand that both female AND male bodies in video games are unrealistic, but I think for a lot of people that is not the point. The point is that the often used female character body does not make sense in the setting it usually is used in. Male bodytypes are of course extremely exaggerated, but it would make sense - bigger body equals more strenght. This is not the case for the exaggerated bodytypes of woman - big boobs, revealing clothes, small and petite bodies. Look, if a female character is sexualized I am all for it if it makes sense. Take Evelynn in League of Legends for example. Demon Succubus being almost naked makes absolute sense, but why would Miss Fortune in the same game dress like a fcking prostitute? And to say men are being sexualized too is of course a valid point, but as you already said, it does not happen to often. And back to the bodytypes, we have a ton of variety when it comes to male bodytypes, compared to that there are like 2 bodytypes used on female characters. And don't say that it is the peak female body, there is literally a photoshoot with woman in different sports being at their peak who definetely have a shit ton of variety as well.

Why are so many people especially from the West, especially social activists so damn obsessed with morality and justifications over a video game, to the point they demand Countries around the world to change for them and also to control what the people living in other Countries, can or cannot see? Furthermore, often make sweeping judgements base on studies done only in Western/USA Culture and/or using only Western/USA point of view, completely forgetting that other Countries have their own cultures and views on it?
Hardly anyone I know demands Western entertainment to change, we just enjoy as it is given because we knowingly are consuming a foreign entertainment and maybe see things we disagree with or find problematic, for example, out of place making out sex scenes in the cinemas! But Activists from the West just love to demand others change.

30:23 it is true imo. I don’t really show that I play games and I don’t go to conventions etc but still most of my female collègues/friends turn out to be gamers. Like really haha I can hardly think of a female friend not playing games and then I would need to ask them since I’m not sure.

Most woman play games like candy crush when the men's gaming community don't put candy crush as a real game

Woman here. I got a mastectomy in 2021 & not having boobs has been a bit hard. I love boobs. I wish I still had them lol. Fr let them be out. People telling women on the red carpet to not show so much cleavage AND the people saying no big boobs in video games are perpetuating the perceived idea that boobs are a sexual organ. They aren’t. Let women show cleavage irl, let anime girls have massive honkers. People who are upset can do as much protesting as possible, it’s not going to change, because companies make so much money from it. People have to just accept it won’t change or else it’s going to upset them forever.

Entertainment can change perceptions, but not nature. Japan issues are cost of living like everywhere else. Too many people want their cut out of the population's income, so there is nothing left for family building. So populations decline, unhappiness rises, it's that simple at a macro level.

Live action media portrayals of women/men would do more damage then video games/anime portrayals. Most gamers know characters aren't real/realistic, seeing celebrities/models etc portrayed as "fit" is the bigger issue.

@@ShuckleII Yes it is obvious to some and yet wasn't addressed in this video. I see a lot of people complaining how women are sexualised in games because their proportions/outfits are ridiculous. This is an issue, especially for young kids, but its not as bad as some might think. Those complaining about games in this way should be more concerned by what is seen as "normal" for every day girls/women.

You can make characters hot without overly sexualizing them. I think star rail does a good job of that but Nikke is like so obviously just for the male gaze. But once again, its kinda weird that a topic like this is men discussing with men. Then again, men not taking women's opinion on things has been happening since the dawn of time.

literally this is men being happy abt things men should want. Unfortunately a lot of these games are not based in the US, but Japan where they are rampant over sexualize women. This ran rampant In 1980s American slashers / horror movies, Tectone isn’t gonna get it at this age

Who tf is saying that this topic is only being discussed by men for men? I’ve seen many content creators of the opposite sex talk about this topic as well on this app.
And how many discussions did you watch where men dismiss a woman’s opinion on this topic that wasn’t on Twitter 💀
Shout out to the CEO of Azur Lane who is a woman that understands her audience and gives them what they want in their gacha. Big titty Anime women 😤

Something guys don't understand is that because of society, culture differences, and individual experiences women don't advertise their gaming hobbies.
There were years where there were more average women than men.
But because of the culture around video games whether its personal or professional there's numerous motivations for women to stay quiet.

i think some female gamers just need to block toxic men and move onive had a few bad experiences but that didnt stop me from enjoying whatever game i play
