I can’t believe this video came out four years ago. I still remember watching it right after it was posted. Y’all have really helped me in my career. Tips and tricks, exposure to things I hadn’t seen before. It’s much appreciated.
Thanks guys, this was exactly the texturing style I was looking for. So many other videos are on TH-cam that show every other texture and I don’t like any of them. This is what all wall texture should look like.
The old local Ketchum rock-n-roll band called "The Bobo's", the lead singer, "Barbeque Bob" was a drywaller, I swear that eons ago he and his crew musta been on some kinda mushroom acid trip and came up with the "Sun Valley" texture technique. I know for a fact, 'cause I had to hire him in to texture a patch job I did for a customer up East Fork, I couldn't figure out how to match it, but it was a house he did years before. I did eavesdrop and learned his style, knowing I'd run in to more of that style of texture to match, which as time went on, I did. Yours truly, Dan Dan The Handyman.
😊 Very beautiful work. I've been working in drywall construction for years 😊 I just love it except for sanding 😂 . I would wet sand as much as I possibly can. I like the look I do this pretty much the same. It's just a lot of fun. And you get paid for it 👍 And full time you don't have to go to the gym. I use a magnesium or aluminum hawk but I prefer magnesium a hawks. But the finish is really what matters. I live in the deep South and most everybody I know use a hawk and trowels or a broad knifes various sizes of drywall knives just like various sizes of trials and some I know have to be stainless steel. I keep a pan in my work bag to keep all my knives and trowels in it because I don't want anything scratched your damaged on my knives or trowels. And yes when you're doing a fresco I finish I do use a pan most of the time for that.. Nice job looks good. 👍 I remember doing skip trials... (They were a bit different from what you've got but everybody has their own taste) on the ceilings down in Florida Keys on stilts and I'll tell you what that will wear you out after you do a large houses like that but you sure do sleep well 😊…I freeze frame pictures on TV and try it and think of what it looks like and how they did it and that's when a friend of mine told me I did a fresco finish I didn't know it was a fresco finish I just freeze from the picture on TV and liked it. I thought to myself how would they do that finish so I gave it a try I'm spending the mud down putting it in a hopper spraying it having it on some places later on the other let a glazier skin get over it and then knock it down some places slick out with a heavy part is in some places do not. I really like that pattern. I was extremely flattered room too very prominent drywall contractors ask me how I got that finish. Talk about making somebody's day 😊. When are the little trick I found out and working in a house with carpet and then I dropped the whole hawk full of mud in the floor all you do is dry your hawk off really good and leave the mud on their don't clean it and stamp it on my mind that you drop it'll pick it right up and all you got to do is brush the carpet will the wet cloth it works I promise, but you probably already know that technique. Thank you for sharing this is very pretty work 👍. I'm going to be doing some more work at my house soon. I have some Tuscany finishes some southwestern finishes and of course the fresco finish. One last thing I really enjoy putting a little bit of ivory dishwashing soap and joint compound because it makes it so smooth and it smells good too... it's true... Well again thank you for sharing 😊. Please excuse any spelling typos because I'm going to hurry but this is a really good video thanks y'all 👍
One tip I can add is don't overdo the amount of mud on the surface. It's surprising how much texture you can impart with a suttle wave or void once it's painted over. You don't want to end up having it look Gothic and clunky. Also, work a bigger area like you were doing and sweep 2-3 feet at a time and fairly rapidly so it doesn't look like a bunch of small quadrants stitched together.
Some of the old timers would add sand into their mixture, and that is where the name "skip trowel" came in, since as you spread it on the wall it causes the trowel to jump and leave these voids. It is a great way for beginners to learn. Another tip is that you can always just scrape it off the wall and start again if you dont like how it turns out. Lastly, if you sand using a lightly wetted sponge, it creates no dust and you get a very smooth finish. Im in Caldwell Chris, I could even swing by a local job next time you are doing texture and show you some tips if you would like. Im up in Donnelly doong this right now and used your video to show the homeowner how easy it is.
Yes, Sun Valley Texture is in all the lodges at sun valley ski resort. I do it with a pan and knife and yeah it's fun lol. Been doing Sun Valley texture for over 20 years in business 32 years, Classy Drywall. Mountain Home Idaho.
thanks for sharing Some of my walls have been floated and now I'm going to texture to cover up nail that have popped through and a few cracks that have appeared. I'm from Idaho but ow live in Texas 30 years. You do a good job and made it easy to understand
Great video!! I tried this method of texture on my garage and I Feel like I did an OK job! I posted the video on my channel and It may not be perfect but I am happy with the results!!
HELP! How do I prep a painted wall so I can apply texture? Someone applied patch to a textures wall so now the patch area is flat and does not match the surrounding knockdown texture. Can I texture over the paint? Should I sand it down somehow? Does it need primer? Thanks!
First time I tried this it was in the master bath if my house where the owner had painted over gloss paint with no prep. I have never seen paint peel like that. Not knowing anything about doing this I used 20 minute mud. It came out surprisingly well, just had to work very fast. It was a small bath though. I did know how to use a trowel though as I did decorative concrete.
Yes you can buy it dry, I buy it in 50 lb bags, and mix it up on the more fluid side and dump it into my mini hopper with a spray gun fed by air compressor that I use to shoot onto the walls and knockdown 10 minutes later to give a thin stucco texture tot he drywall.
the house I may buy haas bamboo composite panels, I am thinking about doing this over them, as some of the panels are bowing and the joints aren't flush, I like the looks of this. the bamboo panels are unfinished and slightly textured (not smooth) can I just put this right over them? or do I have to do something to it first?
Hi Criss and John in Mexico that teckny it’s very popular I used to do there whit my father 1 coat the primer and two coats the spackle and lucks like skin coat 1 Moore coat primer and 2coats the paint and this lucks nice and smooth like you said everybody work diferent and the texture always lucks diferent
The choice of tools is even more localized. I'm in Western New York and I use the hawk and knife combo. What's with Chris' application being sped up? A very nice tutorial! Thanks gents!
Dear Idaho painter, I have been watching your videos for a long time now and half of what I know about painting is from you (the other half is from messing up lol) but I am in need of some help! I'm Remodeling an entire house right now and two things: 1 how do I patch perlite wall texture? And I'm removing all of the popcorn from the ceilings and going back with orange peel. My problem is that I'm getting lines in my ceiling paint. I'm priming two coats with kilz PVA primer (spraying and backrolling) and then painting the ceiling with sherwin Williams eminence (flat) and purdy rollers. How can I prevent lines in the ceiling paint?
Alex Johnson well what I've done is I would spray the ceiling with plenty of paint and if your rolling add some floetrol or water to the paint so it can level out
New Generation Painters NGP inc I thought about adding floetrol but the eminence from sherwin is already pretty thin. But I guess it wouldn't hurt to try haha
Do you ever get bubbles? We do alot of drywall with our paint jobs and usg +3 lightweight mud is superior for a Santa fe texture! You should try it, you will like the consistency and flow. Love the videos.
Great how-to video, Guys. I was thinking you oughta' be plumbers, cause you really know your shit. That's an old plumber joke, I was a plumber apprentice in 1963, then changed my book to pipefitter. Anyway, I'm getting ready to drywall my basement and, as it so happens, my new house was all done in Santa Fe, or Sun Valley, texture. We're in Idaho Falls so that's probably common here. Thank you so much for a great video. I think, maybe, with a little practice, I can do a reasonable job of matching the texture we have in the rest of the house. I like your technique, and I like your personalities. You make the video fun to watch, as well as instructional. Good job. Thanks again.
I had to replace a whole room of drywall because my son lost his mind and knocked holes in it the guys that hung it didn't do any finishing and I'm trying to figure out how to get this done by myself. I'm disabled and don't have money to pay someone. I'm in Boise. Do you guys know any organizations that help people in situations like this?
Sherwin Williams non shrink spackle can be troweled thin for an ultra low texture. It dries quickly and is ready for paint. NO DUST. NO THINNING. Strike it on hard to make it go far. I still have the sample board I did and this texture is stable.
Long story short, old house, lots of wallpaper, including the ceiling! I think I’m down to sheet rock, did you say we don’t need to primer anything when using this type of product?
That’s not a skip trowel texture as I learned it because the trowel is actually supposed to skip over the wall but I would sure like to see it when it’s painted
So he said use eye protection and immediately the guy goes to apply it and zero eye protection?😅 Absolutely no shade here, just an observation lol You guys are great 🌹
There is this really cool feature you should learn how to use, its called fast forwarding. But, im sure you know that already, since you dont need any extra info. I mean, why are you even watching the video if you dont need any tips? Maybe you should make your own video to show us all how to properly do it? Carry on
Thanks for the video. I'm looking for ideas on different textures as I don't necessarily want the knockdown or orange peel that's so common in wall texturing.
Anyone can slap mud on a wall and pretend they're a specialty expert. Making it look good rather than coating the whole wall and getting it done quickly unlike what you're doing is another story.
@@matdomm Painter always gotta give other painters a hard time. I could roast him on this so called Sun Valley but he did his best and these days thats a rarity.

My dream would be to paint one day with the Idaho painters crew !
Do I need to apply a coat of primer before painting over this texture?
I work a 4x8 section applying a skim coat then using my hawk to dab then knock down. Customer loved it.
Nice
i like how you guys consult each with advice for the job , that good team work
Nice and fun video, plus thumbs up for Boise, Id. II also liked the two way communication.

Great to learn the technique, but would have loved to see the actual results on the wall.
OK

Yes you can

Alex Johnson more then likely not enough paint. You need to soak the ceilings.
Oh cool! They are live at 7:00 pm on Mondays. It seems they have a free giveaway, too, on Mondays during their live stream @ 7pm.
I would have liked to see the final result clear and up close, good vid tho guys, thank you.
Good idea, thanks for the feedback Tommy!
If I'm going to texture do I have to sand
Hey, did you guys know they are live every Monday at 7:00 pm and they have a free giveaway?!

Ok hire you guys. There is a reason for pros existing
Does this dry white?
Yes
Up north chris says, I use a hawk because if your mud dries out in your mud box it's very hard to clean out!

thanks so much guys. i love Boise, ID.
No finished update?
Coming
How do you do inner and outer corners?
Smaller tools
That’s not a skip trowel texture as I learned it because the trowel is actually supposed to skip over the wall but I would sure like to see it when it’s painted
You need to put a SET in your trowel. Less lines in your mud
Go ahead with your bad self boys
You should do close up so we can see how the texture looks like because from the distance you filmed we can see only mod in the wall
OK
I would highly recommend Kirk Giordano plastering on TH-cam. He and his family have great interior and exterior plaster videos.
Nice instruction but can't really see what the texture looks like.
Next time
Hey brother Love stuff you do have a ceiling bumpity bump any suggestion how to hit the flat spots I
So he said use eye protection and immediately the guy goes to apply it and zero eye protection?😅 Absolutely no shade here, just an observation lol You guys are great 🌹
OK
I now have a craving for pancakes.
So, is that drywall compound or topping?
Did you thin the compound before spreading it?
Serge Shariy watch the video. He explained that.
Yes.
Every cell in my body want to make the wall as smooth as possible. No one here in Sweden wants texture.
Lol - y'all are entertaining! Thx!
Thanks for the tutorial, guys! This Boise Native is appreciative : )
I really believe those kind of textures on drywall were invented because someone messed up and someone actually liked it so it became norm.
in lewiston we call that the holy smooth
lol
×2 speed your wellcome
yep
Should call it the trap house texture
Thanks for sharing. Idaho falls, Idaho

This is the most homoerotic thing I've ever seen 😲
Why is John Cena texturing? :P
Where I'm from, we call this giving the wall character... lol
lol, thats what it does
Thanks for the video. I'm looking for ideas on different textures as I don't necessarily want the knockdown or orange peel that's so common in wall texturing.
Thanks for watching Jesse!
Are you guys couple? Cause I gotta say, ya'll are just adorable together...
I do a lot of drywall jobs in Phoenix and I know that

Don't get better at it, as you go around the room.

Thanks for watching!
Can't get to the minute 4:30 without skipping........go to the point, you just talk too much!
ok
Lol good taste in trowel brand I use the same one, but needa practice more with ur trowel up. Not trying to hate just giving friendly advice.
Thanks for the advice!
So basically it's a skip trowel
For some reason I think you guys fucked up that wall.

John cena !?
And people actually pay for that look.
Mud way too stiff
Guys you should do a vid on your foot wear. Being on your feet all day is not insignificant. Do you guys have a warm up routing?
That is a good idea!
I thought it was some new style of texture.
looks good .... but if I were you id stick to paint... y'all are way better at painting. thanks for the tutorial anyway
Agreed, but sometimes our customers ask this of us
Boizee 🤔
That’s not skip trowel is Santa fe
RPG 37 I said it’s called sun valley texture here if you listen and read the title
Nasty 😊
You guys should talk less. Get to the point!
