SUPER HEAVY container rollover

  • SUPER HEAVY container rollover! Got to love when containers tell you they're super heavy with a big SUPER HEAVY display on them. Nonetheless, Dave and I are always up to the task and tag teamed this in our rotators. He brought unit 55, a 2014 Peterbilt 40ton rotator while I responded in Hulk, my 50ton rotator.
    Luckily no overhead power lines on this one, but that doesn't mean it was easy. The container landed on the base of a very expensive generator and the owner was already on scene very upset. We had to do this so it came up perfect without further damaging the base, the railing it was on or the building it was inches away from.
    I used my new Bailey's grommet slings for the container holes, and from there Dave and I brought it at the perfect angle so it wouldn't cause any more damage to the building or the landing gear. The landing gear are easy to bend in this situation since most people just "pull" these over. The trick is to have a ton of height and reach so you start out with your line of action over the center, so when you winch in, it brings it up straight while also to you at the same time. Then from there you can play with the cables to even it out.
    Once upright, the fun was barely getting started. The horribly shifted load made it unsafe to transport, and the loading facility would only off load if I agreed to stay behind for safety. Dave took off at this point while I supported the side of the container so it could safely be off loaded. I was starving so I jumped in to help and expedite the offload so I could leave, and everyone left happy. Yes the container rolled over, but I consider it happy when there are 0 injuries.
    All in all a fun job, what did you guys think?

    Great lift, without touching that barrier. That's a heck of a lot of damage to that container too!
    I am happy that you appreciate the effort to hand stack and unload a trailer load like that, an absolute PITA of a job.
    I had a weekend agency job at a depot unloading more tightly stacked boxes like that from shipping containers, each box about 50 to 70 pounds of carbon fibre, so a real pain to even get a finger hold to free them. Unload, stack on pallets, reload. Took weeks for my hands and fingers to recover.
    Well done for helping them out. I can imagine plenty who wouldn't.

    Takes me back to a summer job when I was in high school. It was at a warehouse where we stored sugar for Crystal Sugar. Semis would come in with 400 100 lb bags stacked on the floor. To unload we stacked them 5 high on a wooden two wheel dolly and wheeled them off. One of the distributors that picked up sugar from the warehouse left a pallet jack and some pallets so we could load their trucks. Then we could order palletized loads and just roll them off.

    • @tedfisk1211
      @tedfisk1211 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      it might be how the driver is driving or it might be how the container is loaded. 35K is heavy but they can go up to 44K or a bit higher. Also, if the container is loaded light in the base and higher up top, that will contribute to flips. The thing is that the loaders in Pacific Rim countries see an empty container and they will jam it just as full as they can, not caring about US bridge laws and that can require reworking once port discharged.

    Should have been palletized, plastic wrapped and then alternatively side offset placement in the trailer. I'm guessing it was done the way it was from overseas shipping which where the mistake originated from. Anything that can move or shift during transport will move/shift which is exactly what you don't want, especially with a heavy load. You must pack tight/secure.

    My take, and it's just a guess from an old OTR driver: Driver backs in and load is refused (there's 100 reasons for a refusal with very few actually legit;) driver gets upset and pulls out too fast, container lays over; Alex does his magic. IMHO it was a dick move by the receiver to only provide one guy and a fork. This shud have been an all-hands effort. (Alex was stand-up to help, and his effort seemed to shame the driver into pitching in.) Now the shipper, receiver, and port drayage compsny can have fun figuring out who pays what.

    The container must have been loaded with STRETCH.
    Another STRETCH will be required to offload the container.

    Containers loaded in 3rd world countries by hand save mucho $$$. It should be Law that All 'package' type loads be palletised for easier handling. Also tie-down points be fitted inside to further prevent load movement.

      Easy. Hook up to the trailer. Don't do a visual or tug test. Pull away from the the dock, pedal to the metal. Container haulers tend to be one the more aggressive drivers.
