I think he can still run thru Gane or Volkov when they only have a 10-15 lb weight advantage which is less significant at heavyweight

It's not a matter of up or down in your weight class but it's matter of change the rules and pretending natural weight class with the weight check at the morning of the fight. Obviously with catch weight when you can't stay in the weight, how ? The week before the fight they have to check the progress of weight and that permits to check if is possible or not. Gaethje vs Holloway was a badly timed matchup. I would have liked to have seen Gaethje fight Islam instead. Islam wins the title then his 1st two title defences are against the featherweight champ didn't make a lot of sense to me. Islam had only fought 1 fighter in the top 10 before his title shot and that was Dan Hooker. He fought 15th ranked Bobby Green before his title shot. Islam has an entire rooster to fight in the lightweight division.
