There is no time for learning psychology or how to de-escalate aggression by verbal communication and body language, if the training period is as short as the training of a private rifleman in a reservist army. Police is also a much more respected profession among young people in the Nordics, and the police colleges get to choose only the most suitable applicants in the long process of comprehensive physical, psychological and academic tests. In Finland, for example, there are 15 applicants for each new police cadet. +Alex Romanov I would have to say the largest difference in training of US police and the Norwegian police is the academic duration and construction. In America the average police academy training program is 19 weeks. In Norway, you are required to complete 3 years with a bachelor paper to become a police officer. Additionally one of the courses is ethics, and is considered to be crucial in making a good law enforcement officer. From what i understand, Us police academy have a course on how to deal with civilians. However the couse has been criticized for training officers to dehumanise civilians and develop aggressive behavior. That's my theory anyway.
The longest is San Diego with 6 months, and that's not even close to being good enough by my opinion. As a police officer you need thorough studies in law aswell. How can you enforce the laws when you don't even know what the laws are..:/
US cops needs to focus on learning more psychology to de-escalate situations. A lot of episodes I've seen from the US could have been solved peacefully if the cop knew how to de-escalate the situation.
The problem for the US is that they rather spend the low taxes on war instead of education. Education is relevant for everyone incl. cops but this is what the US choose to ignore again and again. The situation will simply not get any better in the US.. it just can't because of its mentality. The scandinavian model is to logic to simple to humane to fair for a majority of americans to optin for it. The only way to fix the US is for the strongest party to win and the right wing will kill to keep things as they are or to even make things worse. There is no future in the US for humane persons... its sad but you can always fight or migrate to another country. Best regards from Denmark (we share, via our taxes and we invest in the future and people) Something the US does not...
Civilised Norwegian police officers, and education and respect comes first, not like in the USA,power, anger and revenge, and no respect for other human being, not 100% are like this, but the rest pay for the others actions!
It helps that they brought a TV team to "document" their nice behavior. (This was recorded for a tv show) They're not as nice when there are no cameras around, but not even close to the level of degeneracy you see in the US.
@@Juksemakeren yeah of course they may be playing it up a bit for the camera, but when you watch the american COPS tv show theres a big contrast between the two
+Luke Day Because the police and the people know how to respect eachother... It's not like in America where you get punched in the head and thrown into the ground and get a gun pointed towards your head for even the silliest things... Read about the Swedish police officers on vacation in NYC that stopped a fight on the subway without threatening them with guns or tasers...
Håkon Mo Flataker I read about the Swedish Police ignoring racially motivated crimes against native blonde Swedish woman, And Sweden having the highest rape recorded crime by foreign born in in the EU. Why cant the Police stop that?
***** The Swedish police never ignore crimes against their own people... What they failed to do, was to not tell the Swedish people that it happened, especially in Stockholm... But Sweden has so many Ghettos around the country that it's hard to cover all areas with police either uniformed or civilian... Malmö is the worst city... It's all about managing to place the resources in the right places at the right time...
***** Sometimes the Norwegian police have to drop silly cases because there are bigger cases that just came in the door... We don't have the resources to cover everything at all times and they always prioritise the most serious cases... If there has been a fight at a nightclub and suddenly there is grand theft auto going on somewhere else they quickly make the troublemakers go home and continue to the next scenario fast as hell... District Norway is shorter on resources than the capital and other major cities... In my region the police share the only police boat we have and we take turns on having the main responsibility on answering emergency calls and calling out police officers that are the closest to the scene...
Håkon Mo Flataker That doesnt seem to hide the fact your own police force is hiding the facts about your woman being sexually assaulted. Yet you say you have one of the finest Police Forces in the world? I cant see the sexual assault of young girls a silly case.
Ok, so this video is old. But in my younger days I experienced almost this. I was a drunk idiot making havoc on the streets, but the police acted just like this with me...nice and cool and laughing with me, not AT me. They helped me and straightened me out and I'm forever grateful.
when Norwegian cop shows use that voice deepening thing (unless that is his voice. then god help us all) that every cop show uses, it just makes the criminal sound like some Norse god or something. It's great.
It's the Northern dialect, more known as a Nordland/Troms dialect leaning more over to them Troms one because of all the diphthongs). Since I speak that dialect and didn't even notice that drunk guy cursing in this one. The cursing is a whole another entertainment when we are the ones cursing. The Southern ones sound so tame in comparison.
This is literally why we generally trust our police in the Nordic Countries. Not that they can't make a fuckup too, but in general they are very well trained in psychology and absolutely most arrests are nonviolent. Even when a situation escalates they are trained to use minimum force required. For instance a provocateur politician held a meeting in Aarhus (denmark) against immigration and where attacked by a man with a knife. The police shot the man in his leg (one single shot) disarmed him and provided first aid during his arrest, until he could be taken to a hospital. You only use the force necessary to dissolve the situation and nothing more. Always keeping the situation as calm as possible, that is basic knowledge anyone coming through police training should know by heart.
Not sure about other Citys in norway, but im Bergen they beat the shit out of you if you act that way, really alot of corruption in the police force in Bergen.
Yes - I agree completely. It's like an episode of Supernanny! When the stupid toddler lashes out - he's automatically picked up and put in the police car with no anger or shouting. Just ruthless efficiency. His "naughty step" will be a jail cell for 8 hours (not 8 minutes). Excellent police training and discipline shown here - at every stage, they knew what to do. Almost like the best football referees too.
MacClay8 It's pixelated to hide the man's identity. Like someone else pointed out here, and I quote: "The right to privacy is extremely strong in Norwegian society. Suspects are identified only in extreme cases. In most cases not even murderers or rapists are identified to the public. They must be able to live normal lives after serving out their sentences." So his offense being a drunkard is of no big concern in the big picture.
Daniel Svendsen Yeah, I know. I was making a joke about the voice distortion making him sound like a Klingon, while also implying that the pixelation was a natural phenomena rather than an after-effect.
spiritofanu Here the education to be a police is several years, to know how to handle all kind of situations. You need to try to de-escalate the situation, that’s how norwegian police is trained. Some months education, like some states in US have, is far from enough.
Haavard Doksaeter I agree - the other factor that Americans do not want to acknowledge is the out of control gun epidemic there. I feel it is easier to diffuse a situation knowing the probability of a gun being involved is minimal. Keep up the good work with your focus on diffusing and sensible gun laws. We are similar in Canada but can do much better. ❤️🇨🇦
I got so confused in the end when they said “sykehus” because it sounds almost exactly like the Swedish word “psykhus” (the p is silent) which is slang for mental hospital. Good thing that I had the English subtitles.
Great that they examine people before taking them into the drunk tank. Some severe illnesses may cause symptoms that may have a person seem drunk, for instance a person on the verge of going into insulin coma, they may be confused aggressive and smell something like acetone. Sending someone like that to sleep the booze off may have them killed. WhileI suspect this dude in the clip may be an old aqaintance to these cops. He goes through 3 pockets thorougly, so I knew I was fucked. I start grabbing into my pocket to get the gram He tells me to keep my hands visible I dig down into my pockets too fast to hear him and stop He does nothing I pull up the gram and say "Eh, you got me" Female cop pulls out ticketbook I hand over the gram to male cop and he says "thanks" I get told I'm being fined 1500 kroner (about 220dollars) I accept my ticket. Both cops tells me to have a nice day with a polite demeanor. I say "likewise" I was grumpy after, but I knew the risks. I get my ticket in the mail.

Hi, I’m from the U.S and I wanted to know why so many people from Norway or Sweden can speak English. In the U.S (well southern U.S) we are only given Spanish as an elective language to learn in school any other language would be self taught. so how and why do so many people learn English ?
@@bumgarner4987 I am norwegian. English is a mandatory subject in all norwegian schools, so we start learning it when we are in 1st grade. It is an international language, so it is nice to be able to communicate with people who can't speak Norwegian. Especially since we have a lot of tourists and immigrants in Norway and we come across a lot of English entertainment, etc. When we attend ungdomsskolen (junior high?), which is 8-10th grade, we can decide to learn either german, spanish or french, the options may vary from school to school depending on the available teachers, in addition to Norwegian and English. If the student doesn't want to learn another language, it is possible to specialize in Norwegian or English. Norwegian consists of two written languages, bokmål and nynorsk. Most people in Norway know English.
@@bumgarner4987 We are considered to be one of the best countries to speak English, besides native speakers of course. The education system in Norway really works, and we are well established in both written form and in spoken form. It can depend from generation to generation of course. Many elderly people can't talk English to save their lives. It's more common for younger people to speak English fluently. The reason for this is because we've had English since first grade, but also because we socially active on platforms that uses English and television.
Still have a lot of studying to do before I can understand a native speaker (and I don't even want to know how long it will take to understand a drunk native that speaks with a funny accent). But at least I got how the drunk guy called the police man a "pudding".
Probably a result of the best police education in the world. Norwegian police are generally very professional at work and knows how to handle the different situations in a proper manner. It's just a big shame we "can't afford" to employee all highly skilled and newly educated officers.

How lovely to watch this short video clip in times like these. I am from Denmark, and I can't imagine Danish police being so nice. But still, no brutality. Use this video for the coming American police force. This it how the optics of policing should look like.
For anyone wondering: yes, this person does not actually sound like this, the voice has been modified. You can see this clearly at 1:35 when the voice of the cop also has been changed.
Wow, in Canada and the US, there would be 6 to 8 cops just to deal with an unarmed drunk... in the US this man probably would have been severely beaten for trying to kick. I once watched 3 police officers restrain and sit on a tiny drunk woman who could hardly walk, and there were 4 more police standing around them as backup. I see Norwegian officers are efficient with the public taxes lol.
What you have to understand is that - the difference in time taken to pass the academy aside - there's something else that is very different in Scandinavia, which weighs in a lot heavier than "just sending US cops to Norway". I'm talking about the Scandinavian infrastructure of course; you'd have to fundamentally change your system to get to a level where this would be feasible and dare I say it, adopt the dreaded socialist model. The whole point is that our systems are generally humane. No one needs to be homeless, no one needs to go hungry. This creates a base of trust in the individual, and THAT is basically why our societies thrive; because we build upon trust rather than distrust. Binds things together and leaves the individual with a notion that, say carrying a weapon in public is preposterous. Bad things happen over here, sure, but the scale is very different. Tl;dr you'd have to become socialist to achieve this.
Utrolige fine politi folk.

@@ParaWiki yes, that is true. But with a completely different threat level, wouldn't it be a wise choice to properly educate police officers? To even become a low level grunt in Norway, it's 3 years in police academy. US police are gorilla security guards by comparison.
@@ParaWiki my bad, it's supposedly 3 years in the US as well. But I do believe Norwegian police has superior education. It's two completely different environments, but there are so many thousand videos of US police officers not even trying to de-escalate situations, but end up power tripping instead. Yes, it's a mix of what they're up against on a daily basis and bad education. But I think the selection process needs to deny individuals that aren't suited. These guys carry lethal firearms and it should always be the last resort. Always. So many lives could've been spared if it wasn't for trigger happy gorillas swimming in fear every single day.
@@ParaWiki either way, things have to improve. Tragic that so many people have to die and be treated poorly before things errupt into what we see now in the US. It's almost sarcastic (not even ironic) that the protests produces so much more police brutality. It's only natural that bad things happen when it gets this heated, but it's just sad to witness. It's the perfect storm, really. Millions losing their jobs and staying at home for months due to the pandemic. But this was bound to happen. It just got turbocharged from the lockdown. George Floyd getting killed would've started riots any day. I'm just hoping the US comes out on the other end as a more mature society, though I have my doubts.

@@ChandaniAranka Mostly true. Sidearms are locked in the center console between the front seats, MP5s in the trunk. On the firing range, but also even outside Parliament (Stortinget). Where they were armed at the time because of terror threat. Norway still has police that are there to protect and serve and that makes me happy to live in norway, even if I'm a law abiding citizen it is comforting that I would be treated rightly.
MikeKay1978 Yep, the Norwegian police education is long and focuses strongly on an officers ability to protect him/herself so that he/she can act wisely so that they don't make any stupid rash desicions like hurting a civilian. They are there to protect and serve the public, it's what we pay them for, not to go around; harrasing and beating people who were minding their own buisness.
Eivind Ludviksen I doubt Syrians would change it, what will change it is the low oil price. low oil price > lower tax revenues > leads to social problems and rise in crime together with less police it will be more crime and police will like to cut corners, ut I wouldn't blame it on the Syrians. Not only that do you know why 10000 Syrians will come to Norway? Because of the civilwar there, you why they have a civilwar in Syria? Because the West decidid to support and sponsor extremist groups in Syria, so if the West are partly the cause of it then they should now do something about it like taking on refugees. Putin warned that going against Assad back in 2008 or so would lead to a destabilized region, and it seems he was right no matter his own agenda.
MikeKay1978 it's been decided that 8,000 Syrians will be taken in. Our government could help 100,000 Norwegians with the money they are going to use on those Syrians. It wasn't Norway's government that supported extremist groups, that is just false. We had nothing to do with it, so why should we have to pay? We already have a waiting list of over 5,000 immigrants, there isn't room! The reason there broke out a civil war in Syria was because of corruption in their own government, inflation, unemployment and an inefficient constitution. Their president al-Assad is also a big part of the reason why civil war broke out. The biggest problem is that if the Syrian civilians leave the country to Norway, they probably won't want to go back. This will become a problem when they are trying to rebuild Syria after the war.

@Matt Armstrong haha like cops in the US has never used tazers and physical force against drunk people walking the street before. Please educate yourself.
Training too, average training time between states in US is about 6-8 months. In nordic countries 2-3 years. Police are learned how to control situation with calm manner vs takedown aggression in US. Of course there are more guns involved, but people would lie if they have never seen US cops escalate situations to worse.
You know the cops actually handled the case rather professionally, and de-escalated the situation rather well. Good job.

@@AreHan1991 That depends on the drunkard. Not all drunkards are equally managed. In Killeen close to were I live one police officer was killed trying to de-escalate a situation.. Respect. Can we get these cops are trainers in our police academies or something? please? Cmon Norway help us out!
You're gonna have to move to a new country for that. Shit is never gonna change with police.
They are nice to you if you are nice to them. Stop being a criminal if that is a problem

I read about the Swedish Police ignoring racially motivated crimes against native blonde Swedish woman, And Sweden having the highest rape recorded crime by foreign born in in the EU.
Håkon Mo Flataker

when Norwegian cop shows use that voice deepening thing (unless that is his voice. then god help us all) that every cop show uses, it just makes the criminal sound like some Norse god or something. It's great.
Pretty sure that was a drunken northern Norway alcoholics voice... I say that as a Norwegian, so I guess "God help us all...?" :)
The show usually does use effects on people’s voices to hide their identity so people won’t recognize them
This is literally why we generally trust our police in the Nordic Countries.
MAN YOU SPOKE THE TRUTH, THIS IS WHAT AMERICAN POLICE SHOULD LEARN!

It can depend from generation to generation of course. Many elderly people can't talk English to save their lives. It's more common for younger people to speak English fluently.
The reason for this is because we've had English since first grade, but also because we socially active on platforms that uses English and television.

Most gentle police in the world. Respect☺❤
