What's up you guys! Meet my buddy Hugh, who's one of my absolute favorite people to talk country music with. Today, we are going over some of YOUR hottest takes. We cover Florida Georgia Line (00:56), Texas country music (2:46), Jon Pardi (5:26), Riley Green (7:07), Chris Young (9:31), Sturgill Simpson (9:39), Luke Combs (11:34), and Miranda Lambert (13:35). I think you're gonna like this one, so if you do, hit like on the video! And let me know if we should make more in the future. (In less noisy locations, of course.)

Grady Smith got take: Miranda Lambert is the farthest thing from a legend. She sucks at country music, and came out with some of the worst songs of the decade, especially Liittle Red Wagon.
Tegan Marie is the future of women in country music.

Texas country (as a whole) is more "country" than most anything being put out in the last decade. But, it isn't the only country. There have been a few from Nashville. And, I don't agree the Appalachian country artists are "more" country than Texas artists unless you are going back to the 20's and 30's. Appalachian is more Americana/folk + country. Texas country is more 50's - 90's country - western. Of course, I'm more a fan of the country western vibe and less a fan of Americana/folk stuff. It all has a place in country music radio as they both sing and actually play REAL instruments - just leave the pop/hip hop/bro country/snap tracks/electronic loop/can't hire an actual human band to play the music stuff to its own genre and call it pseudo country!

Cody Johnson is the future. His guitar talent alone sets him apart from 99% of the manufactured country genre. Add his vocals and background... dude is solid gold. A vetera entertainer. Puts on a better show than anyone out there.

Texas Country has become such a diverse genre it’s hard to speak of it as a whole. There’s a huge difference between Koe Wetzel and say Flatland Cavalry and Randy Rogers. There are definitely plenty in Texas/OK Country who are as traditional as “Appalachian Country”. It’s just that the Appalachian sub-genre is smaller and less diverse. That being said, most Texas dancehalls I’ve been will play Tyler Childers every night. Good country music can come from anywhere.

Grady, this is one of your best episodes yet. I play country music, I love country music, it's all I listen to and now that me and my buddies all have families and are much more busy we don't get together as much so we don't get to talk about music and who we like and who we don't , do. Who's got a great song out at the time etc. So being able to listen to watch your channel and hear your take is almost as good as my buddies and I talking about it. Alex Thomas you really think Houston is better than Dallas. LMAO. Houston is so dirty and ghetto, DFW is much cleaner. The only thing Houston does better than Dallas is the food, but other than that Houston is ugly, smelly, disorganized, and just a terrible city in general. Houston also has a massive crime rate and homeless population. Tents are set up anywhere and everywhere. Drugs run rampant through Houston too. Terrible place to raise a family.

Honestly, Keeper of the Flame by Miranda Lambert is insanely well written, and it goes to show where her head is in terms of how the genre is changing so drastically. She is one of my favorite artists, so I am trying to present this as unbiased as possible: when you compare Miranda to other women in country at this point in time, she is the most true to her roots, aside from a few. Up until Wildcard, which is unreleased (but I suspect it will be more mainstream), she has never conformed in an effort to be played on the radio. Pistol Annie’s is up there with that, and I believe The Highwomen will be a more popular version of the Annie’s just because of their agenda and lyrical content. Nobody will ever be as legendary as Dolly Parton or Loretta Lynn, just like nobody will ever be as legendary as George Jones or Johnny Cash. It’s what we’re stuck with in this weak and feeble moment of country music.

I remember hearing Old Crow Medicine Show's "Wagon Wheel" and thinking alright Appalachia! Texans loved that song, especially to dance to, and I frequently referred to as best song to come recently from East of the Mississippi. Then that guy from Hootie and the Blowfish went and rui- I mean covered it, and now that's the only version I ever hear..... Texas Country is the best country, but if there's something I should see from Appalachia, let's do some regional episodes highlighting what they gots to offer.

I think the thing with bro country is that it seems so fake. You know they aren't actually going to a bonfire on Friday night, they've got tickets to sit courtside at an NBA game or something. Luke Combs is so believable as a down-home country boy that he just isn't bro country. He would go do an afternoon concert at the fairgrounds then head out mudding. He's too real to come across as a bro.

@@MrsRen Yes, absolutely! Refrigerator. Every country artist has fun party songs and some genuine attitude. To call if a bro country artist is like calling a lot of other artists one too

More hot takes! I love hearing about the semantics of bro country. 🤣 And if anyone could be a legend it's Kacey Musgraves, that girl has my heart.

Very good discussion. I agree with almost all of your guys conclusions. I do think Miranda will go down as a legend though...maybe for not all the right reasons! Ha! Her music is pretty great. I think you should do a breakdown of major artists from maybe the last say three decades. Some could over lap, depending on influence. I know top tens are over done at times, but I believe your audience would enjoy it. Thanks again for the great content!

Texas Country is the natural progression of Western/Swing....Appalacian is the natural progression of Bluegrass....it's all on your taste. I'm more Western/Swing personally

Don’t clump Turnpike in with Cody Johnson and Aaron Watson. There’s a big difference between Texas country and the highly superior Oklahoma Red Dirt scene.
