- Join us at this ancient site as we uncover artifacts of the past. We find arrowheads and many other projectile points and I feel we are moving closer to finding something amazing.

At 05:12 I think that's an arrow shaft smoother. Once you've used the hot coals to straighten your stick you're left with a lumpy, out of round, drag inducing terrible shaft.
But with that shaped piece of sandstone you can run it up & down your shaft (Stop giggling at the back!) to make it smooth enough for flight.
Edit: Test it out. See if it still works!
I agree. I believe yours is broken and was probably larger originally. Once upon a time I found one that was also made of sandstone and had three different grooves for straightening arrow shafts. It's a great find that you don't come across very often. Congrats.
Maybe that mystery piece has something to do with arrow making? It looked like an arrow would fit right in that curved space. 🤷♂️
Not 100% but i think its an arrow/spear/atlatl shaft straightener or carving tool. Take tree branch and slide it through to trim off Uneven sides

13:38 I collect these all the time down at my hunting creek, that is a catfish barb from one of their fins. You guys got one hell of a great haul from that one spot, holy cow!
The item in question is definitely not natural. It is Bark scrapper/ arrow straightener
Some time can you show the in side of the hole you are digging in and show how you do it
Maybe the mystery stone was used to scrape the arrow shaft.

The y stone could be a firedrill stick stablizer..
Looks like a arrow groove tool....looks like an early woodland to late archaic site.
At 5:10 that's a shaft straightener, and sandstone was the best type mat'l for that type tool of course. Not 100 percent but I think it's a shaft smoother to remove the knots and nubs and all that.
How do you find these old areas to dig.
Looks like you could us it to sand down arrow shafts. That's what I'd do.
Maybe a bow straightner or a grip of sorts to hold a fire spindle, coals, maybe held with the foot, between big toe

Just subbed notifications on, I live in Citico, TN I know for a fact there was settlements here and I know where to look and what to listen for but everything is red clay should I start looking in the clay or find a new spot. I can’t do to much because everything is protected.
That thing with the fork and the place to put your thumb, is probably what they used to sand their arrows with
I know someone who had to track down all the native Americans relics from the videos . They went to all the buyer and had to return all of it . This video is proof of illegally digging and obtaining native artifacts. They declared his private property now a protected native site.
He is still doing federal time . Been in for years.

That spike lookin bone was from a catfish. Carp have similar ones but weren’t introduced until way later than what you’re findin.

I found a 50 acre camp along the Alcove river. There were 3 large hills , " mounds" involved. There was tools and points etc... Everywhere. It was clear cut and then pulverized for farm planting. The owner let me save what I could as it was cleared and plowed. Years of working the ground with machines have taken its toll. Anyway.... The lay out of the land and materials look just like what you guys have there. Congrats on a great find. Enjoy Thanks for sharing.

Mounds are illegal to dig . It's been federal law since the 30s
It's illegal to dig native sites if there is more than a couple artifacts . It's called desecration of native American sites .even on private property. Only legal places are rives and creeks . It's same amount of time as Messing with a bald eagle.
How does the digging process work I've done surface hunting but never understand how to find a good spot to dig or how deep to dig even
I've found Nutting stones some with paint stuck in the holes still and grinding stones but very few arrowheads that are complete
The tan serrated rascal in the top row would be my first pick

To be is either a Firestarter or a thrower idk wht its call but its a lead to a long stick for throwing with a more leverage or accuracy whatever it was it got broke, but to say this was used then dropped wow
Are you on a "dig" or just on your own? Is that even legal?
It's legal if you're digging on private property that 1. belongs to you, or 2. is owned by another person and you have that person's permission to dig. In Kentucky, we are supposed to also inform the state archeologist about the site but I don't know what percentage of people actually do that. Probably a low percentage I would think.

My biggest childhood loss was a coffeecan of arrowheads from the hill behind us in Iowa when we moved. I keep praying they'll show up somewhere. I have a connection to Native peoples.

Those are some great finds guys. Perfect location and out of the flood plain. I think I see now why you call it copena mountain. You all sure do find a lot of dark material. That is awesome. My family has some land on a hill in Northern Kentucky that is about to be sold. I wish I could/would have done more Indian artifact and metal detecting on the property. My great-great aunt lived on the property in a house build around 1957.
I'd love to see what is there.

I'm thinking that would be an arrow shaft sander/straightener. It looks like a tool for sure, and that U shape cutout in it would be about the right size.
That looked too smooth and purposeful to me, that definitely looked man made. I bet you're right!

My first pick was the knife that wound up being J-man's first pick, although I'll have to say that I had my eye on the black knife, second! Many worthy picks in this collection - many - but I would have to go with that large core due to its primitive look. I am amazed at the development in technology and skill represented by the difference in those two. Some have said that a bad day at the beach is better than a good day at work. Well, I'd have to add that a bad day digging is better than a good day at work! Thanks for the upload!
You can dig anywhere in that field are on that land and find artifacts because that was an indian villiage.

Killer finds brothers! I would have a very hard time with the first pick. The sock with a finger hold I would say was certainly a tool for something and the bone section at the end is almost no doubt a catfish spine, the one that always stabs the crap out of your hand. Can’t wait to see more👍🇺🇸

Yeah that one piece looks like some type of abrading stone to me, I found a similar piece not far away in a gravel bar in the same river while I was striper fishing years ago!!

The curved notch could be a graver. Used to scrape bark off of arrow shafts? Maybe?

That one funky piece......maybe a (draw knife) type tool for shaving arrow shafts to symmetry?
Or it could be used when the shaft of an arrow is heated the item could be used as a straightener tool for fine tuning. Just a guess. Nice finds.
