I just last month flew to OKC from NYC to pick up a new car and drive it back. On the way I took route 66 from OKC to just before Chicago. Lost of cool old places and small towns, but one place stood out to me. It was a mechanic shop a bit past Rolla MO and was abandoned but looked like they just closed the door once and called it a day. Still had tools, oil cans, parts, air filters, etc. 80% of the buildings roof was collapsed or gone, but they still had a 2001 Altima sitting in the bay with the hood open and the key in the drivers door, key tag and all. Had plates that expired in 2009 but I have a hard time believing it was abandoned so recently. It's not even an extremely old car, and who would just abandoned an 8 year old car?? That's like saying fuck it to your 2011 Nissan and just walking away from it. Most people would still have a loan on a 2011! But Behind the Altima was a chassis of some kind with a disassembled motor, and a Bobcat. But the coolest car was all the way in the back, a 50's belair with #23 racing #, STP oil stickers, all faded and probably 40 years old if not more, 10x more surface rust than paint , etc. But it was cool and sad to see this racecar sitting there lost to time off route 66.

Wow. I was hitchhiking at night from Albuquerque in winter 1971 and some creepy guy picked me up. He told me he was taking me out to where I could get to I-40. He never did anything untoward, but I got a creepy vibe. He dropped me off in Cuervo. There were dim lights on in a few places, but it was really creepy. I don't spook normally, but I was really uneasy. I could see the highway, but it was across a field. It didn't look too far. I thought about staying the night, but something told me not too. It reminded me of the vibe in the story, "Shadow Out of Innsmouth" by Lovecraft; a sense of rot and decay and fear. I took off across the field to get to the highway. It immediately started to snow. The wind started blowing. Hard. It was very, very dark, the only light was the headlights on I-40, scattered by the snow. Hard to tell where to go. I walked a ways and promptly fell over a barbed wire fence. I walked further. I fell into a hidden swale in the brush. It was getting very cold, much colder than it had been in town. The highway actually appeared further away than it had from the town. I hit two more barb wire fences and another swale, this one deep and I started to panic a little; I was really cold and stuck in brush. No one would find me. I got out and ran the rest of the way to the highway. I flagged down a car, a family from Amarillo who were very kind. I've never forgotten that experience, because it was the only time in my life I was ever afraid of the intangible. I have never believed in the supernatural. I'm an atheist. I suppose it was a reaction to something which triggered primal instincts to flee. The only time I've been scared like that. I don't think I'll be returning there.

The graffiti and the ""decorations" in this house look way too organized. The writing on the wall is all the same handwriting and is very detailed. It looks like journal entries complete with dates. They said when the guy went public with it, it was all moved overnight to a different house. That speaks volumes. If you read about Ted Bundy or BTK they kept boxes full of personal items taken from their victims. Just like hunters with stuffed deer heads on their walls, they want to relive the thrill of the kill.

Wow. I was hitchhiking at night from Albuquerque in winter 1971 and some creepy guy picked me up. He told me he was taking me out to where I could get to I-40. He never did anything untoward, but I got a creepy vibe. He dropped me off in Cuervo. There were dim lights on in a few places, but it was really creepy. I don't spook normally, but I was really uneasy. I could see the highway, but it was across a field. It didn't look too far. I thought about staying the night, but something told me not too. It reminded me of the vibe in the story, "Shadow Out of Innsmouth" by Lovecraft; a sense of rot and decay and fear. I took off across the field to get to the highway. It immediately started to snow. The wind started blowing. Hard. It was very, very dark, the only light was the headlights on I-40, scattered by the snow. Hard to tell where to go. I walked a ways and promptly fell over a barbed wire fence. I walked further. I fell into a hidden swale in the brush. It was getting very cold, much colder than it had been in town. The highway actually appeared further away than it had from the town. I hit two more barb wire fences and another swale, this one deep and I started to panic a little; I was really cold and stuck in brush. No one would find me. I got out and ran the rest of the way to the highway. I flagged down a car, a family from Amarillo who were very kind. I've never forgotten that experience, because it was the only time in my life I was ever afraid of the intangible. I have never believed in the supernatural. I'm an atheist. I suppose it was a reaction to something which triggered primal instincts to flee. The only time I've been scared like that. I don't think I'll be returning there.

Used to be that places like this could go for years and years without things like this going on. Now they've become magnets for more trouble than they're worth, and dangerous to the extreme. City / county ordinances need to be in place to have them razed to the ground and removed after a certain period of time, especially if there are no other legal owners that should assume the responsibility of either permanently and properly closing them up or tearing them down.
