    Maybe make another waterfall enclosure for this T. Try splitting the wet and dry areas with thin stone slabs or tile. This will stop the water from seeping over the barrier. Also do some more intense waterproofing. AntsCanada had a similar problem with a leaky water feature in one of his bioactive enclosures and managed to fix the problem with rocks and a lot of sealant. Hope you can give the enclosure another go!

    Interesting when you mentioned the problem with the post office. My family used to keep bees when I was a kid. We ordered some colonies by mail which didn't please our carrier. He delivered them but after that we had to go over to the post office to pick up any further colonies. The driver refused to carry anymore packages of live bees. One day someone mailed a letter to us but he didn't know our name of address so he simply addressed the letter to. "Bee People". The post office people knew exactly where to deliver the letter.
    Maybe the next time when you order a spider by mail have the sender note on the package, "Highly venomous live tarantula" so the post office people will learn who you are. And to really have some fun pretend to check the package before taking it and suddenly proclaim, "Oh no it got out!! Nobody move until I recapture it".

    Your channel is really turning it up, thank you. Even though i'm not a biologyst nor an entomologyst, i've been really interested in zoology since i was 4 years old. Been on serious diet of books and encyclopedias. Now i'm 35, i'm into business management and music production, and i GOTTA say and thank to those sciences as i really like and enjoy taxonomy as complicated and exciting as it is. It helped/ helps me a lot to understand and clasify things around on my stuff and daily basis activities, and it's all about those early attachments. Your channel is so full of it, and i gotta confess i stopped watching other youtube channels because of yours 😅 'Feeding the Devil' stated it all around June 2018. Thank you, keep at it!

    No dont do it
    You just need a barrier remove the substrate from the background so its above the water level and paint the lower portion of the background and it will stop the capillary action it's an easy fix

    • @DunkinBiscuits
      @DunkinBiscuits 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bigtweek6819 sounds fairly straightforward to me, he is basically saying the water is climbing up the substrate therefore remove all the lower substrate from the back wall surface etc and paint a protective coating (waterproof) to just above the water level and then the water cannot escape. Basically leave the bottom section of the wall free from substrate.

    @The Dark Den, If you ever revisit the project of making an enclosure for this type of tarantula. You might want to try adding a drainage layer, but in the form of 'light diffuser/Egg Crate' on top of the clay balls. Then add a drainage hole at the side, so you can empty the water out. The tarantula shouldn't be strong enough to bite through that type of material.
    A longer enclosure, like an aquarium would probably be ideal. Basically, add your baffle like you did on your current set-up. Then add a second baffle that is a bit taller further to the right. Then add the drainage layer in between these two baffles. So the water that siphon out , simply can be drained from between the two baffles while the tarantula burrow is kept in the last baffle, where you have a single layer of clayballs and an egg crate/light diffuser on top. Add your mesh on the underside of the egg crate, so the tarantula have a hard time destroying it. To keep the drainage layer clear of debris.
    Plant the region between the first and second baffle heavily with plants that spread their roots out. Add a light diffuser/Egg crate an inch below the soil, To prevent the tarantula from trying to burrow there. Then simply add the water to the farthest left. Try add rocks on the baffle up against hte background, so you foam a rock into place. That way, you can avoid having that dirt seam that seemed to wick the water. Then make a rocky slope into the water. Then add some java moss and some pest snails to clear the algae.

    I had the same problem with some of my first crab enclosures. Now I've gone over to a kind of flooded landpart with a big drainage layer. And most of the Geosesarma or Metasesarma like that kind of soaked substrat to dig there burrows.
    And I would probably add something more structure for the crabs on the land part.

    Maybe you could make a solid barrier by lining the lip with rocks and silicone them around so that the water has a better barrier. Or, you can make a drainage layer, but use a cut piece of plexiglass with drilled holes in it for the water the drain through. I had a similar problem with my Fire Bellies paludarium, and making a barrier with rocks greatly reduced the problem for me.
    Or just get the crabs because I love those too!!!
    Whatever you do, it was still a really cool enclosure

    Petko, you can also use such type of enclosure for Ancylometes species. They are fishing spiders that actually dive, swim and hunt underwater for small fish (hence the name), frogs or bugs. Extremely interesting for observation. These spiders should be easily available, because of their popularity. Also they aren't too expensive.

    Simple solution on next build attempt, line the base with some strong plastic tarp that will act as a 'container' vs relying on silicone joins that can deteoriate with time. Look up in youtube on how to build manmade ponds in gardens to understand it better.
    Hope you will attempt to build a waterfall enclosure again and make it successful. Then maybe attempt to create rain too. Antscanada did just that recently.

    Dude please don't give up on making a water enclosure for your T I know it will work it's just trail and error, you saw that she is fine with water so this is good. Maybe make the next enclosure a little deeper so you can add drainage layer and a way to to pull the water from it back into the waterside, also it might be worth making the waterfall more to one side so less likely chance of it climbing into the dry side. Keep up the good work, I do love your videos. I have about 2 weeks left in dubai and then about a month after I return to the UK I will be sending you a package.

    Finally vampire crabs ;D I still remember a long time ago I asked in an E-Mail if you will keep them someday. The tank looks great for them already. Should probably add a stick/bark for easier time climbing up from the water, though they will not have a hard time how it is now. You should definitely try creating a "cave" in the background, they do definitely use those hiding spots and it will prevent cannibalism between aggressive males. Maybe a tunnel from water part to land part, that would be awesome. They also like to burrow, but not deep, so you can have a drainage layer without them digging it up.

    I feel for your frustration. I am working on an enclosure for a tiny jumping spider I saved from a bigger spider's web. It's become a bit excessive. If I get a Regal Jumping Spider like I want to, it would be perfect for an adult. It's a 48 oz. Miracle Whip container, cleaned and de-labeled. I'll have a video to edit when I finish the darn thing. Mesh for air and hot glue..... grrrr argh. Over thinking..... KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid. I'll post the link to the video here. I love all the info you have to offer. Pretty great stuff. I promise, if I send you anything from the USA, I'll keep it under $20 USD, and put Candy on the label so you'll know what's in it.

  • @dhgodzilla1
    @dhgodzilla1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I knew that was going to be the end result lol. You should have used a high quality clear aquarium silicone to glue some plexiglass in place as a foundation for the waterfall & the pool of water completely isolated from the substrate, than you could have glued some rocks to one side of it or something. I have had many Lizards over the years & I used to like to buy Waterfalls with pumps in them for running water, but they ALWAYS leaked. So I got into the habit of modifying them as soon as I brought them home even if they were brand new. I would use Clear Aquarium Silicone to put a 2-3 cm or half inch Bead around the Rim of the Water Area & Down Along the Flow Path of the Waterfall. That way the water was contained. I had to do this EVERY time I had a Pump with Water in a Terrarium.

    • @dhgodzilla1
      @dhgodzilla1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any Areas connected to the Waterfall without a Rim of Silicone to stop it will give the Water a path to Soak up into the Substrate. Put a Bead all the way down & across the top.

    Now, I don't want to look careless, but I would really like to see you make another enclosure with water in it for this female. It doesn't have to contain a waterfall, but just some water in it, a little filtrated pond, in order to see its mysterious fish hunting behaviours. A couple of feeder fish in the enclosure, and it would be quite interesting to watch what happens. It might look risky, however, since the tarantula obviously doesn't easily drown, as it can be seen in this video, it wouldn't be a problem if you make the enclosure more carefully and without the problems of this one. You know, well siliconed and e.t.c...

    You have to break the capillary action. This can be done a few ways. 1) cut a small trench going from the devider all the way to the top and fill it with black silicone so the water can't travel past it. 2) cut into the foam and place a strip of plastic/glass going from the divider all thr way up to the top. You have to have some sort of break between the wet side and the dry side on the back wall or the water will be sucked to the dry side through capillary action every time. And you MUST (not shouting) have a break in the back wall between both the waterfall side and the dry side. Option 1 is the easiest to do and the least obvious one. Jist remember and natural fibers that touch both sides will pull water to the dry side. I had a similar problem with my first attempt at a paladarium 15 years or so ago. And I tried option one but didn't like the look of plastic running through the middle of my wall. I then filled the gap with black silicone and it looked a lot better and worked great.

    Love your video's Petko❤
    I can see in the video that the background is wet 15 maybe 20cm up, meaning that eighter the expanding-foam or the substrate has to high a capillary value.
    You could fix it by using only (semi)smooth rocks and silicone glue.
    Another solution could be to leave the wet substrate as is, and install an extra pump in the back pf the substrate to pump the water back to the pond.
    I hope this helps.
    Also thanks to your videos my girlfriend can handle spiders allot better now so keep up the good work😀 ❤

    Ants Canada did a setup like this for his ants. You should watch his video on making it and maybe get some ideas to possibly try again in the future.

    Hi Petko, when making this enclosure add a piece of plexiglass to make a divide/separate the background that way the water will not be able to travel through to th substrate

    I think the capillarity effect is caused by the dirt that you put on the foam. If you cut the dirt and leave the naked foam it should stop, because the dirt absorbs water and due to capillarity it goes on the other side.

    You can fix this easily by adding a piece of acrylic through the backing next to where its creeping up. You should be good if you cover it with rocks instead of substrate and mix brown paint and clear acrylic to make it look natural

    I've heard some arboreal tarantula species would jump out of trees and into streams or rivers to avoid getting caught by predators. They would just float down until they reach safety.

    Sometimes it takes a few tries to get things right, it's all a learning experience!

    Hey big man can’t you use pond liners to stop the water by taking it up the water fall and make the substrate lower than the liner to stop it climbing up. Keep up the good work.

    You should talk to @Mark's Tarantulas. He makes super enclosures if you haven't seen vids of him already. Both him and yourself are my two fave spider guys, for your enclosures and ultimate care of your spider broods. But yeah he has done an awesome enclosure for his fishing spider.... as well as many others of course!
