Enable 480p and use the arrow icon! "Who's Next" is now REPUBLISHED yet another time to celebrate a lot of video views for the first two versions published to TH-cam. Why? Well, to offer the song in (even) slightly better quality. The old version is still on the channel. "Who's Next" is unfortunately still a hot topic today. Iran will maybe have the bomb ready before South Africa? Or do they have the bomb already? What about North Korea? This is the second republished version as of August 2009, and, as mentioned, you should use the HQ-button and enjoy Lehrer's original intro.
In 2008 Lehrer really said "OK" to "The Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel" on TH-cam, as long as the performance is not altered and as long as it's free in the TH-cam flash video format.

I love the way Tom explains the context of his songs before he starts, it's almost like he is aware of us here in the future and explains the historical context of his songs, so even people in the future can enjoy his songs as much as the people in the audience
I think he did it once bc he wasn’t performing in America and he wasn’t sure if the people there would get some of the references
@@merilinaaviku6958 I believe these clips are from a Copenhagen concert
The fact that Tom uses ascending key transposition as a way of musically "symbolizing" the escalating tensions the nations in his song are feeling is nothing short of brilliant.
On a daily basis, I consider how much lower my quality of life would be if this Copenhagen recording didn't exist
This is a Norwegian recording. The Copenhagen recording is on TH-cam too and he has a different mike.
My favorite part is when he looks up just before changing his voice and singing the Egypt part, he's clearly thinking "are yall ready for this?!". He's adorable :)
His joking criticism of apartheid caught me so off guard the first time I heard this song! It’s so biting and so witty at the same time
I´ll tell you what he said. He called my actions "indiscrete" and I agree on that, because they were. He also stated that he was not going to move to have the videos deleted, because he was not that much bothered. Also, he did not feel that my small TH-cam sins were serious enough for me to be punished, which basically means that I still have a job (thanks to Tom Lehrer).
Wait, you make money off of these
@@williamhiegel2756 I don't think it's what they meant. (I don't think I've ever seen TH-cam ads on these videos) I think they just meant they consider running this channel as a Job they're doing for Tom Lehrer to publish his work. From what I understand from the video descriptions, they just asked his permission to make a channel with his live performances, and he said Ok.
I don't know what "indiscretion" the channel owner committed (I'd need to dig up what they were replying to), but it seems like Tom didn't tell them to shut the channel down over it.
I could be totally wrong on this though.
Pure, unadulterated genius. Truly makes me want to weep with joy to think that a human being wrote and sang this.
This song gets 100x funnier when you remember Lehrer was a researcher at Los Alamos for a few years.
Did he help develop the bomb then?
@@advanceringnewholder He joined after the first bombs were dropped. But he was there until 1955 so it's likely he worked on the Teller-Ulam design
Ironically, Huntsville Alabama was a major centre for rocketry as part of the Space Race, which the military heavily funded as part of developing nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles. So, Alabama was well and truly involved with The Bomb even when this song was written.
That's probably why he mentioned Alabama
No, it's appalling civil rights record and refusal to bow to federal pressure to integrate is why he mentioned Alabama.
Correction: "its".
@@roberthill799 please elaborate.
Good point about Huntsville. It's no accident that Tom Lehrer had a song about Wernher von Braun, who worked at Huntsville after WWII.
After the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Southern Democrats shifted away from their support of the Democratic Party. Alabama governor George Wallace challenged LBJ in the Democratic primary race in 1964. By the time this song was written (1965), Wallace was an outspoken opponent of integration. In the 1968 election, he ran for president under a third party. Tom Lehrer's line was intimating that Alabama might oppose the Union, as they had a bit over a century prior.
I just love how he says "Device"!
"For 18 years they've been hoping it would just go away" when you realize that he's talking about the literal founding of the PRC
I was trying to figure out it it had something to do with China's communism. It didn't occur to me it was to do with it's founding.
Geeez....I'm 39 and only NOW I discover this genius :o
I know. I only discovered him a couple of years ago and I'm roughly ten years older than you.
FijneWIET I am 13...

Leeftijdsgewijs loop ik zeven jaar op je voor, maar laten we gewoon zeggen dat iedere dag dat iemand deze man niet kent, een dag verspilt is.
I was 2 :) known about him for 13 years now...
Love “Egypt’s gonna get one too, just to use on you know who!”
I don´t know, but it´s just so sad. Nobody claimed "ownership" when I dug those unseen recordins out of an old archive in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Because of this I´ve "lost" a lot of the video views these 12 videos collected in five years. As for Tom Lehrer, well, he didn´t think that my greatest talent was discretion, to say the least. But he nevertheless decided not to roast me for this, and he didn´t lift a finger to have the videos deleted. This is Arte on the warpath, NOT Tom Lehrer.
Tom: "Oh, Luxembourg is next to go..."
Caption: "Oh look some Borg..."
Great. If the Borg got the bomb, then resistance really would be futile...!
I love his sense of comedy
Oh, Mr. Leher, you do make me laugh.
Thank you so much for uploading this!
this song is very relevant
It will always be relevant until they're all used. Even if we dismantle them all, which we don't, the formulae will still exist until all hell breaks loose.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM!!!!!!! thanks for all the great and hilarious music :)
Personaly, I will NOT be remaining serene or calm if Alabama gets the bomb!
Japan got the bomb, or really got two.
Neither one was H, they were both U. Who's next?
"The lord's our shepard" says the psalm
But just in case...we should get the bomb!
Sad but true. He was fully determined to not perform again, last I've heard.
The sad thing is that we're likely not getting another evening to waste with him.
I came to know his music about three days ago, in the evening. The following three hours weren't a waste at all.
Germany's next, and they got the bomb. But that's alright cause we've got the Braun. Who's next?
Hilarious xD
+Jason Zhao xdddddd
+Jason Zhao UK got the bomb, but that's okay they ain't gonna use it anyway. Who's next?
Little Kim's got the bomb, but that's okay. He'll blow himself up anyway.
Griffin C. That formula's been used already.
This guy was super hotb
The UK got their own nuclear weapon after the Russians. Does he just count the "we" got a bomb as the Americans and the British as they both helped develop it?
Atom Wolf He was also in Denmark (Copenhagen) when he did this.
George hanes Copenhagen is in Denmark...
Candra Nyx Forgive me I was half asleep when I made that post haha. Anyways I fixed it.
No problem, I was mostly just confused to be honest
Haha, think there is a Copenhagen in the UK too. Just like there is a Athens or Greece in the US.

@mabarry3, it's Israel. This concert was recorded just three months after the six-day war between Israel and Egypt in 1967.
Good to see that your knee seems to have healed OK, Tom!
what tune is being mimicked at the Egypt part?
I believe it's poor maid of cairo, but I'm not 100% sure.
Alabama has the bomb? *THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN!*
@PSReldus, no, I believe most people who listen to Tom Lehrer know a thing or two about satire.
His voice sounds like Serj Tankian at times. Cool.
Serj Tankian's voice sounds like Tom Lehrer's.
@mabarry3, yes it was :-) All the videos on The Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel have proper video descriptions, including the recording date.
Who's last?
2:37 "Meet Lehrer on TH-cam:" and then YOUR profile! : O
I wish Tom Leher had a TH-cam account.
my hear ... all time
I lip-synched this song in Theater class. It's a very nice piece of satire.
0:54 for yall
@LakeMonsterManiak, visit the channel and read the channel description. If you use the everything-you-need-to-know - link you'll meet him in the only way possible :-)
MY HERO- uncle louie
Unbeknownst to public, at the time of this performance Israel had already become 'the next'.
Spot on predictions of south Africa and Israel.
LOL at Alabama. (I wonder how Alabama's military/law enforcement would justify that)
Alabama has a history of not being able to justify many of its actions.
Fun Fact: Nuclear devices are called that because they don't actually "explode" instead they "activate" or "initialize"
Fun fact: if the a-bombs weren't really bombs your fact would've been fun.
shokahoka, yes, well, Lehrer did make some small changes to parts of the lyrics to his songs over the years...
south african comment love it
@mabarry3 espescially since its been 50 years
Jose Venegas
Did anyone get the Great Leap forward joke?
India and Pakistan “mee meee meee!”
I've seen you mention Tom Lehrer's reaction to these videos in quite a few comments and I've wondered, what exactly did he say?
7 ception! Holy snap! Look! 777 LIKES AND 7 DISLIKES :O
Think you’ve missed the point, Daffyd. No tune is being mimicked in the lines about Egypt...
ha ha...whos next? we are :D
Alabama getting the bomb lol
@ThePhatGamer thats google for you XD
Haha
then we got more bombs and thats amazing but now our scientists gone crazing! who's next? then russia got more bombs and thats just better beacause now gone is tge bar setter! who's next? everyones next, thats not good now we need to form a brotherhood! who's next? NOONES NEXT EVERYBOODIE DIES!! JAHAHHA
the only one who made it is little kim,
only in this sea he will swim! he built a bomb but noone cares, cuz empty are all the chair!
ohh man. are you aware of how hilarious the automatically-generated subtitles are for these songs? it's killing me.
"Maybe Monica Lewinsky are just a story..."
"Look some borg are next to go"
Resistance is futile
☢
It's a satire. It's said sarcastically.
Vice versa, I think you mean.
i wish this was in fallout
Love these videos... apart from the annoying af titles at the start. We know who he is, what he did, and how awesome he is. . That's why we are here. Please stop.
No mention of India?
This was recorded in 1965. India did not have the bomb until 1974.
After North Korea, Iran.
israel... of course.
Only an American could rhyme "bomb" and "calm..."
how would you pronounce those words

mind if I say I hate the GEMA?? This damn institution has blocked about half of those beautiful lehrer songs for germany:'(
Thumbs up if you are here for a certain german gentleman with a handsome beard...
You know, I don't think that a bomb would hurt Voldemort very much. He would just apparate away.
Tom Riddle was born in 1926. I'm not exactly sure if he'd have learned to Apparate in another way, but if the pilot of the Enola Gay was equipped with a Timeturner he could've gotten Voldy pretty early on his rise to power.
hes like the political stephen lynch of the olden days
I just wonder how North Korea would have fit into the song?
Who's next to get the bomb? Korea of course but not the one with games but the one that's up north
Why don't you do a song about Albert Einstein cos he invented them
He did not. He and Nils Bohr just theorized the possibility of one. It was invented by Oppenheimer and Co. with the Manhattan Project.
2 words.
Mohamed Morsi.
His mannerism are similar to Bo Burnham's.
Kingneon 767676 Lehrer is actually one of Bo's Idols.
Yeah. It seems I was kind of stupid 2 years ago.
Sorry 'bout that.
Donald Trumps's gonna use the bomb real soon
He'll drop it o'er a tweet by Kim Jong-Un
This comment hasn't aged well
"Donald, please bomb South Korea."
How disappointing. I thought Tom was going to treat us to his take on Baba O'Riley, Won't Get Fooled Again et al...
"First we got the bomb and that was good.
Cuz' we like peace and motherhood."
Anyone but me who thinks that doesn't give sense?
Rani Johansen Its sarcasm.
North Korea.
Cheap, good sir, cheap
And 70 years later not much as changed. In fact its far worse.
