Right at the beginning of your video.... That mountain over your left shoulder... I've camped out on the otherside of that thing in sawmill canyon no less than 50 days. Love that place
The only other cave there that is honorable mention is the braided cave!!! I recommend taking at least two flashlights into braided cave though. If you ever go back there make sure to check out the braided cave! Love when people do videos in my back yard! It reminds me of why I live in El Malpais! Some of the caves still have ice, and there are ladders going into the ice where the old homesteaders and pueblo people would get water during the dry spells. Wonderful place to explore and wonderful place to live! Hope you enjoyed that trip as much as we enjoy living here!
@@SUVRVing I did tell myself right away that if you didn't have an affinity for both the hiking and the filming you wouldn't be as good as you are at both.
I throughly enjoyed the hike through the lava tubes. Just wanted to say you pronounced the Hawaiian names for the types of lava so well :)) Pahoehoe (fast-moving flow) is pronounced as "pa'-hoy-hoy". You must have been a star geology student . . . thanks, Tristan
Lol I've gotten a few different comments saying that I said pahoehoe wrong, but each person's version of what it should be is different. I'll let you guys fight it out ☺️
More gems; thank you! No comment about on the scoured smooth wall evident in the tube with the beautiful large skylight; very different from it's surroundings. Love this countryside! Reminds me of n/e California. Really enjoyed this video ~
So right about the Juicy Van. Some friends and I used one to explore North Island in New Zealand! That’s the first I’ve seen the company in New Mexico. Thanks for doing all the Southwest exploring!
Very interesting area. Seems random to have little volcanos and lava flows there. I enjoyed the pretty sandstone cliffs and La Ventana; will need to put that park on my bucket list! Btw, about 50 miles SE of there, about 10 miles east of Datil is the Very Large Array, a radio telescope facility. Awesome place!
Tristan, I seriously think you should put together a video montage comprised of clips of your camera falling over. It would probably last about 15 minutes though, and that could get a little monotonous, so maybe you'd better just pick out 10 minutes of the best crash-and-burns! Some suggestions for a sound track, “Free Fallin'” by Tom Petty, “Falling Down” by Joe Walsh, “Crash Into Me” by Dave Matthews, “Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights)” by Pat Travers. :)
Nice day! Enjoyed seeing the trees on that rock bridge and chuckled at the unexpected musings on seeing the light as you emerge from a cave (though I couldn't agree more with the sentiment).
California, Oregon, and Arizona have extensive volcanic areas but didn’t know there were any in New Mexico before now. As always, thanks for sharing your travels!
Well, you certainly titled this well- awesome to say the least! Loved the oculus, reminded me of the Pantheon in Rome but this is much bigger, and, natural. I also love the shots with you in them, from far away, it gives a great perspective of size and distance. I'm sure it's extra time and walking back and forth to set up and retrieve the camera, but I am cognizant and appreciative of what you've done. You film and edit such good videos. Thank you so much
I like that Pantheon comparison! Great point. It is extra work to do the long camera shots, but it is absolutely worth it to accurately convey the impressive scale of these places. Thanks for watching!
I really appreciate you describing the surroundings. It's amazing to see all the wildlife have the ability to survive the harsh conditions of the area. Thanks for sharing your awesome journey.
Really liked those holes in the caves letting the light in! So cool. Btw juniper berries do taste horrible, but you can make tea with the berries and needles that is actually pretty good (if you like tea) by just throwing them in some water and heating it up. And you can also use the tea as a kind of natural soap or body wash if you're primitive camping. It doesn't foam up but you do feel cleaner afterward, and smell better!
Thanks for another great video. Watching these videos you create give people like me, who physically are limited, to enjoy places we could really never experience, and feel like we are there ourselves - with a tour guide no less!
Loved that arch. It's nice to find out thru watching your videos that there are more arches than I thought there were and that some are very accessible.
Just amazing. The lava falls were fascinating and the skylights and arches were as well. Also beautiful. Someday I plan to move west, and this area is now on my bucket list. Thank you!
Recently found your channel, and I am so impressed. Fascinating that you find hidden gems and share your experiences. Could you say what time of month you go where you don't see that many people I've always been curious about that so that would be appreciative if you would let us know when you go and what month and day so we can sort of plan our trips thanks they're really great videos
I watched your most recent video before this one and couldn’t help but laugh every time your camera fell. I laughed when it fell in this one lol Hope it’s ok!
Yep, it's OK! Or at least it was at the time. It ended up taking a final spill that it did not recover from a couple of weeks later ☺️ Had to get a new camera.
SUV RVing sorry to hear that. Casualty of your adventures. Love the videos man. They’re so detailed..and I hope people appreciate the actual research you do into the places you go to, it’s park ranger-like. Keep it up!
Hello friend Tristan, wow! What a video today, I liked all the wildlife, and geological surroundings. That little Lizard was really turning it's head checking you out😊 we have lots of Douglas fir's up where I live, the juniper tree and ponderosa pine are neat tree's the caves , arches , were great. And I liked the Continental Divide marker. Great job again Tristan. Till next time, Bye. ( thank also for all the editing, and effort you put in you're films)
The skylights in the caves are very cool. That's my favorite parts. I also liked seeing the different types of pines. Another awesome place you found! Also Sloppy Joe's was my favorite food when I was a child. I don't know why it's so good.
Awesome video! I cracked up at "go toward the light". I took my grandbabes to the 1 mile hike last spring break, they loved it. Next time we'll go to the western side of the El Malpais. My favorite was the spelunking... too scary for me though. Thank you for sharing. That was great!
The entire video was my favorite part. I could have just kept watching. I wanted to scream don't go any further Tristan in that cave!! This vlog was really interesting . See you soon for another one.
Thanks Stephanie! I think the footage does a good job showing what a place is like, but I try to also convey what a place feels like. I'm glad that comes through a bit. Thanks for watching!
Brrrrrrr... I remember waking up those days and running my car in the mornings to get warm. Nice big turkeys! And wildlife... nice to see. I’d love to hike the CDT a little bit.its so cool to see that ripply lava! We just make more trips, right? I love the walks you do. Wish I were there now. It looks like Devils Gulch... looks similar to a hike I took... that hole was super cool! It’s fun to see you in the cave! Full day!! Awesome video! Happy trails💜
I love that you find such remote places. That cave is awesome. It’s so great that it’s still available to the public and that the government hasn’t put restrictions on it.
This was beautiful! I guess I'll have to add these lava tubes to my Whitewater Canyon Catwalk trip. ;-) . Loved the Big Skylight Cave, too. Thanks again.
My favorite is always seeing how much you enjoy your adventures 😊 Wow such a neat place with the caves, skylights and arches. I always enjoy the history and education of the areas, trees, moss, critters, etc! I wonder if you were to cut a couple pieces of a vacuum cleaner hose and attach to the heater vents and stick inside wet/damp shoes if that would help them dry out as you are traveling. Just a thought. Cool Swiss Army knife! I hope your hip is healing fast. Enjoy the journey.
Hi Sue. I think that the vacuum hoses inside of the shoes would work well, but I don't know if it'd be worth the hassle. I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching!
Lots of interesting things to see in this video. I get a little nervous when you go in the caves by yourself. Never mind me tho, I’m a little claustrophobic. Hope your hip is healing nicely and you can soon be back out exploring. Always a pleasure watching your videos.
This was a very interesting video. I lived and traveled in New Mexico a long time ago but I never got to this place and I thought I had traveled every back road in the state.
Awesome video. In about a year, I will have much more time for exploring and camping in my van. l love to watch your channel and am taking notes of really cool and off the beaten path places to check out.
Just jumped ahead again to see what you are up to in my home state. I went to this area for a college geology class. Nice little field trip.We also saw some sandstone formations outside of Grants. One of my little pleasures when planning trips is I look for similar land/geographic features in different parts of the country and make comparisons. The flows at Mal Pais reminds me very much of craters of the moon. The surroundings are different but actual tubes and such are remarkably similar. I think craters in more extensive but after a while it can get tiresome to hike for hours on A’a. Next video da na zin wilderness? Man, I’m really looking forward to that video!

All are different, but each has a bit of its own uniqueness. I have a video of Craters of the Moon coming up in the next couple of months too ☺️ Thanks for watching!
When I go on long hikes that require a backpack, I carry a backpack with water, emergency kit, etc. When I go on short hikes, I clip a water bottle to my belt and put a little pocket-sized emergency kit in my pocket. I don't particularly like wearing backpacks and don't wear one if I can get away with not wearing one.
That was another great day. It amazes me to see the wonderful places that God created for us. You are experiencing them and doing a great job bringing them to us through your videos. Thanks again, Davin

Yes
