Team record matters but it shouldn't. Top 5 D with Vic on the floor, bottom 5 without him. That's says enough for me for an individual award.
Yeah, but the team still bottom of the barrel. Is it so hard to understand; DPOY, MVP and other accolades, should be awarded to players whose impact is reflected in WINNING.
Individual stats with no results are empty stats.

This all started on his first game!! Since then he has just gotten more comfortable and obliterated the record of the past defensive player of the year Winners ! And he still has 6 or so games left …
Technically he’s the most improved player over the year too.

@@williamayotte3847 Spurs rank 17th overall when Wemby plays and fall down to 25th when he sits. Woves rank 1st when Gobert plays and 3rd when he sits. Wemby's impact is far greater than Gobert's, and Victor's teammates are horrible defenders while the Wolves have great defenders all around their team regardless of Gobert is playing or not

4th-ranked defense when Wemby is on the court; 28th-ranked defense when he's not. also, look at the Spurs' record and performance the 2nd half of this season versus the 1st half. as Wemby has improved, the team has improved as they learn to play through him.

I knew as soon as draymond played against wemby he was gonna change his narrative cause anyone who watch wemby defense in game can see it's elite and every team in the nba is afraid of scoring in the paint that they have to change gameplans just to not get blocked or stopped against wemby.
The team record rule is stupid. They literally draft the #1 draft pick to the worst team in the league, no shit he has a bad record. A rookie can only do so much for a bottom record team. With this nonsense, a #1 draft pick will never be able to win these rewards. Thats completely unfair to them.

Can’t remember the video but I saw an interview of chuck on Tim Duncan.
He said he only had better stats than Duncan because he was the best in a bad team and that’s why he himself admitted he wasn’t as good as Duncan was.
Same here yes Wembanyama has the edge on stat but he is basically having more opportunities to show off, on the other hand Rudy is putting those stats with Mc Daniels being an elite defender too.
That’s why team succes should be taken into account : when the whole team defends it is much harder to stand out than when you are the only defender on your team

I think an interesting angle on this reward would be is what Wemby did this season unique enough to break past deciding factors of the reward. Every reward has had this happen, where it be some MVP like Russ not having the best team record but still winning MVP or like Alvin Robertson winning DPOY in 1985-86 on SAS with a 35-47 record and the team defense being 17th out of 23. It DID happen. Is Wemby’s season unique enough to break the mold?
THEY should see the diffensive rating with/without Wemby on the floor and compare it to Gobert and Davis.

ouhhhh thats good name, I've been advocating for Wemby's nickname to be The Mantis, cause he strikes fear in his opponent hearts with his long arms, so guys don't even try to score around him. Now Evictor The Mantis sounds too good !
One thing I will never get is how winning matters the most in DPOY awards more than any other award. Just look at the all-time winners, I can't recall a time where a player below top 4/5 seed has not won. It is to the point now where even MVP voting does not even care for team records as much - just witness Jokic won MVP as a 6 seed, Westbrook won MVP as a 6 seed, and now possibly (although slim) Luka Doncic as a 5/6 seed. DPOY's absurdly high factoring of winning astounds me, especially when it takes accounting winning much further than an MVP award. I'm fine with factoring winning heavily for awards with the face-name keyword "valuable" within them, but for awards recognized by "...player/rookie/man/coach of the year", IMO it should just go the best, regardless of team record. Just look at the NFL criteria for instance - it goes to the man whos done the best visual and statistical combined job at something. NBA should do same, because some of these talking heads cluster narratives way too hard for these awards.
Wemby should have been on that All-Star team regardless if he's only a rookie, but they didn't let him in. He should win the DPOY, and if they still wouldn't let him have it, there's gonna be a very big problem.
