I recommend your first Knowledge point goes to Run then Smooth Talk. That will open up a trait afterword that gives anyone added to the party 1 extra attribute point. Pair that with Career Plans and you essentially get at least 4 levels worth of attribute points on anyone that joins your party. In the beginning you will be getting knowledge points very quickly so just hold off leveling companions up until you unlock those first few things in the compendium. I always push willpower to max (15) first because that causes you to gain Galvanize very quickly in each fight, effectively doubling every companion in the party's damage. Also when you are at the stage of switching professions due to not having enough companions for every profession, try to at least hit the next level of expertise in each profession before switching i.e. Mining from Novice to Apprentice. when you switch you lose progress to the next level of expertise but keep the current level of expertise. For example switching an Apprentice Mining to Novice Woodcutting doesn't reset your Mining back to Novice. You maintain Apprentice Mining.
