Billy Thorpe did The best versions of Be bop Lula and C.C.Rider hands down , Billy rocked man , hard to match a phenomenal guitar player with a loud voice like he had , dearly missed , totally legendary. First time I’ve hear him doing CC Rider it blew my brains so much that I couldn’t stop listening to it for months ....
Peter Evans continues: The young cameraman on stage with the Ampex shoulder held camera is "Lucky Phil" Lambert of "Hey Hey it's Saturday" fame. Direction was by Peter Faiman and sound by Colin Steavenson, lighting by myself.
What a night that was. Couldnt see the bands I was so far back. Remember the La De Das came on and played All along the watchtower, and it sounded like hendrix was on stage
I saw him a couple of times at Sunbury. Sensational. Will never forget how resurrected J O'K's music life, by doing one of his songs.Johnny was at Sunbury the following year. A highlight of my life.
Glad to see that other people from that show and era are still breathing. Went to a few concerts at The Bowl and Thorpie was always the stand-out act. Sadly, he's gone but his voice and music remain.
Was never a bad gig I saw many allways praised with acknowledgement to the writer of any song he covered Harry Carmichael Gene vincent so much to his talent going down with Rose Tattoo play it loud and often
Summer time in Melbourne.... days gone by. Sunbury festivals, Moomba concerts ,the Sydney myer music bowl, 3xy er 3ak("where no wrinkles fly") the local pub , first time I saw Billy ,god dam he was loud and the last time I saw him ,even louder. loved this guy, Rest Peacefully Billy
NOT at Myer Music Bowl - watch searchlight on the hill behind the stage 0:15" to 0:19" and the Sunbury '73 banner above the stage lit up in a flash of light 0:26"-0:27" seconds in. This clip is from the Sunbury Festival (Australia Day weekend) 1973.
Thorpie has the Peter Green pickup mod on his Les Paul done, by the looks of the turned around neck pickup. Way before that little secret of Green's became widely known.
Aztecs were so loud back then. Killed the fish at Bondi Life Saving Club? I remember as a 14yo guitarist watching Leo De Castro and Friends up close at the local dance and was mesmerised by the big Strauss amp and Cry Baby wah wah. "Santa" bought me a Cry Baby that Christmas. Still can't imagine my Dad shopping for it haha. Life was so easy then, great times.
According to Peter Evans who did the lighting for this show: Not the Music Bowl, it's Sunbury 1973 from GTV9's coverage of that year (look at the opening shots, and note the Optronics amplifiers in the backline). This was not included in the one hour special which was compiled later on and the master tapes recorded over, so I'm wondering where the footage came from.
@twoducks amazing album. just amazing, easily stands up to the greatest live albums like the Allman Brothers at the Filmore and MC5 Kick out the James.
It's now 2022 and I'm now 64, but Aztec Energy still rocks my soul.
This takes me back to the old days at "The Whitehorse". Great times, great music, great bloke.

now this is music
Billy Thorpe sang R&R from about 12 years old to around 55 year old; then died of a heart attack. He was the greatest.

Classic Thorpie...
I think this may be at Sunbury Jan. 1973
Voice of a god!!!
Oh no my earphones are crackling... bastard!
rock'n'roll forever
This isn'tt the Myer Music Bowl. That was a free Easter daytime concert, I was there.
Blimey!
Read his "Sex and Thugs and Rock 'n' Roll" its a quite well written and a good read... quite a sensitive guy...
Surely this is the 1972 concert...
Yeah! That's Sunbury, still the best though!!!!
This is from Sunbury, not the bowl
Sunbury...??..🤔
this looks like sunbury.
Isn't wonderful?
Farewell - it's a military word
