this is excellent stuff, really. they had a genius in the paint shop - that black/yellow/silver scheme is very striking. also great shots of some truly rugged scenery. very much enjoyed this thanks for posting

Every time I see the "garage door" on the end of the Moffat tunnel, I'm reminded of that picture of the engine that wiped it out. Think it was an SD50. The remnants of the door on the ground had a contour of the engine, bent into it, that hit it. Must have nailed it at a pretty good pace. Thanks for the video & the memory. Regards!

@@jimikrentkowski4073 Not that I can find. If I recall right, it was in an issue of Extra 2200 South. Someone on one of the train or model train forums should have better info on it.

I must be old. I recognize most scenes on this video. I could swear I saw the old Rollinsville ice house foundations. I saw the early I70 bridge construction where RR crosses under the old US Highway 6. Good video with great sound. Brings back good Colorado/Utah memories. Thanks.

If you're talking about the shot of the RGZ at Gilluly, that is a new 3 lane (added climbing lane) US 6 bridge being built along side the old 2 lane bridge. If you Google Earth the aerial view, you can see where they diverted the highway slightly to the south to line up with the new bridge which was under construction in the film.

great video, I rode the original CA Zephyr with a tour group that went just by train in 1962 to CA. After we finished touring San Francisco we headed home and boarded the CZ in Oakland, went thru Feather River canyon with WP and then RG took over in SLC. Awesome route, I have some 8mm movies of going thru Glenwood Canyon with 5 dome cars on train. I just rode Amtrak CZ in June from Chi to Sacramento and saw many sights I remembered from riding UP/SP City of St. Louis a few times . They take the old SP route over Sierras from Truckee, I got to see Donner Lake and many tunnels and snow sheds has not changed .

It's a real pity that not one single steam engine on the Rio Grande's standard gauge lines was preserved. Only the RG's narrow gauge steamers are still active on the Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec.

What year were each of them filmed?
    Examples: 1972, 1977, 1985
8:28 also, I think it was filmed in Aug or Sep 1984 at the earliest, considering there were SD50's and they were built in 1984.

    • @fmnut

A lot of the footage came from an ebay purchase and was undated. Some of the westbound Zephyr interior shots were mine from 1970, while most of the Zephyr runbys and eastbound riding shots were Red Mosers from 1973.
