  • According to Heidegger, modern man loses his being to "the They" in his "average" way of living. The They disburdens man of the existential project of defining himself authentically and freely, but this very disburdening is also an "entangling" into the public world of "averageness".

    The recipe example was particularly brilliant: I had not heard describing what it means to be “a They” that way before, and I really like the metaphor. Really brought the point home quickly, well done!

      @@telosbound I think that is a great advantage of your metaphoric schema, and indeed distinctions can be made between "The They-Self" and "The Other-Self," perhaps (with the second suggesting Communal Ontology)? I'll have to think on this languaging...but anyway I agree with you!

    It’s interesting that you used the English example of “one” as das man, given that in german “man” is used the same way “one” is in English. An example would be: “one is what one eats” = “man ist, was man isst”
