I am absolutely getting some of these, have intended to for a long time but keep forgetting. My current job is sanding down an old “ diner chair”. It is made of some laminated wood I think, maybe a hardwood plywood product for kind of oval back which was curved at the factory. They were old when we received then in 1987, bought from the diner which had upgraded I think. I hope I described them so you can picture them, they were covered in a gold vinyl. They have served as spare seating for all these years, being stored in the garage in between. So their polyurethane or shellac or whatever finish is mostly gone, but not completely gone. I have sanded and sanded and sanded. Normally I truly enjoy sanding, but particularly on the back legs which are curved, I just came here to find out which ones to buy. Thanks for the to the
    point video!

JKM you just blew my mind. 10 minutes ago I had no idea what a card scraper even was and between yourself and Stumpy Nubs you have just rocked my world. That is absolutely amazing. I feel like there will be somewhat less sanding in my life, and that crowning from using my RO sander drives me insane. What a great tool

I’ve made miniature scrapers out of hacksaw blades for small cove detail and round overs. They work great for cleaning up burn marks in cherry mostly. They work so well that it’s a mirror shine. No need to sand.

We were 'rationalising' all the unused for years bits and bobs tucked away in our kitchen cupboards today, and it occurred to me that old knife sharpening steels would make ideal burnishers. We had two that were worn almost smooth and no longer worked for their intended purpose (I sharpen our kitchen knives on DMT plates anyway), so I am going to smooth them with the finest angle grinder disk I have, and polish on the fully stitched buffing wheel I use to hone my blades. I think this is going to work well.

Growing up, my elderly neighbor showed me the "hillbilly" way of finishing a wood project. He broke a Mason jar and used some of he larger pieces of broken glass as a scraper. The contact area obviously varied and it took some practice to get usable results but it did work to smooth most woods to be ready for finish. No expensive sandpaper needed!

Word of advice to other woodworkers. Do not buy a bunch of scrapers so you don't have to sharpen as often. I have 7 rectangular scrapers. One gets dull, just grab another, right. WRONG! I end up with 7 dull scrapers. To be honest, in only have so many because I used to teach at Woodcraft, and had 6 students per class.

There is no company on the planet, mine definitely included, that gets it right 100% of the time.
