I worked on the D&RG signal gang and happen to be in this very vacinity about the time this was filmed. Our gang cars were on a siding in Price. Our work rewiring signals and stringing new wires on the poles went up and over Soldier Summit. A few months later the gang was moved to Spanish Fork so we could work the west side of Soldier Summit. I remember working in the small town of Thistle before the landslide shut down the mainline. Lots of memories seeing this video. I worked on and saw every inch of the D&RG track from Denver to Salt Lake. I'd have to say Glenwood Canyon, the Moffit Tunnel, the Royal Gorge, the Durango to Silverton line, Tennessee Pass, Salida, Soldier Summit and the big 10 curve just west of Denver were the most memorable places I had the pleasure of working at. There's nothing like the Rocky mountains and when you add a railroad to the mix its magic. I appreciate seeing these D&RG trains when they still had a Caboose attached. Thanx for the memories. The D&RG was a great railroad!

How wonderful you had a personal connection with this incident and other memories of the D&RG. Mr. Harris shot many films along the D&RG line. I've got a lot more to edit and put up. Thanks for relating your story.

8:15 what kind of unit is that? A “low hood”? 14:46 Also, 8 mid train helpers??? That’s got to be very rare right?

That is an SD 9. yes, that's a lot of helpers. Full load of coal needs a lot of power especially for braking going downgrade.

@Lee Witten I know that most trains pulling heavy loads that go down steep grades like El Cajon Pass always have quite a bit of power. I don’t remember seeing that much power on a train. And from what I’ve seen, Rio Grande was a famous example of those kind of trains.

@Lee Witten Did Harris catch any of the U50 units on film? Not the U50c, the regular U50.

@@AlikStansberry In the Harris film "U50C Locomotives" there is a scene at 2:55 which shows a U50 #36 being scrapped. I don't think he filmed any in operation.

@Lee Witten Oh yeah, I forgot one of those was briefly shown in that video. That is a little disappointing, but at least we was able to film some of the U50c’s in operation. I like both of those diesels, it’s sad none of them are preserved.
