    The best thing about beaches is they are extremely personal things. They are often linked to memories and moments in our lives. So you have every right to claim a beach as the best but more important is to never forget why it's the best. You are both on this journey together in life and you'll never experience the same things in the same way ever again. Wishing you both all the happiness in life.

    North Queensland is where I grew up. No matter how far I go around the Earth, and these days I live in a skyscraper apartment, yet all day, everyday, there there is a little piece of the rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef that is with me in my heart all the time. 30 years ago, I drove my small family and my Aussie in-laws 12 hours with a rental minivan from Brisbane to Airlie Beach to see Great Barrier Reef the 1st time. I didn't know how I did that for driving 12 hours, also first time driving on the left side. Without GPS and cell phones, using AAA maps 😂😅. Anyway, we stayed there for 2 nights, and we went on different boat tour every day. Airlie Beach has been a secret vacation spot for Australians, I've helped them keeping this secret without telling anyone 😂😅 they let the foreigners go to Cairns instead. Just like we let the foreigners go to Ohau, then we go to Maui in Hawaii🤑😁😂
    Watching your video, Whitsunday is still amazing likes 30 years ago. Although they added a Whitsunday sign and walking structure, it is still an inhabited island to keep its nature. 13:30 this was the beautiful image that burnt into my memory the day I was in Whitsunday 30 years ago. 😎 Very good video👍

  • @philip4193
    @philip4193 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah, there sure are better places on the reef to dive & snorkel, however you'll be spending several hours each way on a catamaran ferry just to get out there and back (which can be a very choppy ride too, surrounded by a lot of seasick passengers). Did a trip out to the reef & back from Cairnes a while ago and it seemed that we spent most of the day underway on the boat just motoring out there & back, with only a few short hours actually moored there for diving & snorkelling. Your experience offered so much more in terms of the sailing experience, the hike and beach experience etc so unless you're a hard-core experienced diver then I'd say what you did was a far better use of a day out (and far cheaper than many dive experiences to the outer reef).
    Just a tip if you're heading north through Bowen; you can literally snorkel over coral directly from the local beach, which is a great way to experience the reef literally for free. We stayed there at the local caravan park and would simply walk down to the beach for an early morning "reef" snorkel just to start the day off.

    For the best coral you have to go to the outer reef - and that’s a long way out. However the Outer reef is closer to the coast in the Cairns region than the Whitsundays. When you get to Cairns you should go out again. From my experience in the past 2 years, reef trips are about $100pp cheaper than the Whitsundays. Try Sunlovers Cruises to Moore Reef. The best coral is at the edges of the roped off snorkling area - where it drops off into deeper water.

The colours, the number of fish, it's just like you see on TV, absolutely beautiful. One of the best, if not the best thing I've ever done. If you've come this far you can't not do it. Same type suits but the water is like you're in a bath, so warm. The life is so abundant everywhere you look. We even got to swim along with a turtle, and we saw "Nemo" fish in the little house. Absolutely fantastic.

    Great vid. Once Captain Cook left Botany Bay (Sydney) and started sailing north (1770) he didn’t realise the size of the reef and was trapped inside the reef for months, culminating in hitting the reef and damaging his ship near what is now Cooktown. As stunning as the Queensland coast is it must have been a terrifying couple of months.
    Not sure if you’re heading to Cairns. Absolutely worth doing the Quicksilver day trip to the outer reef (Agincourt Reef), Kuranda, the sky rail, and the Daintree. If you go to the Daintree, look out for a casowary, - sort of like an emu in drag 😂. Also worth the trip to the Curtain fig tree. Cairns and the surrounding area is paradise.

    Just wanted to give a warning as you head further up North, when you get further North than K'gari (Fraser Island) (where you are presumably now), Crocodiles and Irukandji (very dangerous jellyfish) become common, so definitely don't swim. Also be careful around the coasts.

    • @eurekaelephant2714
      @eurekaelephant2714 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im a north Queensland local. Only really in late spring and summer, and only in certain weather conditions, (calm ocean, particularly northerly winds), do you have to worry about Box Jelly fish. More people get attacked by sharks down south, than what they do getting stung, up here! Occasionally someone gets stung.
      Regarding crocodiles, you'd have to be bloody unlucky to be taken by a croc off a beach around here! There have been a few sightings, but thats usually after heavy monsoonal rains in the summer (usually March, April). I think Ive swum at the local beaches about 200 times and never once seen a croc, or thought about crocs. The only thing I can say is their numbers are increasing...so just use common sense and talk to locals first.
      The rivers, however, are different!. Do NOT swim in any tidal rivers, unless youre an extreme local with locals knowledge.

    Airlie is pronounced 'Air' (as in what you breathe) and 'lee' (as in a person's name). Aussies do not put an emphasis on R as the Americans do, which i think originally comes from the many Irish who emigrated to the USA. The Whitsunday Islands and area is beautiful! When we were there the whales came alongside the boat and I actually got scared that they would tip us over as they are huge. The whales migrate up and down the eastern coast of Oz.

    how beautiful - your trip today brings back happy memories for me, my husband and I visited the Whitsundays in 1997 with our 6 month old baby, - that Whitehaven beach is incredible - so lovely to see it again on your video - the coral was amazing back then, and there were gazillions of colourful fish - we stayed at Hook Island and you could walk off the beach and swim straight into the coral reefs from the shore - they were incredible - I hope they are still as pristine. We also went up to Port Douglas and Cairns that trip. Last year we went snorkelling out from Port Douglas and I was shocked at the state of the reef there - it looked like the video you shared today pale and relatively lifeless :(. Whereas in 1997 it was bright and colourful. This is too sad and alarming.

    Whitehaven beach is stunning! Fantastic camera work guys.
    Ningaloo reef in WA is another great coral reef option. My marine biologist colleagues all loved the Great Barrier Reef, but everyone of them preferred Ningaloo. I would love to travel there vicariously with you two. (And swimming with whale sharks at shark bay. And Karijini National Park.) Wherever you choose to go will be great.
    And don't put too much pressure on yourselves to regularly upload vlogs while you are up north. Places with decent internet are few and far between. Enjoy the remoteness and the wide open spaces.

    Happy to have stumbled across your channel while planning our own Australian adventure return. Your videos have been a pleasure to watch and helpful in ideas of places to see. If you haven't already passed it by, Townsville and Magnetic Island are worth a stop, made it there in 2017. In Townsville you can walk through Strand Park, lots of WW2 and Australian history. Castle Hill Lookout, you can drive or walk up and gives you a nice sunset view. Magnetic Island was a really nice day trip, walk on ferry is about $20 return. You can walk around for the whole day. Take the bus to one of the trail heads like Arthur Point, the Forts and hike for several hours. It was an interesting mix of WW2 stuff, views and koala's. Happy Travels!

    I'm so glad you guys are having the time of your life. Yep, White Haven Beach is pretty special. It just a shame you have to put a suit on every time you want to enter the water up there in QLD. The are some other nice beaches around Mission Beach and again, it looks so good you just want to jump in, but No, you've got to go put your damn suit on before you can. So annoying. I'm glad you followed either my or someone's else's advice and took a sailing trip rather than a smelly diesel boat. The pace it much nicer as you found out. Sure there are better reef areas, but you can look them up the next time you come back. So, where to next, Cairns? Pop up to Kuranda on the train. If it has been recently raining then walk out to Barron Gorge and look at the falls. It's fantastic. You love it! Show us a shot of your hotel room before you leave. Stay safe.

      Have done the sailing around the whitsunday islands in a catamaran. (from hamilton island) A week with 2 or 3 other couples/friends makes it less expensive. Those cats have sails and diesel engines. The engines came in handy when there wasn't any wind, or when there was too much wind. (blew the sail apart) Best of both worlds :-)

      @@OnePackWanderers I've lived and worked up that way as a scuba instructor - it's just a more pleasant day o'all. If your budget allows, I'd suggest a Dive course at Cairns or Townsville if you stop there. You'll see better reef. But do go to Kuranda regardless.

    • @gbsailing9436
      @gbsailing9436 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timwhelan4347 Yes I know that, but typically the WhitSundays blows pretty strong most days - 25-30 knots, so a sail experience is much nicer than other boats, and as you say, they all have motors for when the wind doesn't blow.

      You dont actually have to put on a stinger suit. Its winter and the stingers arent there. That tour company was just covering their arses, I actually couldnt believe they said it was even a requirement! Yes its a sad world we live in. Even in summer, its rare for someone to be stung. Ive swum in north Queensland waters for almost 50 years and never been stung once or even known anyone who has been stung. I wish well intended southern folk would stop saying this. Talk to the locals first please. You will not see most locals wearing stinger suits around here.

    Forgive my long monologue.
    I was excited to see you've uploaded a Whitsundays video. Another beauty! Its been such perfect weather for you to see some of it too. (I'm in nearby Mackay).
    I agree regarding how crystal clear the water is off Whitehaven Beach! I remember swimming there, and even 30 metres offshore its so very beautifully clear! :-)
    I was disappointed to see so many people walking on the beach that led up to the walk on Whitsunday? Island though. :-( Im glad so many people get to see it, but I cant help but feel sad too. :-(
    I see there is a bit of state rivalry here, lol. A lot of pissed off Western Australians, who don't want to hear that you've named Whitehaven the best beach, lol!
    The southerly Whitsundays are much quieter. (You'd probably appreciate that more, I'm presuming? You seem like that type of people?). I spent many years out exploring the Whitsundays in my boat. It was what we looked forward to. We'd always be checking the weather forecast and getting up at 5 a.m to make the most of the day. So many incredible memories! It was honestly one of the best times of my life. Back when we could all afford the boat fuel! And life was definately better in Australia!
    You made a good call - to really experience the Great Barrier Reef, you need to travel in a boat out to sea, for an hour out to it. The coral is extensive, and the water is really clear.
    Bushy Atoll is by far the best island in the Southerly Whitsundays. If you ever come back this way, I recommend it! (Its a 2 and a half hour civilian boat trip, from Mackay, but worth it). The amount of wildlife, both in the water on the fringing reef, and on the island itself (thousands of birds before dusk), is amazing! I think it may now be a green zone though, and Im not even sure you can dock there anymore...just check first. (Its off Mackay). Its not a continental island like Whitsunday island. Its just built up sand, a small island, but its like some sort of incredible paradise, and no-one else will probably be there! You can camp on one of the other islands on the way back, to split up your journey.
    You can still go out to the reef off Cairns, Townsville. The reef gets closer to the mainland the further north you go.
    Where you guys went wasnt the southerly tip of the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier reef is huge, and continues for another 600 km south towards Bundy. (Bundaberg). What you saw this video, was obviously fringing reef on an island, so, good call. Its lovely, but not like the GBR.
    Thanks for your cool video!
    You two are a joy to see! I love your videos!
    Apologies again, for my long comment!
