In the early 1970's my stepfather was in the Army in Germany . In 1974 I flew from Germany to New York , traveling back then was totally different experience. BOEING 747 .
Of the 23-24 years that I spent working overseas, Pan American was undoubtedly the BEST airline that I rode upon, as I traveled between Houston to SFO and Tokyo/Shanghai, and Bejing, and Hong Kong, or Bejing back to Houston. Second best would have been Northwest/Northwest Orient, also across the Pacific, but between Amsterdam and Detroit, or IAH/Detroit. The ALL-time, no questions asked, WORSE was American, followed by British Airways, but American Airlines was so bad that I threatened to quit, IF the company travel department ever booked me on that airline. Fortunately, my skill set, trumped their efforts to book be on that bottom of the barrel air carrier.
I largely agree with your sentiments regarding AA and BA. I have to throw AirFrance in there too. I’ve spent many a miserable hour on their planes. Maybe they’re a better carrier today.
