lol. I hope it was fond for everyone.
I attended to get all the npcs and plot hooks out there once my party got to phandalin just as written in the book. Everybody at the table was new, myself included. They got extremely frustrated and irritated by this. It was too much information that to them had no bearing on the situation at hand. I ended up scrapping everything but the main quest. I had the town master award them the deed to the manor after clearing out the red brands. They decided to turn the basement into a base of operations and contract Barthen and Toblen to refurbish the manor proper. They opened it into a gambling hall lol. But I noticed allowing them these hijinks they felt like their decisions actively were actively affecting the game. Cutting everything else worked out just fine and I learned something as a new dm.

to make a more involved setting, I've sandboxed the lost mines with ice spire. instead of the opening story involving the dwarf, the party is requested by a lord in Neverwinter to deal with the red brands. the dwarf became a side quest. I also give strong ties between the spider character and both dragons. this builds up plots within plots. this becomes a much more complex game world than the basic adventures. I also tend to have things happen at the same time. thus, the group chooses one quest but events from a different quest are still effecting the town or region.

I was a New dm and new players so we started with LMOP in stead of going to save gundren and sildar my party said the would just continue on to the town to get the money. When they were in the town they met a few NPCs and had a run in with some red brands, then they rested and went to the goblin hideout.. it was very different then I expected. Now they went straight to Clark and defeated him. Now three out of five are unconscious. The party stabilized and then leveled up. Not sure how the rest will go.
