    I first heard John, when he played at the Bierkeller in Barry Island, near Cardiff, in about 1969. We all had waist-length hair in those days and thought we were killer guitarists in the making. Then into the club walks this guy with short,neat hair, looking for all the world like a bank cashier. We were making our way to the door when he unpacked a Levin guitar and started playing. We sat down and listened, mouths open in amazement. Been digging him ever since.

    I don't know how that guy can sit there with such a straight face.
    I'm sitting in the pub, quietly, alone, chuckling to myself watching this with a great big grin on my face...

    I found Mr. John James in February 1973 with "Picture Rag" on drive "Morning bring the light". For forty years this great guitarist is one of my favorites. This is such a joy to see him play on these videos. Thank you ...

    Loved his playing since Sky in my pie with Pete Berryman ( 1972).
    Inspired me not to give up trying to play.
    Thanks John. More power to your fingers.

    Just gorgeous. I only ever saw John James play live once, but it was an unforgettable experience. He had wonderful dexterity and an unshakable sense of rhythm, but it was the warmth of his tone and his use of gentle vibrato that made his playing so expressive. This video is a lovely record of his playing. Inspirational.

    Saw him play way back in late 1960,s. Still remains the best Ragtime etc guitar player I have heard..I think it was at a folk club in Twickenham.

    For the sake of interest only (!!) compare John's technique to that of Rev Gary Davis: John sits with his guitar in 'classical' position looking at his fingers (as well all do) and compare the height of his fingers as he takes em off the fretboard .... now look at the Rev's. guitar slung way down beyond his left hip, eyes / head turned to the right and his fingers millimetres off the fretboard.

  • @fletchsrv

    The term 'virtuoso' is used a lot now, John James is one of the few who I would call that, Steve Howe and Martin Simpson a couple of others, seen them play live,, it's not only a guitar playing skill but a feeling too, those who know what I'm talking about will know what I mean.

    • @fletchsrv
      @fletchsrv 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The word I used was "feeling" mate - Your Doyle Dykes, Tommy E's and the like are superb players but I don't get anything from them - cold and lifeless playing. Note I do you the courtesy of not calling you a clown - real music lovers tend to respect other people's opinions .

    Great player, but didnt like his rendition of Silver Swan. Too slow and did not swing or rag to my liking. Props for trying. I can tell he studied the minor key part more than the major. Slow Drag was great though.
