Wintersun is a Finnish melodic deathmetal band. They originally formed in 2003 as the side project of Jari Mäenpää (songwriter, singer, guitar player). Their drummer is Kai Hahto, who also drums for Nightwish. Teemu Mäntysaari is the second guitar player and Jukka Koskinen plays bass. Jukka will also be playing bass during Nightwish's upcoming world tour. He's stepping in for Marko, who retired from Nightwish last January. So far, Wintersun has made 3 studio albums. I may have another nice recommendation for you. Have you heard anything from Sabaton yet? They are a Swedish heavy metal band and they mostly sing about heroism in war. There is a Nightwish link here too. Sabaton's drummer, Hannes Van Dahl, is married to Nightwish's Floor Jansen... Their latest single is really good. It's called 'Christmas Truce', about the series of unofficial ceasefires around Christmas 1914 during World War One. This song got one of these low key solos that you might miss if you blink because the song is so overwhelming , but it's one of my favorites. If drums are your thing, then you should do "Sons of Winter and Stars" from the same studio session as this one. It's next level stuff.
FYI: The drummer (Kai Hahto) of Wintersun is also the drummer for Nightwish since 2014. Nightwish's first drummer Jukka Nivalainen had to stop as a drummer for the band because he had severe insomnia issues. He is still with Nightwish though. Wintersun's bassplayer, Jukka Koskinen is the (temporary?) replacement for Marco Hietala in Nightwish. Marco (sort of) left the band earlier this year, explaining in a statement that he hadn't "been able to feel validated by this life for a quite a few years now". Many Nightwisher hope Marco will return in the near future.
Jari's distinctive voice is undoubtedly effected by the fact that he had half of one lung removed after he contracted TB whilst doing his National Service
Jari did all those instrumental backing tracks himself in his apartment, in fact, the album took extra years to make because at the time, home computers weren't powerful enough to handle the number fo tracks he had for each song, he had hundreds of tracks per song just to make all the orchestration.
Love this! It is a true masterpiece! Wintersun has one of the most beautiful, saddest songs called "Loneliness (Winter)" (official lyric video) and one of the most terrifying songs that will freeze blood in your veins called "Eternal Darkness (Autumn"). Both these masterpieces are on their Forest Seasons album where they contrast one another since first you hear the terrifying Autumn and then the soothing Winter. Highly recommend trying them out, at least "Loneliness".
I like their sound! The reason I follow certain reaction-channels are mostly twofold a) learn something or get different perspectives about music I like from professional musicians. b) discover new music myself! These kinds of bands are not easy to discover without recommendation.

That was one of the reasons why it took so long for Jari to finish the album cause back then there were no pc with enough CPU to handle it. Maybe next "Sons of Winter and Stars" from the same session.
Excuse me, i forgot to mention Wintersun , "Time", in your Ayreon cd, reaction, this is an amazing performance, Me listening after 10 maybe 20 seconds of another song from them, it was not for me but after this one (GIVEN THEM ANOTHER TRY) WOW WOW, i cried. This will be my favourite until.......( you probably can guess i am of age) how ever Nightwish will be my favourite , drummer Kai is performing with Nightwish as jukka the bassplayer
That's awesome, I find it important to give a band a chance by listening to a few songs before deciding if you like them or not. Some of the best music takes time to understand and appreciate.

They have a mixture of folk/death/progmetal and their inspiration comes from Finnish epic Kalevala. Their biggest hit from their latest albums I think was the Bee. But there is no bad song from them. They released this year a bonus song single from the same album and I think it is one of the better songs there, Brother and Sister.

Its all Jari (Lead singer, guitarist) he composes all the songs including backing tracks, all instruments besides the drums, plays them for album recording (besides the drums), mixing and mastering..all by Jari!! ;)

Cranking it through a Peachtree Audio Nova 125/Wharfedales and an SVS sub. \m/ BOTH of the guitarists in this video are phenomenal, though Jari has since given up playing guitar live to concentrate on vocals these days, so Teemu is doing most of the lead work. They added another guitarist name Asim to bring the 2nd guitar parts. And yeah...he's awesome too. The drummer is pretty good too :). LOTS of awesome in this band lol.
