Oh, thank you so much for watching! And if someone should be thanked, it really is Tom Lehrer himself. He wrote all these immortal gems and did a great performance in 1967. Now the the songs are still on TH-cam thanks to him. Lehrer is a genius satirist, but also a kind man. Take it from me :-)
My parents had this album in mono. I heard it a lot when I was a kid. Originally the intro said "The first one was the week Malcolm X was killed, which shows you how meaningful this whole thing really is." and "Make Fun of the Handicapped week, which Frank Fontaine and Jerry Lewis are in charge of, as you know."
You forgot the best line from that recorded intro: "I'm sure we all agree that we ought to love one another, and I know there are people in the world who do not love their fellow human beings, and I HATE PEOPLE LIKE THAT!" the "paradox of tolerance" in a nutshell
I first heard this song performed by a group at my high school who acted out the lyrics in various ways. They put their palms together as they sang "the Hindus" and prostrated themselves at "hate the Moslems" and then simply held their noses for "everybody hates the Jews".
He just announced that his work is going to be released to the public domain. Hopefully that will help some young people become aware of and maybe even use it. Much of it is still quite relevant and with a bit of updating could be re-released.
Well, as a 23 year-old I've been very into his songs since 12, and even sang his songs on a few occasions(despite being a musician of a different sorts), as not only that I love his ingenious wit(which heavily inspired my own), but also how brutally real and honest his depictions are, perhaps only matched by very few in his lifetime(I can't of anyone except George Carlin, Bill Maher & Bo Burnham, and maybe John Cleese albeit he is a somewhat different breed, but all of them I greatly appreciate). But mind you, I'm an anomaly here, most of my peers aren't even aware of the existence of Tom Lehrer, and a number of them don't even know who George Carlin is!
National Brotherhood Week is my favourite Tom Lehrer song. Funny and sad and clever and angry and melancholy and cheeky and yet strangely hopeful all at once, absolutely nailing the most fundamental issue he ever tackled. Plus the tune is his catchiest.
You know his material was considered too rad for most of America in the 50s and 60s, which is why he spent so much time in Scandinavia, Australia, England, etc. He could sell out concerts overseas better than his home country, where he had a small niche following, but could never go mainstream here, where his material was considered just too risque. That's why you see subtitles on so many of his videos here.
They just didn't record his national performances, but he certainly performed a lot in the States. He says so in an interview, and at the beginning of his Copenhagen performance he says "...I've come to play these songs for you with which I've bored american audiences with for many years".

Apparently they heard about the album through friends in the Ivy League circuit (Tom having gone to Harvard). My Mom said that when she first heard the album, she told my Dad, "We have to get it!" I've always thought this was a good song, but I tend towards his "Bomb" songs -- like The MLF Lullaby, Who's Next, and We Will All Go Together When We Go. It gives me great comfort that Ukraine is doing so well in its fight against Russian aggression with minimal Western aid. That seems to make Putin's nuclear saber rattling much less credible. But that saber rattling still unsettles me a bit: I was born in 1957, when we and the Soviet Union were still testing nuclear weapons above ground.

@mike33650 He is Jewish. In fact, less than ten years ago he wrote "Chanukah in Santa Monica," a song that might not actually prove he's Jewish, (there are other ways to find that out, but I'll be circumspect) but that song did prove that after many years away from the biz, he could still write brilliant musical comedy.
My 7th grade social studies teacher played this song and others off one of his albums to the class in 1973 or so. We all laughed. Nobody took it too seriously.

Yeah, the improvement is subtle. The higher quality is a bit sharper overall. You can see more detail on the bricks and the wrinkles on his forehead. And it's easier to distinguish individual keys on the piano. But for our purposes the originals are fine.
fenomas, thanks for commenting. Well, yes, during 2009 (some of) the songs will be republished. In 2007 I was eager to remove all the wide shots, but thanks to Lehrer that's no longer necessary. Today I republished "Pollution", and...stay tuned :-)
Monty Python, Mad Magazine and Tom Lehr's album "That Was the Year That Was" profoundly influenced me throughout my life--anyway I can sing most of the songs off that album by heart. Me: age 61. "When you're old and gray" The wimmen all be clappin', but be like; "Mm..."
A lot of us can sing his songs by memory. 😊. There was a musical titled "Tomfoolery", showcasing his songs and most in the audience sang along.... enthusiastically, if not always on key. 😁
One is tempted to rename this song Christmas Day With The Family . Wishing my Norwegian friend and his family all the very best for Christmas and the year ahead, may it be the beginning of the best years of your life. And to Mr Lehrer I have a park bench reserved in your honour; I shall even supply the peanuts.
Brilliant. And that older style of piano playing is much harder than Rock style (except for Emerson, Lake & Palmer). And he never looks at his hands! A clever wordsmith who made total nihilism funny and entertaining.
I remember getting this album when it first came out. The intro is a little bit different, though. Tom mentions that the first National Brotherhood Week was held in 1965. And on the first day of that week, Malcolm X was assassinated. So, that gives you an idea of how effective it really is.
Is at the melody to disney's "bear necessities"? I don't remember, I haven't watched the jungle book in like 40 years and don't want to look it up on youtube because then I'd have to see a scene from some disney crud.

And thanks yet again for posting these!
As always, thanks again! Love that man....
Happy birthday, Mr. Lehrer.
My 7th grade social studies teacher played this song and others off one of his albums to the class in 1973 or so. We all laughed. Nobody took it too seriously.
while most kids my age were singing "mickey mouse club" songs, i was singing tom lehrer.
still singing loudly and proudly 50 years later.
The chorus is essentially a rewrite of the Sinatra version of "High Hopes" - it's even in the same key.
I listened to his records as a child and it made me the most cynical motherfucker in 3rd grade.
Ain't it great?!
msfyn, thank you so much! I wish you the best for Christmas too, and I wouldn't mind sitting on that bench and giving away a few peanuts myself :-)
Merry Christmas 🎄
The more things change, the more they stay the same
So fitting now
April 2009 - 6funswede TH-cam log. Errors July 2007-April 2009. "Pollution": Sound deteriorated. "When You Are Old And Gray": Video stuttering. "Send the Marines": Video stuttering. This is ALL TH-cam errors, have written to them, but I don't expect any answers. Viewers: PLEASE use the annotation boxes with links in the videos.
Yeah, the improvement is subtle. The higher quality is a bit sharper overall. You can see more detail on the bricks and the wrinkles on his forehead. And it's easier to distinguish individual keys on the piano. But for our purposes the originals are fine.
true genius,//never out of DATE.///////
fenomas, thanks for commenting.
Seriously, three of the greatest influences you could have had. Mad Magazine was utterly brilliant in the 60s and 70s.
A lot of us can sing his songs by memory. 😊. There was a musical titled "Tomfoolery", showcasing his songs and most in the audience sang along.... enthusiastically, if not always on key. 😁
these vids are just great. Love them :)
Thank you!! It made my day.
Brilliant.
Yes, I remembered that intro that way also. Bittersweet, because Malcolm X was important to our history.
Is at the melody to disney's "bear necessities"? I don't remember, I haven't watched the jungle book in like 40 years and don't want to look it up on youtube because then I'd have to see a scene from some disney crud.
