Hey!! I'm living in NYC and in a similar situation where my company announced that we'll be WFH for the rest of 2020 AND I'm living at home with my lease up next month. I would recommend not renewing your lease right now and waiting to see what happens. It allows you to save money and feel a lot less pressure to stay in one place during a time of suuuch uncertainty. It definitely is tough on roommates but I'm sure they'll understand considering how unprecedented the circumstances are - also, you can always help them look for someone to fill the spot!

I would just move back in with my parents. Save that mula for your future condo!

Hey Katherine - long-time watcher, first-time commenter, so first and foremost, hello!
I paused the video as soon as you finished talking about your rent conundrum because I'm going through the exact same thing (as seems to be the case for a lot of your viewers - low-key think we should start a Slack channel to discuss :P), and figured I'd share some of my existential rumblings.
For context, I'm also 24, recently moved into my own apartment in the city (Toronto) but am currently living with my parents in the suburbs, and work at one of the large tech companies that said we'd not only be working remotely through 2020, but FOREVER. Prior to the announcement, I had no idea what to do about my lease expiring in August. However, after getting the confirmation that we'd essentially never be returning to the office, I realized my tiny condo (with a roommate) wasn't going to cut it as a permanent office space, so I've decided to end my lease. Still figuring out what's going to come after, but I'm thinking I'll probably ride out the rest of the year at home with my parents (save some money), and use 2021 to spend some time living in and working out of cities I've always been curious about - like Vancouver. Not putting too much pressure on myself to figure out what happens after that because having my mental model of office = anchor around which you center your life snapped in half was kind of a lot, but with each passing day, I feel a little more hopeful and a little less anxious!

Katherine I know it may not feel the best on a moral or friendship level, but $1500 is a lot of money. I would not renew the lease and save the potential 5 months of rent (7500) which could in the future pay for moving fees or furniture for your condo. It's not personal and I'm sure if you make a conscious effort to find another Tennant there should be no bad blood. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this video and thought it was a good mix of different vlog styles! I personally like the longer clips of you talking since it feels more podcast-like and shows more of your personality. Keep up the great work, Katherine! It’s definitely an interesting time and we’re all doing our best to cope and retain a sense of normalcy!

Two things- I forgot to ask when you had a q&a open, but what has it been like going from a role that required a lot of travel to now sticking to WFH, both in how it’s affected you personally and it’s impact on how you do your job? Second, thank you SO much for your short anecdote on the feeling of seeing fitness on social media because I’ve never heard anyone say it out loud and I’ve always felt it so thank you x100 for the validation that we’re doing the best we personally can 💕💕

I think that not paying this rent will help you further your goal of purchasing a place in the long run. Also there’s no guarantee that this will end quickly. You can always get another apartment, take day trips into the city, or even get an Airbnb for a week. I actually had a similar issue and found someone to take over my apartment pretty quickly. You can also sublease out for the rest of the year and see how this plays out. Just my opinion, if it’s important to you to live your best sf life before moving to seattle, then do what feels right.

it made me kind of upset when you were saying you felt sad for no reason and had no right to feel that way, YOU DO. You’re very lucky and blessed but that doesn’t make your emotions and mental health less important than another person. Take care of yourself and feel what you need to feel 💛 Loved the vlog

Hey Katherine, I'm in a similar situation as you. I work as a software engineer for oil & gas so there's uncertainty in our job stability bc of the pandemic and market. A little context: I'm 23 and I graduated summer 2019 with a B.S. in computer science and started working post-grad. I live w/ 1 roommate and my apartment lease ends in August 2020. My parents actually live in the same city, just 40 minutes away. I've been weighing the pros and cons and these are the reasons why I moved closer to the city 1) my apartment is only a 7 minute drive to my office, 2) I get to live closer to downtown so me and my friends could more conveniently go out on the weekends, and 3) I get to say that I'm independent and living the big girl life. Also I like having the privacy of living by myself!
After some thought.. I think I'm going to end my lease in August and move back with my parents. I talked it out w my roomie and she understands. It's the financially smart decision (will be saving $1000/month) and for now we are WFH but even if my work requires us to go back to the office I don't mind commuting 40 mins everyday or I'll try to negotiate a hybrid wfh schedule. Or if I really hate the commute and not having privacy then I'll try to find a new place, but only if I feel secure with my job. On the chance that I do get laid off, I'd feel safer with my decision bc then I won't have that financial strain of having to pay for rent or breaking my lease. It's a really tough time and I'd rather make a safe decision than be financially stressed in the future. Also I have similar goals and want to save up to buy a townhouse or move to work for a tech company in Seattle/SF in the upcoming years so this will help with my savings!
By the way I've been watching your videos since I was a senior in high school (2015) and your college videos helped me out a lot when I transitioned into college. Thank you for that, you're truly my inspiration and I've always looked up to you! I was so busy in college so I didn't keep up with my subscriptions but it's so awesome to come back and see how much you've grown and seeing you thrive in the professional world! I'm so proud of you and so happy you're still making videos. It makes me feel less alone knowing that you're juggling the same decisions as me. Love you Katherine and good luck!!

as someone who lived with my parents in a further out part of nyc, who now lives in the middle of the city: i love it so much more, and i'd be so sad if i left. i love just being out-- the markets, the restaurants, the parks (yes, they've all been lovely even in what was the corona epicenter of the world). i don't love quiet places and not being able to walk to everything i need. do you feel similarly? if not, and you find yourself happy elsewhere, then consider staying put and ending your lease. the savings will almost certainly help you get to your goals faster.

I’m in the same situation, I’m home with my parents for the foreseeable future while paying for an empty apartment. My main hesitation with not resigning is that if you do think you’ll be returning to SF, you would have to go through that process again of finding roommates and finding a place to live that’s affordable and that you’re comfortable with. It took me a few months to find my apartment and I’m really happy there so if in a year from now I tried to move back and I was left with a “downgrade” if you will, I’d be frustrated with myself for giving up the space I had! Granted that’s also if you’re fortunate enough to be in a position to still afford the apartment, I understand that that’s not the case for many people right now unfortunately

My favorite work from home meals is: caramelize some onions with pepper strips cut in half (add in at the last minute to retain a little crunch), add to a bed of steamed kale, and sprinkle sunflower seeds on top. I run my Spotify the same way! It would be really cool if you posted the link to the workout in the link area. Also, Normal People is FANTASTIC! I don't know how competitive the SF housing market is. If you think you can find a similar place, I would suggest dropping that room in SF since the cost is so high. Absolutely talk to your roommates though.

I just found out my friend lost her mother this morning. Given these circumstances I would stay with my parents an extended time if I had the chance & spend as much time with them cherishing every moment. Life can be cut short I realize & sometimes you'll miss out on memorable moments on being with those you love when they're gone.

I am currently going to school in San Francisco so I can relate to having roommates and shared rent but personally for me the decision not to renew our lease which is also up at the end of July should be solely based on what is best for you. There will be people who still want to move to SF during the pandemic, we've been able to find one subleaser to join us but she and one other girl are the only people living in the house right now. Having to split amenities is a financial burden I don't see as worthwhile since school will be distanced learning in the fall. Do whatever works for you but spending 1500 on rent is not the best idea SF is being very precautions but going out won't be the same for a while. Love the video and stay positive!

I'm in the same boat as you! We ultimately decided to end our lease in August (my BF and I pay $4,400/month for our spot in Redwood City *cry*), and we'll be moving into my mom's place in San Diego until Jan when our office opens back up again! I think you already know what you want to do, even if it's a little complicated with your roomies, but I'm sure they'll understand. Also, rent in SF/the Bay is dropping so much, so you may all be able to find a cheaper place when you return! Good luck!!! :)

My coworker a few years back had her SF apartment but spent all her time at her boyfriend's. She called keeping the place "the world's most expensive closet." Hiii, also in a similar(ish) situation, my company announced WFH for the rest of the year and I'm currently an intern based in Chicago. My contract is through August with the hope they are hiring by then but who knows. Instead of biting through my savings paying rent for the summer, I'm becoming a 'digital nomad' of sorts and staying with various family members around the country. Terrifying? 100 percent. Do I crave stability? SO MUCH. But hoping the journey betters me? Who knows? At least I'll save on rent? (also shameless plug I will be vlogging the whole thing)

I don't think you should renew your lease...I'm in a similar situation. I was scheduled to move this fall to start a new job and was in the midst of an apartment hunt when the company announced WFH for the rest of the year. As much as it would have been nice to move to a new city it isn't worth it to spend the money and stay cooped up in an apartment.

Check out Animal PAK Joint Support - I take it for high impact exercises and it's one of those supplements I swear by. Fish Oil is great too for inflammation.

I’m from SF Bay Area too! I think you should renew, and then you can always find a subletter if things don’t change in SF.

Actually a work force should consist of good ,effective and hard working ppl, its not necessarily that women work better or men. Both should work together for better outcomes

I would move back in with your parents, save as much as you can which can help you save more for the condo! Take the opportunity to build your financial savings! :)
