  • Thunderstorms hit the Sierra Nevada near Tehachapi hard on Oct 15th 2015 and caused flash flooding/mudslides. This is aerial footage captured the morning of the 17th, a day and a half later. Many cars and trucks were left stranded in the mud with many people forced to stay in their cars overnight. Highway 58 was shutdown while CalTrans frantically worked to clear the road, which took nearly a week, and they removed up to 7500 cubic yards of mud and debris equivalent to 23 full olympic-size swimming pools.. It is estimated that the road will be partially open on Monday. There were not any injuries or fatalities due to this mudslide on State Route 58. The storm that hit the Tehachapi area was a 1000 year event that triggered a flash flood that flowed down the canyons onto State Route 58. Approximately 1 ½ miles of roadway was covered in 5-6 feet of mud. A total of 78 passenger vehicles, 2 buses, 36 trucks, 1 RV & 1 travel trailer were stuck in the mud. Emergency personnel were able to safely remove all travelers and move them to emergency shelters.

    Edward Czajka, good job. What I would find interesting, (I know this is selfish) is to see a flight over the canyon to see where all the water originated. I must imagine the canyon is also showing signs of devastation as far as erosion and plant material just wiped out.
    But, like I said good job, and thanks.

      +Nick Altieri That's why I started the video from in one of the canyons, and why I went as high as I did. It was just a lot of rain in one area and it cascaded onto the highway.

    Excellent videography. Great choice of music. Try to edit more with the "music" and it's beat/pace. Would have made it MUCH more dramatic. Other than that, Damn fine job my friend"! - Demunseed (TH-cam)

      Hey thanx for responding. I was giving the solo smart drone a really hard look as well. Mainly because the camera and gimbal are upgradeable and/or replaceable additionally there are slots to add additional functionality in the future such as ballistic parachute and other sensors. The video quality on yours looks very good and stable. I do like the Phantom because it comes complete out of the box, and it has more range than the solo.

    • @EdwardCzajka
      @EdwardCzajka  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chevy Thunder Hey no problem. The Phantom 2 in my opinion is pretty upgradable, and the 3 is more out of the box, and not as upgradable. Checkout this antenna test I did for FPV: th-cam.com/video/_MqpQX_UICE/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Edward, like others, I would like to use your fabulous video for a post I am preparing for my ImaGeo blog at Discover magazine: blogs.discovermagazine.com/imageo/ My post is about the strange weather system that spawned the rains that led to the mudslide. I will of course credit you. Since you've given permission for other media outlets to use it, I'll assume that it's okay. But if you tell me that it's not, I will immediately find something else. Thank you so much. And great work!

      +Tom Yulsman I just saw your write up, that was a great piece. I was really curious on how the low made that loop, and if the El Nino waters played a roll in the Tehachapi Pass flooding. Great job.

    If your gonna build thru hills/mountains that are geologically made out of 100% mud (loess) or were even at one time tall sand dunes and not have jersey barriers on the outside edges, your gonna get mudslides covering up the roadway! Even my geology teacher once said a number of those mountains east of Bakersfield, CA along the hwy 58 route are actually ancient sand dunes similar to the sandhills region in Nebraska!

      +Edward Czajka - The music added made the film even more dramatic. We spent the night in Loves Gas Station's parking lot along the freeway, we were headed home, but the parking lot was like staying at Caesars Palace compared to those folks that were in the middle of the slide. Scary stuff. All agencies did a great job too. Thanks again.

    Obviously all these vehicles no longer have anyone in them. But where did everybody go? This looks like it's out in the middle of nowhere. Who picked them up? Where were they taken? How will they get where they were going since their vehicles are no longer driveable?

      +Pruett Nance I would disagree. That 5 foot barrier may have kept all of the water and mud mostly on one side of the highway, and trapped more cars but you missed something. If the barrier was not there, it would have taken both sides of the highway, and knocked all of the vehicles off the side of the road and down near the railroad tracks. Cars would have flipped as they were knocked off, and the headlines would have read "50+ People drown in their own cars due to flash flood on Highway 58". With the way it is currently built, there were not even any injuries with this event.

      Respectfully, there's no ideal roadway design for this region. Nature has too many more options than the engineers, who have practical constraints in mind.
