I struggle often to process or understand my emotions often and to empathize with others, though I'm much better at it than I used to be, so I really felt for the Queen from the beginning. It was interesting to think of how the Queen's drive to protect other, to right injustices, and to seek more knowledge consists, at least in a practical sense, her very soul. I would say that the first proof of it is the fact that a machine purpose-built for war can rule a peaceful kingdom; she does not blindly follow her warlike drive and can understand how others' suffering weakens the general well-being. Although necessarily romantic, this is a manifestation of fraternal love--more so considering she comes from another planet, so she does not share the material "roots" to connect her to her people, yet she values them. Listening to her go from coldly rational questionings to deeply affected outbursts of different emotions was such a joy, and the way she opens up to the listener is just 😭😭. I can imagine the two of them spending such long hours on placid strolls or during heaty meals just lost in vulnerable, thoughtful, and philosophical discussions about what emotions are, how they felt, interpreted, and expressed. You have extreme talents of voice and narration. All of your your characters run the gambit of emotion and even a bit of insanity which makes them even more human. The way you always play a strong female without being masculine while not losing any feminity is striking! Obviously being born _helps,_ but choosing things for yourself, feeling empathy (which clearly she does), helping people when you could turn away, all the things that people do _because_ they have souls... well, all of that either means that you've had one the whole time, or that a soul can simply be grown. Piers Anthony gets quite a lot of things wrong, but this one was right: only those who have souls think to ask about them, and the way to become alive is to care.
