Excellent advice as always; When people ask me what is the best vehicle to buy, I always say, one that's been well looked after. Age isn't a huge barrier to me, I choose based on mileage and condition. If the vehicle is low to medium miles, has all maintenance records, and looks to have been loved, it will love you back by taking you and your things everywhere you need to be and bring you home again safely, reliably and without any drama. No one brand is any better or worse than any other, it's how the individual vehicle has been treated that matters.
I had a 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with a Duramax and I towed a huge camper trailer with it. It towed it like it wasn’t even there, and sometimes I would forget I was towing a trailer and often made too sharp of a turn and it hit a curb.
I love how you chose not to remove the drive thru from the video! Proof that you are indeed not a robot! I appreciate the education I get when watching your material. Thanks!
Sound advice you provided however, if they plan to travel a lot, I would recommend a dually vs a SRW. The added stability and extra wheels should you have a mishap makes a big difference.
Of course, education on that question is the key. It all depends on a wide variety of factors. Wt and length of the fiver, where it's going to be traveling, what kind of road will be traveled on, how much is gonna be carried in the trailer and truck and so on. Oh, yeah, don't forget mountains. A truck that can pull well on the flat might not get up a steep mountain slope without trouble. I own a 29ft 1988 Fireball with no slides. I intend to take it to a lot of different areas, so I'll stick with a 3/4 ton diesel.
I have a 2015 F250 6.2L gas. Pull a 30' fifthwheel and a 24' steel stock trailer with no problem. Only wish I hadn't opted for the short bed after owning 2 long bed trucks.
I have an older 03 Dodge diesel. Pulls my 30ft 5th wheel without an issue. Have Firestone airbags on her and banks CAI. With a edge tow tune. Can go up a 6% grade with no issues
Let's not forget to mention height of truck bed, in relation to hitch and gap between bed rails and bottom of rv 5r. Need the 5r to ride level AND maintain a 5" gap minimum between truck bedrail and bottom of rv when hitched. Ride level or cause unnecessary wear on one axle. My new Ram sits 6 inches taller than my last truck.
Agreed with everything except the whole side of the seat being worn means more city miles. I'm a slider out of my seat kinda guy and all my seats wear fast on that side due to this. I think this has nothing to do with city or highway miles. Solid vid
One other thing to think about when getting a truck. We found out that the F350 (2017) has a cheaper tax (tabs) rate than the GMC 2500 (2015) that we had just because our state (MN) considers the 350/3500 a commercial vehicle and the 250/2500 a personal vehicle and the taxes are much less on the commercial truck. No one told us about this. If you want a 250/2500 but can easily afford the 350/3500, I would go with that. Check your local state tax rate for each version.
Excellent recap of items to look for in a used tow vehicle, with one exception, the payload capacity of the 3/4 ton vs the 1 ton. If the 5th wheel is in the 12k - 16k GVWR range it will quickly max out or exceed the payload capacity of a 3/4 ton pickup. If one is comfortable in going over this limit, but respecting axle and tire ratings, it can be done. If they're not comfortable with that, then a 1 ton is the way to go for that load. Towing capacity with a diesel shouldn't be an issue in either 3/4 or 1 ton trucks, just payload. BTW, love your channel!!
Can you do a video about dually tire change when you get a flat? Which spare should we have, the inner tire or the outer tire? Thanks! Can we use fix a flat? Thanks.
Only one spare for a dually, you just turn the wheel in or out. I have blown a tire on my dually Ram towing. You don't have to stop and change it on the road. Just slow down and limp into town.
I really appreciate your videos and love the advice you give; however, how do I narrow my search for a tow vehicle that will actually pull my 5th wheel RV? I know that my 5th wheel RV dimensions are 42 1/2 ft. in length, 8 1/2 ft. in width, 13 1/2 ft. in height. Dry weight is 14,610 lbs., Payload Capacity is 3,390 lbs. GVWR is 18,000 lbs. and Hitch weight is 3,560 lbs. I know it's a big and heavy 5th wheel, but how do I determine what truck will actually pull this RV safely? Where do I crunch the numbers and know for sure before taking the plunge and buying a truck that might not meet my needs? When I was shopping for my RV, a couple of dealerships I visited tried to tell me that my Ram 1500 would be able to pull the RV. I knew better, but those guys were supposed to be knowledgeable and RV experts, but they were just trying to make a sale (I bought elsewhere). I want to be responsible and find something that I won't waste my money on and regret later. Any suggestions?? - Thanks.
Well answered, we are also looking for a 30 to 35 foot range fifth wheel topping out around 15000 lbs fully loaded. We are probably going to get a RAM 3500 or equivalent, long beg SRW. What do you think about extended warranties for used diesel trucks if you are concerned about how the previous owner maintained the vehicle. I don’t think i have seen a video from you about extended warranties on used trucks. Thanks
Hello again Big Trucks! I need to ask you, why use the dive through? I never, unless it's be cold/icy/raining very hard!! As far as the buttons being worn, I've found using gloves a lot while driving will do that. As far as buying used? That's. It a great idea, mainly because the diesel trucks hold their value so well, you really only save money in a rig that has a lot less life left! I would buy a stripper at 45k, than a loaded rig with anything over 40-50 k miles! If price matters that much, maybe a gas truck is for you!
I enjoy your videos, I followed your advice I bought a 2015 f250 super cab with gas engine w75k miles for 22500 it took some time to find usally they are all worn out at that price I am using it to haul Lance truck camper and pull boat also going to put the ranch hand grill guard
Thank you for your information! I'm not sure if it was even THIS video, as I've watched dozens of your videos. But here's the scoop.... We ALMOST Bought a 2017 Dodge Ram 3500 yesterday, but then I realized that it did NOT have the AISIN Transmission. This would have been a devastating mistake that would have cost us almost $60,000. for a truck that would not have been capable of towing whatever large 5th wheel we are about to purchase. I sincerely can't thank you enough for your videos.
I just found a 2008 F 450 with 76,000 miles on it. Had it checked out by a diesel mechanic & found the engine to be sound. Paid $29K it is a Lariat with beautiful interior. Going to put a 8.5' Camper on it. My first diesel truck.
So I find a '17 Ram 3500 crew cab lwb 4x4 Cummins, no Aisin. 3.73 axle. Door jamb sticker says 14k GVWR. I thought there was little room for improvement and should be able to get a 5th wheel @44' long with a GVWR of 21k. I'm told that the truck's GVWR of 14k is not the limit of towing capacity. Any help would be much appreciated
I have an RV question for you. You may have covered this before so if you have let me know which video it is. When you were talking about the weigh safe hitch you hooked to an RV to show how the scale works then you gave us a walk through on the RV. You said you weren't fond of aluminum siding on RV's. I know nothing about them so I was wondering what other types of siding they have and if I decide to get one what else should I be looking for. The one in that video looked pretty nice and the price was a lot lower than I thought an RV would cost. Goes to show how little I know.
Hi....Question; I have a 2002 Ford F350 Lariat 7.3L International Diesel Dually. My 5th Wheel is a Forest River Cedar Creek 36RLTS which is 13870 Lbs. Cam My Truck pull my 5th wheel ok? I tried to find the Max tow weight, However I can't find the sticker on the door. Must have been torn off.I did look in the Owner's Manual to find it, but possibly not what I was looking for. I am the 2nd owner of the Truck and I purchased it with 60k miles on it. I had extended maintenance on the truck from the Ford Dealership. Regular maintenances and oil changes and Transmission backflush. I also put in a Gauge Pod to monitor the Temps of the Engine and Tranie. My Truck now has 240,0000 miles. Still going strong.I do used Lucus Oil in my Fuel every Fillup. Thank You for your Videos and instructions on Maintenance. I really learn a lot from them.
So you think a low low mileage early ram is worse than a high mileage 2012 ram considering price was the same? I would rather the older low mileage one with few upgrades.
Trucks are rated for both towing capacity and load capacity. How do these combine when searching for the right truck to pull a 5th wheel? We're looking at a 5th wheel with a hitch weight of 1985 lbs. and a GVWR of 13985 lbs. (UVW 10764 lbs.). Since some of the weight is carried by load in the bed, do I still need a truck that will tow 13985 lbs. or would a truck with a towing capacity of 13000 lbs.and 3000 lbs. load capacity be adequate? Thanks!
Ken Averill I have a 450 and pull a 38' toyhauler that weighs 21,000 fully loaded. It pulls like a dream. My 2500HD I will be pulling a 24' cargo trailer that weighs 10,000 on a hitch with a load distribution hitch. I prefer my 450.
How do you determine the fifth wheel towing capacity of a truck as for example the F350 claims that towing capacity of only 13,000 pounds so where you getting 15000 on a three-quarter ton truck
Sounded great, even the meal got me hungry for some fast food. Everything is closed here cause Irma is coming. What is your opinion on the DuraMax. I agree with you on the interior layout. It actually got best interior design last year. So give me a good opinion. Thank You and keep them coming!!
Would you mind doing a video on old diesel trucks from 1973 to to 1998 >>> which one would be best for towing a 28ft - 33ft RV trailer...In my state there is no smog requirement up to the year1998 on diesels, so I'm presuming that means none of those stupid EPA restrictions on going to be on the older ones.... Oh...btw...I was in McKinney Texas a month ago,, couldn't wait to try the Whataburger! uugg! what a disappointment! I even tried it 2x.!! thinking it was just a bad day the first time.....& yes! both times, dry and tasteless!..maybe should not of went to the same place? IDK....but hope you can do a video cuz I need to get a truck but I don't want a newer one...don't want all those emission issues...& I like knowing I' won't have to bother with smoging it every 2 years! I live out West, not hard to find old trucks in good condition...and pamper and garaged .
Great videos you put out! I have a question about finding out the value on a truck I'm looking at. It's a 2017 F450 XLT 12,000 miles with some factory up grade options. They are asking $59888. I've looked online at KBB, NADA, and there's a big difference in what these two say the value is. KBB has it valued at 52-53k and NADA at 58K. Do you have recommendation on finding accurate vehicle value? I'm trying to be as knowledgeable as I can before I walk in the Ford dealership. Thanks for any help you can offer!
I watched one of your older videos and maybe I missed the follow up video, but have you made the video about deals at RV shows yet? If not I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts. I am just starting to look and there are a few shows coming up in my area. Thanks!
Hi thanks so much for the information you give. I am looking into owner operator working with I'll pick up truck with fifth wheel and trailer. I currently Drive 18 wheeler and my calculations for that business pushes me away. Please what is your advice I'm getting dually truck with fifth wheel and trailer. I'm not sure about weighing at Scales with these type of equipment oh how much I can carry a excetera excetera as yet. Thank you much.
So how did lunch taste?? The grill looks nice, and if someone asked me that question I would tell them 1 ton for sure, as you know we as campers will someday upgrade, and having a 3/4 ton will just get you torn apart on the internet and forums about being overweight.
question I am looking in starting up a towing business I am looking at both the 2018/19 year F450/550 the trailers will ither be a 40 foot gooseneck or 35 foot 5th wheel hotshot trailer 1 problem is the truck bodies are alum so how will I mount the communication antennas and the amber Elights and mounting the commo equipment inside between the front seats
Also ford techs have stated not to get the 2010-2011 6.7 power stroke as the glow plug would crack and break off over time and cause catastrophic engine failure. Love your vids btw. Hello from the Rio grande valley!
I was impressed you were able to navigate the drive-thru, my 2017 Longhorn single rear wheel would be straddling both curbs in a California drive-thru.
awesome truck just curious if youd still be buying duallys if you lived in a area that gets a lot of snow in the winter ?not sure if you have much snow experice.
What about those of us who can't afford a $20,000- $30,000 truck and are looking for something older than 2012. I've been looking at trucks from the early 70's to early 2000's for towing a 5th wheel up to 35 feet and possibly at sometime a trailer up to 35 foot. Which is the better truck to buy? Do I need a dually? Thanks for any info you can give.
Coutry Girl Look at the tow ratings. The only Ford diesel I'd consider is the 7.3 from before 2003 and even the duallies are borderline for many of the heavier modern fifth wheels. Keep your GVWR on the fifth wheel under 14,000 pounds and you should be ok. Whatever truck you're looking at, just google "towing capacity (truck brand) (truck year)" and you should find the towing guide for that year's truck models.
I've been watching your videos for a while now and appreciate the information you provide. Always helpful. The question I have has nothing to do with trucks per say. What are you recording your videos with? A dashcam or GoPro?
hey bro, I am looking for a 3/4 ton pickup for hauling a 30 foot fifth wheel RV. I am looking at mostly diesels and have considered gas but I don't think the gas engines are able to tow the trailer. It weighs around 18500 pounds fully loaded with the auxiliary fuel tanks full (there are two of them). My current truck is a 2008 ford F-450 King Ranch with the 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel. It has been very reliable but it struggles to tow the trailer up any hill larger than a 3º grade and struggle to stop going on the highway. I've actually almost totalled the truck twice because the truck isn't able to stop the trailer safely. I would love to hear back from you. It would be helpful if you could even make a video on the topic. Please consider this for a future video.
Great info! Always learn something when I listen to your program. I too will be buying my first big truck big rv soon.Question. You inferred that if one gets a travel trailer one should pull it with a long bed truck. Did I understand this correctly? Thanks!
WOW !! I just discovered your great informative clips that have enlightened me very much. I am about to retire and I am convinced that a 5th wheel around 40' would be best for our needs. I would let my present mercedes car lease expire and buy or lease a powerful pick-up to tow my fifth wheel. I would use this for everyday driving as well. I was thinking about a FORD F350 with every towing option available (they seem to have more towing extras that any other!!), but hoping not to get the dual wheel version. If I read the towing charts correctly, with the diesel engine I could tow 20,000 lbs., but I am not sure because I find the charts confusing. What would you recommend for a 5th wheel around 13-14M lbs unloaded? I appreciate and value your opinion !!! Thanks... Bruce-NJ
Within the full range of Diesel engines; Cummins is by far the most widely used, (in my humble opinion)! So, with that said, it’s a bonus for the motoring public to have the option of being able to select this motor through their purchase of a RAM TRUCK, to tote their trailer of choice. Just saying.
I have a question, Sir. i want to tow/haul cars (putting them on a dolly or trailer if possible). Which truck is the best for that application? Towing hauling nothing bigger than A Yukon Denali XL/ GMC Savana.
Chyne20: RAM 3500, GM 3500HD, dually or F450.... I would suggest the F450 only because its increased steering radius can help getting the trailer into tighter spots. Also, Adaptive cruise control would be a big convenience feature for otr driving
At 32 seconds of the video you say what’s the best truck to tow with and I laughed because my f150 eco boost 5.0 truck that I tow my 22 ft rv appeared twice at the same time lol.
Excellent advice as always; When people ask me what is the best vehicle to buy, I always say, one that's been well looked after. Age isn't a huge barrier to me, I choose based on mileage and condition. Oh bless you! You actually stopped at a Whataburger for me instead of driving by. LOL I haven't had Whataburger since I left Oklahoma 10 years ago.
We have a F250 diesel and a Grand Design Refection 5th wheel. Tows the 5th just fine. No squatting in the back. It's also a long bed. Nice grill
I have a 2015 F250 6.2L gas. Pull a 30' fifthwheel and a 24' steel stock trailer with no problem. Only wish I hadn't opted for the short bed after owning 2 long bed trucks.
Sounds like good advice. One tip I've heard is to look at wear on the pedals.
Nope I haul for a living. Some was good & some was not good.
To make it short and simple. Nothing beats a Cummins. I've had all all 3 brands.
On the Fords the 250 is the same as a 350 if you order the snow/camper prep option on srw.
truculent are u saying the 250 gets 350 suspension if u have the plow/camer package?
fuzzy wuzzy : Apparently. They will both have the same Front and rear GAWR.
What's the cheapest dually with the most towing capacity
My exact question
I like the platinum grill much better.
FOR SURE!
If I bought a new ford next year's was gonna do the same thing
That's much better
Looks like it would cool better.
thegreatga iiiiiii
Finally I don't feel alone! I get the same thing at whataburger
Platinum grill looks NICE!!!!
I have an older 03 Dodge diesel. Pulls my 30ft 5th wheel without an issue. Have Firestone airbags on her and banks CAI. With a edge tow tune. Can go up a 6% grade with no issues
I feel like a huge fan just because i get the same thing at Whataburger.
Shallow Exodus
Lucky for us , we are s whstaburger state like the add says...
Solid vid
I recommend the long bed ro get the bigger fuel tank when towing an rv
The Platinum grill not only looks good it appears to be setup for better cooling more air flow.
7.3L with 6spd and compound turbo's.
AGREED!
I’d take either of DonnaSean or A8vscRrabbits options. Of course the current 7.3 PSD I’ve got is fine as well.
IDI or powerstroke?
J A powerstroke for me. 290,000 miles and still going strong.
On top of the seats look at the break petal. Will indicate a lot of stop and go driving

Have a raptor. Would love a f350 or ram 3500 for work, towing use. But that's years away!
dabear240 get the F350,... just say no to ram
Check out The comparison that Mr Truck was involved in first. Then make your decision on a 350. Just sound advice.

You need a dually Diesel. Something with a payload capacity around 5500 lbs based on the fully loaded vs dry weight of you 5er
Most 2012+ trucks will have an engine hour meter, and those are a very good indicator of how the vehicle was used.
Your videos are getting a lot better! Big fan of all your videos and I'm a dodge owner
finally WHATABURGER! lived in CC for 21 years and now in Wa sure do miss them. I was surprised I liked the platinum grill over the king ranch as well
I wish we had whataburger here in CA
Matthew Tyler
I hear you, i wish we had in n out in houston, right now my closest is dallas
Ditto for Wyoming!!!
Everytime I'm down in TX, I stop in for a FRESH burger!!!

Have fun with that 6.4 bud. You love it while you can.
Doesn't my friend 6.4 is a very unreliable motor with many issues even when "bulletproof" look a powerstroke helps channel about them
Sounds like some fun!
I would be saving up for a Cummins swap that 6.4 will grenade and cost you money.
Idaho Rider I wouldn't buy a truck with the 6.4 v8. It's not about if it will fail you but when...
Sorry late on this but I may have a choice soon on a 2014 w/106k miles or a 2018 w/117k miles. Thoughts????
Chicken, you failed. That dually screams triple meat Whataburger, onion rings and a 32 oz chocolate malt.
Fried Chicken Now: my cholesterol disagrees.
you know sophmore year high school I got a #3 everyday after school with my dad didnt gain a pound from any of it
Dammit, Chicken, Now I REALLY MISS WHATABURGER!!!!!
Coke???
Really????
Go Dr Pepper, or GO HOME!!!!
(lol!)
😆👍
I have a question, what type of truck I need to haul a destination trailer?
@Big Truck, would still recommend a 2012-2014/5 truck 4 years later?
I’m looking at a used ram 2500 diesel truck 2013 to 2014
So I find a '17 Ram 3500 crew cab lwb 4x4 Cummins, no Aisin. 3.73 axle. Door jamb sticker says 14k GVWR. I thought there was little room for improvement and should be able to get a 5th wheel @44' long with a GVWR of 21k. I'm told that the truck's GVWR of 14k is not the limit of towing capacity. Any help would be much appreciated
I would also look at the idle hours vs total hours. 25% or less idle is good, greater than 30% take a walk. Especially a diesel. JMHO

knightwing4 most other travel trailers are skinned in fiberglass over a laminate. I happen to like my Aluminum skinned toyhauler very much.

I love the new bumper didn't like that crom bumper that on looks way better with the front lights. Can you do a review on a truck camper please.
In the video you recommend a slider hitch for a short bed truck. Do you recommend the Anderson 5th Wheels-Aluminum hitch for a short bed truck.
What is the weight of the trailer that you would not want to tow with a Ford F-250 anymore?
Honey Barbeque Chicken Strip...... Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well.
Thanks for answering my question, JD, I really appreciate it! ;)
Why do you recommend a long wheelbase for a travel trailer?
Jonathan Doucette better ride long wheelbase is more stable and rides smoother.
Sounded great, even the meal got me hungry for some fast food. Everything is closed here cause Irma is coming. What is your opinion on the DuraMax. I agree with you on the interior layout. It actually got best interior design last year. So give me a good opinion. Thank You and keep them coming!!
hahaha, in the drive through while making your video, love it. Great job on these btw. Very helpful.
Please can you guide me regarding lowering the ride height of a half ton or 3/4 ton pickup, to the same (or lower) ride height as a 1/4 ton truck.
an you do a video about trucks with the def and egr systems. Are they a problem do you have to replace them should you delete them and such
Can any diesel truck run through California hauling something for business purposes (non resident)
Why did your opt for the king ranch and not the platinum.
Are you going to put on sulastic shackles on your new truck?
Your explanations are absolutely amazing
You make Great advices for lots of people :) (Keep it up!)
exact same things i look at, seats, pedals and controls.
Do I need a 3/4 ton truck to safely pull Forest River arctic wolf 251 MK lightweight fifth-wheel?
question I am looking in starting up a towing business I am looking at both the 2018/19 year F450/550 the trailers will ither be a 40 foot gooseneck or 35 foot 5th wheel hotshot trailer 1 problem is the truck bodies are alum so how will I mount the communication antennas and the amber Elights and mounting the commo equipment inside between the front seats
Had a question about First Time RV purchasing a travel trailer with hail damage done to the roof? Any opinions and advice you can offer will be great.
Any videos on horse trailer towing ?
I like the platinum grill better. Don't get me wrong I like the look of chrome that's been well done. But I hate maintaining chrome.
Also ford techs have stated not to get the 2010-2011 6.7 power stroke as the glow plug would crack and break off over time and cause catastrophic engine failure. Love your vids btw. Hello from the Rio grande valley!
dabear240 don't forget the ceramic balls in the turbos
6.7 started in 2011. 6.4 is a 2010.
Nickelwork87 you are correct it was announced in 2010. Production began in 2011. So the first 2 years of the 6.7 had the that glow plug problem.
Are there any issues with bed height is stock truck being too high for fifth wheels?
Can you give the towing capabilities of the 3500 srw vs. 3500 dually? I'm going to be getting a 5th wheel about 35 ft. with a GVW of 16,000 lbs.
Sure would like your feedback on the Automated Safety Hitch System from your neighbor in Sanger, Texas
I'll try to see if one is available for review.
Alway enjoy your video's. Quick question why did you mention the long bed if going with a travel trailer? Thanks
I've been watching your videos for a while now and appreciate the information you provide. Always helpful. The question I have has nothing to do with trucks per say. What are you recording your videos with? A dashcam or GoPro?
And Bro: I have 2 LG G6 smartphones exclusively for recording with no cellular service. I use them since they have widescreen recording
hey bro, I am looking for a 3/4 ton pickup for hauling a 30 foot fifth wheel RV.
Thanks!
bpspe1952: yes sir, helps tremendously in regards to reducing sway. More so than even the hitch.
Thanks... Bruce-NJ
Bruce Moore hey Bruce, did you make a decision?
This is corpus christi? Looks familiar
Gotta love whataburger!
Within the full range of Diesel engines; Cummins is by far the most widely used, (in my humble opinion)! So, with that said, it’s a bonus for the motoring public to have the option of being able to select this motor through their purchase of a RAM TRUCK, to tote their trailer of choice. Just saying.
The best truck to pull a heavy @ss trailer is one that has a 4.11 or higher rear diff. Higher than 4.11 if previous owner put large dia tires on it..
I have a 40' 5th wheel from my friend he bought it 6 year's ago I was wondering what type of a truck should I get a 3500 4500 or a 5500
What kinda used truck would you recommend for pulling 24ft enclosed trailer (normally loaded with used computer equipment so some time very heavy )
Big Truck Big RV Cool, thank you for responding!
At 32 seconds of the video you say what’s the best truck to tow with and I laughed because my f150 eco boost 5.0 truck that I tow my 22 ft rv appeared twice at the same time lol.
Wondering how you record your videos? What dashcam are you using and how did you mount it?
😎 You passed Jack In The Box for Whataburger? Good call.
what kinda mpg are you getting with your new truck vs the F350 you had?
Where can I go to get a fifth wheel place on a Dodge Ram?
