    I had a 16 Tacoma and now a 17 Colorado. Both good pickups, but Chevy shifts smoother, rides much quieter, has much easier to operate and see navigation, and the beds are 100% metal. And my mileage with Colorado is almost identical. My Tacoma shifted rough and seat fabric showed wear at less than 20k mikes.

      Xander Turner The ZR2 was more than a "one-up" over the Tacoma TRD Pro. They delivered a truck with a front locker, a diesel engine option, a more powerful V6, an 8sp automatic, heavy duty cast iron control arms vs the TRD Pro's weaker stamped steel control arms, and high end spool valve shocks designed by the famous Multimatic that can perform better on road and off-road whereas the Fox Shocks Toyota chose don't offer the adjustable dampening and rebound rates found in the better Fox Shocks. Plus the ZR2 comes with modern rear disc brakes vs the Tacoma's old drum brakes.

      As a loyal, 27 years loyal, GM customer, I bought my first Toyota in August, and will never go back. Due primarily to absolutely piss poor dealer support, but that support was needed due to a recurring problem that was never taken care of until I unloaded the vehicle at the Toyota dealer.

    I don't know about the 2017 models but my friend has a tacoma and i have a colorado and the only way to make a decision on these are if you're going to be towing stuff around a lot get the duramax colorado and if you want to go off roading more get the tacoma (or zr2) and if both of those don't matter choose whatever one looks better in your opinion and what feels more comfortable for you. I got the colorado since i liked the styling more, I've had my 2016 z71 for 1 year now and i have 0 complaints

    perfect review for me. I'm currently looking at these exact trim levels and as you I currently have the Chevy winning out. it should be worth mentioning that the 🌮 does have the TRD Off Road and and TRD Pro Trim Levels and the Colorado has the ZR2. At the top it still remains a fight with suspension taking center stage. both are great trucks but the Chevy seems like a better value although the taco has a better resale. it's just so hard to choose. interested on your thoughts. Thanks for the well done video.

    I like the Colorado! I do not like the smart key systems, I prefer to have an actual key for my car. While I do like the aggressive exterior styling of the Tacoma TRD, I absolutely HATE the dash styling in it and there is no way I would look at it daily for several years. Overall I think the Colorado is a better truck for the money, and it would be my choice.

    • @ryanbishop7327
      @ryanbishop7327 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also the colorado doesn't have an option for crawl control which the TRD off road has.

    • @jessehernandez5043
      @jessehernandez5043 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude Rad crawl control is for amateurs. all that does is allow the less skilled to think they can do things they aren't ready for. put it in low range and let it crawl on it's own

    • @ryanbishop7327
      @ryanbishop7327 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jesse - If you have never been stuck then you are taking too easy of trails. Everyone gets stuck and for me driving and camping on the beach the crawl assist is awesome getting out of sand you sunk into overnight. Instead of digging with a shovel I can use crawl control.

    • @jessehernandez5043
      @jessehernandez5043 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude Rad never said I've never been stuck. I said crawl control is for amateurs, providing a false sense of confidence. I've trapped a taco intentionally in sand and mud and the crawl control was useless. just sat there for all that time making no progress. air down, get proper tires, and stop parking directly on the sand and lay something down first. easy things that you learn from doing and not letting "crawl control" be your so called master solution to anything and everything.

    • @ryanbishop7327
      @ryanbishop7327 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why lay something down and buy new tires when I have crawl control and it works? You assume I do not "do" but i have done all of that with past trucks. Why not use modern technology to make things easier?

  • @Bossinova

    Tacoma gets my vote, more aggressive looking which is I like, it’s got more clearance and better fuel economy, no one races trucks all day every day at least for normal people so HP isn’t that big of a deal to me, you can still go fast and tow what you need. Tacoma is it for me, might get one this weekend, I’ll compare with the Colorado’s in person though.

  • @Stenchx
    @Stenchx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    To give points for styling seems pretty silly because that is totally subjective. Also a point goes to the taco for better mileage but then you give them another point for range, kinda seems like the same thing because gas tanks in the class are generally the same size or very close.

    I must say that is not the high end Colorado. The Z71 Midnight Edition is the high end. Plus you have the option to go with Diesel. But then like my Z71 Midnight Edition, I have the Extended bed, and I upgraded the Bose system in it to the Premium 7 speaker Bose package which I think sounds MUCH better. Doesn't matter what kind of music you listen to. It is way better. If you go by sticker price alone, and not what i actually paid for the truck, the sticker was $43,010. just an FYI. Also for the nice Chrome accent the Midnight Edition is SEXY! I keep editing. you really got to check out the higher end Colorado. Mine does have auto dimming rear view mirror, and auto rear window.

  • @k.r.v.4219
    @k.r.v.4219 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes the Z71 does of course come out on top. But this reviewer actually gave the Tacoma points for a fake hood scoop and chrome grill? I bet in a couple years GM will upgrade the little DuraMax with a real functioning hood scoop! Maybe even adding it to the gas engine truck!

    some things you think are advantages are the opposite to others. for instance you prefer the 8 inch screen but when going aftermarket most are 7 inches. to go with a aftermarket head unit (stereo) with the colorado means you will most likely have to use a shitty, cheap face plate that doesnt match anything else on the dash to fill in the gap.

    I owned the 2015 Colorado and my fuel mileage on it was best of 28.6 mpg at 70 miles and hour and traded it in because of the location of the 4 wheel drive switch on the left side of the steering wheel cause every time I stepped out of it it would switch to 4wd and then there is no light or notification that it is on unless you tilt your head sideways around the steering wheel to see the little light that is on the switch because there is no 4x4 light located in the instrument panel. Piss poor planning on Chevrolet I think. On the Tacoma which is a 2016 model with the new 3.5 I have yet to get to even 18 mpg at 70 mph. It sees a hill and whatever they did to the computer on this truck as you step a little to keep it at 70 the truck shifts down from 6th gear to 4th gear and fights to go up the hill and will stay in 4th gear all the way up the hill till it crest the hill and then shift back to 5th gear. And a few hundred feet further will then go back to 6th gear. So for fuel mileage I say drive them before you state the Tacoma deserves the point on mileage. It sure does not. If I had to do it again on either of these two trucks I would have kept my 2010 F150. If you try to tow anything with either the Colorado or Tacoma your mileage drops around 10 mpg each with only 3000 lb towing.

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, a ZR2 Colorado would better compare to the TRD PRO... We didn't do that because the TRD PRO costs $42,000+ (compared to the Colorado's $36k)... And we both know that wouldn't be fair! In your opinion, would you rather have two cars of the highest trim (even if the price is very different) or two cars being compared that have the same price (but not equivalent trims)?

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "The ZR2 also has less ground clearance, low hanging shock mounts under the rear axle which limits it's off road capability"
      Yet you think we should ignore that idiotic, low hanging transfer case on the TRD Pro?? The T-Case hangs BELOW the frame rails! And if the big jagged rock doesn't bust the T-case open, it'll definitely bust off the expensive low-hanging plastic actuator mounted on the back of it. Guys end of having to make big skid plates to protect the stuff Toyota was too lazy to protect:
      www.skidplates.com/Images/Products/Toyota/Tacoma/TA-0001_Install2_Wi-FromAngle.jpg
      i69.photobucket.com/albums/o179/maxama10/skids/IMG_7305.jpg
      i69.photobucket.com/albums/o179/maxama10/skids/IMG_7311.jpg
      I'd rather scrape a rear shock mount on a rock than crack my transfer case out in the middle of nowhere. Plus inboard mounting of the shocks allows to improve rear axle articulation for a given shock length and keeps the shocks and shock mounts away from road salt in the winter.
      "it has less payload, 1400 lbs less towing capacity,"
      Neither of which have nothing to do with off-road capability, eh? You're going to lose payload capacity when you select leafsprings for real offroading.
      "approach, break over and departure angles are all inferior than on the TRD PRO,"
      35/23.9/26
      vs
      30/23.5/23.5
      Hardly a decisive defeat, especially when you consider that when you 'breakover' a rock with a 2017 Trd Pro, you'll literally be breaking your t-case over the rock or crushing your exhaust pipe as you do it.
      As was discovered by journalists in the May 2017 ZR2 event, the field engineer's 2017 ZR2 utility truck had a 1" body lift which permitted the use of 33" tires, which would result in a 1 inch increase in ground clearance vs the 31" Duratracs.
      www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2017/05/first-drive-2017-chevy-colorado-zr2-cleverer-girl/
      "can't get a ZR2 with a manual transmission, how can it be better off road than a TRD PRO?"
      The TRD Pro's shitty Goodyear Wrangler AT's are a good start. GY Duratracs are by no means great, but they're 10 times better tan plain jane Wrangers.
      What does a manual transmission have to do with offroading capability?? There are plenty of instances where an automatic is superior to a manual. The torque converter gives the advantage of torque multiplication, which combined with a set of good gear ratios, makes for great crawling ability. The V6 ZR2's 8-speed offers a 4.62 1st gear that's excellent for offroad and allows for a numerically smaller rear axle ratio, allowing for a stronger R&P, as you don't need to make up for poor transmission gear ratios with a weak R&P ratio (cough Tacoma cough).
      And despite your rant, you ignore the fact that the TRD Pro didn't receive any sort of improvements to the front IFS, especially those weak stamped steel control arms, which is important if you really plan on taking advantage of those Fox Shocks. It's not uncommon for Tacomas that are really used off-road to have busted control arms or cracked welds.

      Interesting just how many companies offer either gussets for reinforcing the stock lower control arms or make heavy duty upgrades. Seems like something Toyota should have addressed before throwing Fox 2.5's on and promoting it as some kind of trophy truck.
      And of course while you tried to talk up the TRD Pro's "off-road superiority", you ignore its lack of a front locker and its famously weak stock rear ring & pinion. And worst of all, the TRD Pro's factory tires a complete shit.

    On the internet the biggest complaint on the Tacoma is the uncomfortble seating position. The seat is too low and forces the driver to sit with his legs too straight out.

    • @staffoffice
      @staffoffice 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree! This is because the Taco is built for off road and the odd seating position is because everything is shoved up higher to better ground clearance.

    Im sorry but if you buy a truck for offroading that you plan to keep stock, you should reevaluate your choice... TRD Pro is around 45k pre tax with dealer markups and most of the ZR2s ive seen go for 47k pretax. get the offroad version saved 12k and put it into the truck. you will be way more capable and still have money left over.

    Researching these for my next buy. I actually like the looks and interior of the Chevy, but I owned (bought new) a '98 Silverado that had some squeaks and rattles and only got 120 k before major repairs. I now own an '06 Tundra with 180 k that still runs perfect with minimum maintenance but does have rust issues. I no longer need 4x4 and don't plan on off-roading, but might be towing. In this case my heart is saying Chevy but my brain says Toyota.

    Toyota owns the mid sized truck market for a good reason it's because they can't be touched when it comes to quality. A Taco can run over 300k miles without any issues at all. I can't say that for any GM product and Ford...Christ, Ford can't keep an engine over 2 years without a major redesign. Toyota holds its value better than the Colorado by double digits.

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gazziza29 That's a pretty moronic statement considering the ZR2 offers Goodyear DuraTracs standard vs the TRD Pro's GY Wrangler AT's, the ZR2 offers a front locker and heavy duty cast iron front control arms whereas the Tacoma only offers an open front diff and weak stamped steel control arms. The TRD Pro can't be tuned while the mms 2015+ Colorado can be tuned based on whatever your want.

    • @Gazziza29
      @Gazziza29 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Uh do you see a TRD Pro or a ZR2 anywhere in this video? This is a comparison between the TRD Sport and Colorado Z71. Hello McFly???
      I love how ZR2 fans keep talking about their front locker. Please ask yourself, how many Colorado ZR2 drivers even know HOW and WHEN to use a front locker. It doesn't mean squat to have it if you don't know how to use it. Colorado users talk about the front locker, Tacoma users don't give to shits and actually go off-road. Did you goto Overland Expo West this year? If you did you'd notice that the 3rd gen Tacoma was the most popular and common vehicle there. Where was the Colorado? Nowhere to be seen.
      Again, doesn't mean shit if you have a front locker and talk about a front locker and never go off-road.

    • @mattr7118
      @mattr7118 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gazziza29 I think for either truck you'll be good for both off road and pavement running. That's kinda what they're made for. Good all around vehicles. Big enough for work, small enough for convenience. If I were to get in to serious enough off road to start having to lock the diffs and am worried about ground clearance and shit, I'll get an $800 95 jeep grand cherokee. Lol that being said I really have faith in the colorado's small diesel. All of Europe and Australia and South America are putting 4 cylinder diesels standard in all their trucks, and have for a long long time. The European cousin of the tacoma, the hilux, doesn't even have a gas engine offered with it! Lol! In my experience they just work so much better, on and off road. They can achieve astounding MPG even with added weight and a lift and big tires, and have that low end torque to just coast up rocks like they're nothing. I think that's why when cummins came out with their 2.8L crate engine to pair up with jeeps, they got put on backorder for 6 months after the first week! People in the states and Canada are tired of getting 12 MPG everywhere they go, and are tired of accepting it as just part of the fun. And I don't blame them at all. My brother has a colorado duramax that's been fully deleted and tuned and the thing gets 36mpg on the highway unloaded and 31 combined. 30mpg when it's all loaded up and ready for camping. I didn't believe him when he told me. But trying it out for myself made a believer out of me. It's astounding to me that we've yet to see these engines become popular in the American market, but when gas prices at their highest were still half the price of anywhere else, MPGs aren't really a factor. I'd love to see the tacoma come out with a small diesel for the tacoma at a fair price. If I were to choose between the Colorado and the tacoma in gas engines I'd definitely go with the tacoma. Although the zr2 has front and rear e lockers, toyota's reliability is really 2nd to none. I'd have no problem with either of these vehicles tho.

    • @Gazziza29
      @Gazziza29 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John Doe, couldn't agree with you more. Both trucks are very capable which is why I find it stupidly childish to to argue about paper specs. Oh the Taco doesn't have a front locker or oh the ZR2 has the DSSV suspension so it's so much better. It becomes an e-penis comparison. The number one factor when going off-roading is the driver themself, not the vehicle. Most vehicles in stock form are more capable than the driver. Whatever you drive just get out there!!
      I have a 16' 4Runner Trail that I have BFGs, OME 2" lift, skids and sliders that I've taken to Moab and never once did I say I geez I need that front locker for this one. It has a factory rear e-locker and a-trac and that's enough to get me out and over most things. Of course I don't go and try flip my truck going on Potato Salad Hill. I'll leave that one to the Jeepers and Buggys.
      I don't doubt that the Colorado (in any trim) is a capable vehicle. However there are three reasons I'd pick the Taco over it. 1) Reliability and reputation 2) The Taco has so much more 3rd party aftermarket parts and support 3) and lastly I'm a Toyota guy. I won't hide that one :)

    Tacoma is responsible for 80% of the mid sized truck market their only competitor Chevy doesn't come close. It's a nice attempt but no one will be able to touch the Tacoma any time soon

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zach Mansfield The Tacoma does not have 80% of the market. They probably did back when the only competition was the Frontier. Now that the Colorado is back, the Tacoma has lost 18% of its market share. www.tfltruck.com/2016/09/toyota-tacoma-is-losing-significant-market-share-in-a-growing-midsize-truck-segment/
      Also, the ZR2 completely outclassed the TRD Pro. Stronger suspension, better power trains, better shocks, and a front locker. The 2017 TRD Pro was a half-assed effort by Toyota considering the price for one went up by $7000.

      How about real people? Toyota's are not built like they were in the 80's and 90's.. come back to reality and realize the colorado is better. Pop music is the most popular music.. does this mean pop music is the best? Hell no.. Same with iphone. There are plenty of examples of mass amounts of people making the wrong decision.. politics.. religion.. anything and everything has a sheeple of people behind it that will love it no matter what. Toyota has become that, because of their older reliability and they've been milking it ever since even with it going down through the years.

      2016 Tacoma sold 191k, GM Colorado/Canyon sold 145k. So more like 55-60%. I like different things about each truck.
      Both are good trucks, the chevy is just as reliable....but what does a 35 year master technician know about this stuff. ;)

      Romarm LOL the 2016 Colorado has a better reliability rating than the 2016 Tacoma. It's looking like 2017 will be no different.
