Although this video is a few years old it is super! we had plastic handles on our Harvey's manual recliners and after waiting 2 weeks for the first broken one to be repaired I decided to find a way to do it myself. A 5 minutes search on youtube for some metal universal recliner mechanisms and this video and i was ready. Took me mere minutes to replace and saved a bucket full of time and stress Thanks for being so helpful and sharing
Cheers for that, It has been very helpful. I have a leather Janda 3 seater recliner set up like this. I will be able to replace the handle now without any hassles.
Thanks for the video.. I understand how to change the handle, but my chair footrest is not realeased so the cable won't come free enough to give me length for me to re-attach to handle.. so it won't release foot rest..any suggestions?
How can I replace the release handle with a LEVER so that I can return the footrest back into position before standing up? My chair reclines and puts up the footrest, but does not go back into position. Very dangerous for old people. in other words, can you replace the trigger mechanism with a handle that allows retraction of the footrest as well?
It should be just as easy on a sofa as it is on the chair. The key is to take the old handle off and measure the recess it goes into so you get the same size handle. As they sit in a recess fitting larger ones is not possible, however you can fit better ones. In my case I took out a cheap plastic handle and replaced it with metal one of the same size, much stronger and better Hope this helps
I replaced a cable with a bicycle brake cable cost around £2.50 from Wilkinsons You need the barrel end not the pear shaped end. The barrel was a bit big but sandpaper sorted that out. The cable can then be threaded down the original guide to the release mechanism under the chair. note how the old one is fixed before removal and put the new one in the same way and adjust so the handle operates the release lever
@@dodeedo yeah, it should, but this cable had no play. As in the rubber was exactly long enough. To make matters worse, the rubber was coming out of the metal sleeve at the back end reducing the length even further. And I actually took the the left off to give to the right, as the right broke. Just as i am finally putting it on I see that the left has a hairline crack. Go online and order two new ones i guess.
Eoin McCarthy It should not be needed unless broke, a good tug moved the cable enough to get it on. I did have one to break, replaced with bike brake cable, little bit of filing needed to trim it down but easily available and low cost
if you have the cable where has it. come loose. you should be able to reattach it unless it has snapped in which case easy to replace, I did one with a bike brake cable just needed to file down the end
+dodeedo1000 It has snapped its done it to my sofa and my chair I am not good at fixing these sort things as it goes beyond painting plastering plus wallpaper I can do basic stuff but don't have clue even to fix chair lol.........Is it possible for you to right instructions down that I could follow and what tools I would need please
I have a Lane-Comfort King (Big Man) recliner. The springs that control,or aid in releasing the mechanism so it will extend out broke.I've looked every where and am unable to find a replacement. So I bent the last round of the spring to make the curve section of the springs and it will work. However I don't know where the spring is suppose to hook to.I've tried every thing, well I guess I've not tried every thing or I would have fixed it (my bad)I don't know if it can be done or not if someone could post a photo of the springs that shows where they go,,I would be grateful for sure.I need some help.

oh man.... thank you so much for this video, it saved me a lot of time and money in repairing my sofa reclaning handle.... I really appreciate!
You're welcome!
This was a great help, thank you! Im a senior who likes to fix things myself, God Bless You!
I've got exactly the same recliner. My issue was the cable became detached from the lever module. Very helpful.
Thank you so much. Watched it twice, and then fixed it so nice!
Glad it helped!
thanks for making this video - think the cable has come loose in mine, now feel confident about checking it tomorrow.
Thanks for posting! Mine broke one day out of warranty! It is made out of plastic and just snapped! This video helps!
That’s what mine just did & I found this & it’s gonna be a big help!

Very nice bit, especially the nuance regarding detaching the cable from the old handle..!
Regards...!
My handle broke in the same place on this video. Just got a metal replacement off of Amazon, pack of 2 for $10. I installed it in 5 min!
hi where can i find it in amazon what keywords i looking for?
managed to fix both handles on my reclining sofa......thanks
Well done!
Hello, how do you do it if the footrest is not up? I cannot seem to get it to go up.
Brilliant, I managed first time and just swapped it with the side that doesn't get used 😀
Great to hear!
My sofa has a new lease of life. Thank you.
Any idea where to get the small lever, bolt and spring, that the cable attaches to internally
On my chair tip it upside down the mechanism was was visible. You can also follow the cable down from the side

How do you get the control panel off the side of the armrest of a flex steel sofa?
How easy would it be to put a big handle like you see on a single chair onto a couch/sofa? My grandma needs to be able to put the recliner back down

Thank you! So helpful!!
Is it possible to repair the existing lever or do you have to buy a new one. Many Thanks
not really replacement is a quicker and better option
im looking at replacing my plastic D shape lever which broke off recently. What would i look for as to what part i would order for this?
The problem with my chair is that it seems that the cable connecting to the handle is broken, any idea how time fix that

I have a similar issue, but the cable doesn't have much play in it.
If you turn the chair over and look at the cable run there should be some play to be found

I have the new handle and everything. How can you extend the sliver part of the cable. ?

Cheers, mate! Very useful video.
