'Cars' is among the few modern Disney animated films that Walt would have personally loved and been very proud to release, if he were still alive today. No doubt!
I wish you could find the striking view of the desert floor from the "Wagon Wheel Motel" that Sally showed Lightning on their little jaunt through the countryside. Sally: "I fell in love..." It would be nice if they could resurrect a lot of these now-defunct attractions and curio shops along the "Mother Road". Maybe help the unhoused by giving them jobs running these wonderful bits of nostalgia with housing tossed in as on-site managers and staff. It would give them a place to live, a job to keep them busy and feeling useful, and a way to restore the enjoyment of the open road that our parents and grandparents used to enjoy. A win-win all the way around!!
I was at a place in New Mexico,I asked the owner what had helped their tourism business was it the money spent by the state tourism agency or the movie CARS? He said that after CARS came out and every summer since they have seen a big swing upwards of people checking out the “ Mother Road”, most people didn’t know it existed
Fun fact: that gray building in the background of the tow Mater clip that’s in Galena, Kansas, is actually a supposedly haunted old brothel. I’m from Kansas and it makes me really proud of that a town from my state was one of the inspirations for one of the best Pixar movies ever made
Went to USA on a road trip through California and Arizona last week. I visited Kingman and Seligman, where they draw giant white letters K and S on hills, what inspired Pixar for the RS letters on the Cap Mountain
I honestly didn't understand the significance of Route 66 till after I became a truck driver. Between Oldtimers you meet at truck stops and some of the radio chatter you start to get an idea. There is the Dixie truck stop on I-55 in Illinois where they used to have a History Channel DVD of the history of Route 66 playing on a loop over a big shelf of diecast cars for sale. Then there is the Missouri Welcome center on I-44. The whole place is set up like a love letter to Route 66. The picknick area has shelters over the tables made up like famous businesses along the route. Then the building itself is set up with the color scheme of the time Route 66 was in its prime. Complete with neon signs and payphones. It still makes me laugh because they had to put up signs that the payphones are non-functional and for display only.
Loved the memories. We drove from Iowa to Texas in 1959. Lol, the quirky businesses and the heat in a car without AC left an indelible impression on this 14 year old.
I was on a business trip in 2017 to Kansas City and on one of my days off I went down and went through Galena, KS and saw the real tow mater... Dean Walker was there and I talked with him for a bit. He told me he could turn his feet around, but he didn't do it for me (I didn't ask him to either). He pointed out some places nearby that were also used in the movie. He also suggested I check out the rainbow bridge in nearby Baxter Springs, KS... I did and was not disappointed :)
Hearing all this has definitely expressed more of my gratitude towards cars for how underrated it is. Fun fact, last year I went on a family trip to Williams Arizona which is also on Route 66 that had a lot of similar architecture in the movie, they even had a weird car with McQueen and mater fused together that I find funny lol
While I was doing the Route 66, I met the lady that inspired Flo. At the Half way mark of Route 66 there is a diner, to the right of the diner is a curio shop and the owner(or at the time when I drove Route 66 in 2016) is the lady that is the official inspiration of Flo. Nice lady and we chatted for a while. Cars inspired to make the flight from Australia to drive about 95% of the actual road that are still there. Started in Chicago. Took me 3 weeks to make the journey and loved every second of it. even when some of the roads were shaking the life out of my SUV. Some of the roads are in poor condition. LOVED IT. Now I got to do it LA to Chicago.
I think the tower of tires was inspired by Tower of Pisa Don't forget the fact that Guido and Luigi are Italian, and the Tower of Pisa (located in Italia) was also warped
I feel proud that I got to see some of these places, and it's one of my big goals in life to drive all of Route 66.. Went on a road trip a couple years ago, and got to drive through Shamrock and stay a night at the Blue Swallow in Tucumcari. Sitting outside when the sun went down and the neon lit up really left me feeling nostalgic. It was the last big trip I got to take with my dad before he died that November, made a lot of memories that summer.
Very cool! And if you watch to nearly all the credits at the end of Cars, there's a "special thanks" section, and it mentions probably 2 dozen places they drew inspiration from. They really put in some work on this one.
@2:00 if you go to the wigwam motel don't stay at the San Bernardino one, my wife and myself stayed there, we found 2 cameras in our room, I went to talk to the manager about it, he was outside the front office talking with someone else so I went in to wait for him and I could see his computer monitor in a reflection of a picture behind his desk and you could see what was going on in every room, I turned around and walked out called the police they came in and took my report and walked the manger out in cuffs. I have been subpoenaed to court three times because of this and it keeps getting pushed off. By the way it was an anniversary gift for my grandmother.
I thought the leaning tower of tires was reference to the leaning tower of Pisa because Luigi was Italian. But yeah one of the reasons Cars is my favorite Pixar movie franchise is because they direct referenced Route 66. I especially love that scene where Sally imagines the place in its heyday. I have never found a scene so relatable in a movie before. I literally do that same thing whenever I look at abandoned Route 66 pictures. I just look at these images and imagine all the old 50s-era, 60s-era cars driving on it. I've been obsessed with The Mother Road since I was a little kid and I've never known why. I've never even physically been to it, or any landmark on it. Other than photo tours.
Ive seen a few of these places. I also live close to Cadillac ranch. I havent visited in a while, but i love seeing the crowds when i pass by. Kinda neat to know that its Amarillo's claim to fame.
I thought that Amarillo's claim to fame is the Big Texan Steak Ranch. I have eaten breakfast there but not the 72oz steak. They have a pool in the shape of Texas at their motel. I want to swim there someday! The Cadillac Ranch is a few miles outside Amarillo. Then there is the Bug Ranch in Conway TX which has VW Beetles instead of Cadillacs. Fun on Route 66!
That bird in black quite the hottie. The movie and the doco really do have something for everyone. Great stuff and the dirt race track they were racing is also a rip to an Arizona location that eludes me at the mo
2014 we stayed in a Tee-Pee @ the Wigwam Hotel in Holbrook, AZ ~ AND watched the DVD of Cars . . . The locals @ a restaurant had signed pictures etc from the Pixar crew pre-Cars. They told us how one of the animators used to travel through the area as a kid on the way to CA so they based much off old Rt 66.

Hello I saw a few background nods the "cloud" contrails that look like truck tires. One part is a car hood another is a car radiator cap and the front part of a car craved into the background in the rocks.
I’d also like to add that if you look in the background of some scenes in Cars, you’ll see a painted RS on the side of a butte. This could definitely be inspired by a Painted V that can be seen from town in Van Horn, TX. When I was little, we took a road trip all the way out there, after the movie had been out for about a year, and it was the coolest thing ever. Another possible nod is that Van Horn is located in Culberson County, while Radiator Springs is in Carburetor County. It might be reaching a bit, but I see the similarities.
I traveled Route 66 in 1997. It was so neat to see buildings in Cars that I had actually pictures of. My greatest loves are Route 66 and Nascar. When this movie came out I could believe my eyes. Something that was left out Michael Wallis "The voice of 66" was the voice of the Sheriff
There is a town in Arizona called Selgiman. I think it’s the story inspiration for the story. It used to be right on Route 66 but when 1-40 was built it went right past Selgiman and caused the town to loose its previous spark. I’ve been there 3 times. You Forgot The Blinking Yellow Traffic Light. I Went To This One Town A Few Years Ago On Route 66 I Think It Was Like Where It Started IDK For Sure What It Was Called But It Looked EXACTLY Like It. And It Even Had The Cars With Eyes And Stuff At This one Boxcar Motel. But I Think That Town Was What Most Of Radiator Springs Was Based Off Of.
The film Cars is my favorite animation, the first time I watched the film Cars when I was 4 years old, now I am 19 years old, I remember my happy childhood 😢😣
I went to the Cozy Cone look-alike hotel in Holbrook, Arizona one time and our room’s ac didn’t work that day and I got a nosebleed. I want to go again.
Well, I know for a fact that as terms of where Radiator Springs was supposed to be located geographically, was somewhere along the mountains in western New Mexico according to a conversation with John Lassiter that was NOT recorded. That being said, as far as it’s Thematic Inspiration and general proximity to the interstate, the town that is undeniable the closest and can be directly linked to the film in the supplemental materials as well, is Seligman, AZ. What about the delhi railroad crossing where the train nearly hit lightning McQueen Look I know it's not in radiator springs but it's still a location in the movie
The Motor Speedway of the South is obviously the Nashville Super Speed way. The Race the end of the movie takes place in the LA Coliseum, which is funny because NASCAR now holds a pre season race there.
The casa della tires tower is inspired by the Pisa Tower in Italy, even Luigi is italian!
I still get a kick out of the fact that the guy who voiced Luigi was none other than Tony Shalhoub, who played Monk.
I know I’m not the only one that thought that comparison was way off
I was just about to comment this as well. If you show a picture of the tire tower next to the leaning Tower of Pisa they are pretty similar.
Nah nah it’s “obviously inspired” by that leaning water tower 😂
'Cars' is among the few modern Disney animated films that Walt would have personally loved and been very proud to release, if he were still alive today. No doubt!
Because cars isn’t a Disney product. It’s a Pixar product that just happens to be beneath disney
Walt would love it because Cars is in the top 15 highest grossing franchise of all time.
It’s also a movie that would never be made today. Modern Disney is more concerned about some agenda rather than a charming movie like cars
Walt would have liked it because it resembles the intersection of architecture and animation. Disney himself had talent in both areas.
Maybe I should say he had talent in all 3 areas. Mainly he applied the asthetics that architects have to his animation the qualities they have.
Radiator Springs is one of Pixar's best inspirations in a franchise, as its a vivid and compassionate landscape around Arizona.
Truly magic!
Agreed!
