Niu NQi GTS review | Drag race vs Grom & PCX

  • The Niu NQi GTS is an electric scooter built for city riding. And that’s key. We’ve ridden a lot of electric motorcycles, and while we’ve really enjoyed them, the range can prove restrictive.
We want a motorcycle to do anything we want, whenever we want, and if we decide we want to go to Scotland tomorrow, we can only really currently do that with petrol power.
But a small scooter has a very different purpose; it’s for scything through city streets. It’s for nipping to work for yet another meeting. It’s for grabbing some shopping or a takeout. And that means range isn’t a problem.
The only way to properly review something like this is to live with it, so we borrowed the Niu NQi GTS ‘Standard Range’ model for a couple of weeks to see how it slots into our lives…

The battery does not die after 1000 charges as you've written in your review.
The manufacturer of the battery cells has given the following values:
      0 - 600 charging cycles: 90% - 100% of the original capacity
      600 - 1,000 charging cycles: 80% - 90% of original capacity
      1.000 - 2.000 charging cycles: 70% - 80% of the original capacity

I have the nui mqi gt evo...had it for 3 months now..good for 64 mph.. . Amazing bit of kit... No more petrol or road tax for me & insurance £136 for the year fully comp... No problems & no hassles.... Currently working on a solar panel battery bank so I can charge for free also... There the future for local commuting for sure.

Can I ask who that's insured with? Cheapest I can find is £350 fully comp - more expensive than my CBF500!
(I'm first year with full licence, no bike NCB, garage storage, work as a bus driver).

    Definitely the pcx125 for me.
I’ve just ridden mine 3400 miles from Bristol UK to Hungary and back. Cost me £173 total in petrol with a tank range of 240 miles.
    Can’t really beat that :)

Great Review. On the range, despite your longer commute, average Uk journey is 8.4 miles. £1/100 miles to run, free if you have solar.

Good review guys. I own my Niu NQI GTS Sport for over one year now, and i'm really really satisfied with it. It shows that it's trustworthy and guarantees longevity. Oh yeah, and the storage? The store i bought it from installed a 60£/80€ 34liter topcase for free. I only had to pay the 100£/119€ topcase-holder, which is of course from Niu itselves. That, in combination with the shoppingbaghook, gets you the groceries done. Goin' to the job from home takes me 13 minutes by car (on a rainy day), and only 4.5 min. with the Niu. 20% batterycapacity used for the double trip. Not bad👍🍻

NIU is actually pronounced "new". You had it right at first!
I really like this scooter. It's perfect for urban riding and for most people the range is acceptable. If you have off street parking, then charging it will not be an issue.

I just got one here in Seychelles. No highways to speak of, lots of going up and down (recuperation!), topspeed of 50mph totally sufficient. Real world range here of some 55 miles is perfect for my daily needs on a 155 sq km island. Using it for going into town, supermarket and marina⛱😎 for lunch. Versatile and next to no maintenance, no more crawling around on the floor changing oil and setting valves.

    2 batteries allow faster acceleration.
I used one for 8 months delivering groceries for a delivery company. Build quality suffers after high mileage, brake pads and discs, front break is grabby and can eventually flip you. Battery replacement = £999
Must charge each battery individually to help preserve charge cycling.

It’s just not fast enough for me. Here in rural North Yorkshire where I am surrounded by single carriageway roads, if you can’t do at least the speed limit, it is potential suicide with some of the nutcases of the road. A bit more speed & a bit more range would make this a game-changer!

I’ll tell you a laugh with the NIU. Because it’s electric i live in a ground floor flat with lift and ramp access for disabled tenants, I just run my bike up the ramp into the (wide wheelchair accessible) one external door and my own wide front door and into my house! No worries about theft/security,charging or winter!! It’s in my hallway, heated and dried out all the time. Because it’s electric there’s no combustible petrol and invalidated house insurance or endangerment to anyone else. Same as an electric bike. Do that with an ICE 🤪

I purchased an electric motorcycle for my wife for local journeys. But this scooter is simply useless as a "scooter"... I commute daily on a scooter and do over 30,000 miles per year. Under seat storage is VITAL. Range is also important and 40 miles is just not enough for real commutes.

Two batteries still no range. With the two batteries no storage. Pretty useless really. Would I get fed up very quickly with lugging batteries in and out and that charger. Absolutely. The motors in most electric vehicles now not too bad. The batteries in most electric vehicles still not worth having. Even high end fast charging versions. You keep fast charging them see how long they last. Replacement cost astronomical. The battery technology is still miles away from being an every day solution.
