Met Jan in 2022 on my way back home from the final stage of the Tour de France in Paris. When I first passed and recognised him, I was so shocked, I couldn't believe my childhood hero was just sitting there. I was unsure whether or not I should bother him, or rather let him live his life in peace. When I got off the train, I decided to at least ask him for a picture and we had a short conversation. He is such a modest, down to earth guy, he remains a hero for me.
God, as a teen, watching these Tours each holiday after school in Germany, i HATED Lance so much, cheering each and every year for Jan sitting in front of the TV. Now i absolutely LOVE to see this friendship. Truly inspiring. Willkommen zurück im Leben, Jan - you're a true fighter and a legend. Thanks a lot to Lance, George, Johan, JB and the whole WEDU Team
Back in those years, I had the idea of turning the TdF into a scripted reality show, "Big Time Cycling" 😂 They would produce a European version of the TdF in which Jan would best the then much reviled Lance in much of Europe. And, concurrently air a North American version in which Jan was cast as the "evil German" and Lance would heroically prevail 🇺🇸💪🏻
I was also a teen but watching from US. I never even rode bikes but was absolutely gripped by the drama this rivalry generated. It was such a golden time period and inspired me to train in another sport. I am so thankful for both Jan & Lance and unsung warriors on their teams who lead us on such a journey.
Even though I love Lance now, I always cheered for Jan, what an amazing rider and person! It’s also a situation when one guy is so dominant like Lance was, you want the underdogs to come from behind.
I’m German and my first Tour was 1997 and have been hooked on Jan ever since. The rivalry was quite a bitter one from our perspective but it was still captivating. And 2003 felt like the culmination of all cycling gods coming together for Jan, and then that tragic rainy day. Then we had the tough times of cycling and all the revelations. But Lance always had that aura around him. I’d rather not be his enemy but you have to respect his belief and passion for the sport. And the friendship between him and Jan is just amazing. I think thanks to Lance, Jan Ullrich has an image in the US that we Germans could not possibly imagine. Here, the people love him, but the press does not. I am glad he found this connection. And let’s not forget the passion from Johan and George either. Thanks guys!!!
Right on buddy 👍 stats and figures can be erased, but history can't and it's definitely history.... And there's TH-cam videos of all these races that prove it
Iam also German (schöne Grüße) and 97 i was in the Alsace watching the tour and then we rode the stage vice versa.. Later I heard that Jan then had a bad day.

As a huge cycling fan who has suffered tremendously myself with mental health and addiction problems, I can say that more sports heroes need to have the courage to let their fans know what s going on. You were an inspiration to me more than you could ever know. The rivalry between you and Lance piqued my fascination with the idea of pushing my body to the extreme limit that has culminated in a very beautiful and rewarding life hiking and climbing in the mountains. You may have saved my life by being so awesome. You're a great man and you taught me how to suffer like a man through my TV set. Keep riding and keep yourself in this happy state, man. You're an international treasure. Thank you for everything!
My favorite podcast ever. Listening through tears and laughter. These men have a bond that will never be broken. Seeing Jan so healthy and happy makes everything right in our crazy, tumultuous world. Please do this every year after your camp.
As a cycling fan, it was a special treat to listen to the men who rode the race and their thoughts and feelings during the time. Also, the respect they have for each other is great to see.
Jan is a hero for so many of us. My childhood revolved around watching him every July. The press constantly took shots at him and tried to pull him down. To see him happy and healthy now brings tears of happiness to my eyes.

Jan proves he is a TRUE champion...he would NEVER want to win while Lance was crashed or some other way...only TRUE competitors and champions have this mind set... so glad these guys do this every year....
Jan is truly a class act at the highest level. I've never seen this level of sportsmanship before and since then. I couldn't believe he did that. Jan is one of the GOAT's, without question.
You guys are the ones in the first TdF memories I have as a child, so hearing you talk about those is gold to my ears. Thank you very much for sharing with us! So glad all of you are doing well after all these years. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Wow thank you so much for this! The Jan-Lance thing is my favorite rivalry in all sports. The cocky a-hole versus the big hearted tank who wouldn't give up. Love you guys, it's a real joy to see your friendship now.

It's also amazing to see how well Jan is doing and it's so clear you all mean so much to each other.
So much respect for these guys. All class acts! Great to see them back together and supporting each other after all these years. Thanks for the memories guys.
I remember following the 2003 Tour de France as if it was yesterday (Jan in the Bianchi Türkis/turquois). Great flashbacks and memories come back of this summer. Like a little time jump. Great times. Thanks for the insights 👌
Great to see you guys together. Uncommon to see rivals becoming friends and having a good time. Real leaders with personalities! Would be pleased to see more of Jan, Lance George together.
Watching the Tour de France when these 2 were rivals was a treat. To have them seated side by side talking and explaining what happened in those momentous stages is priceless. Jan is a total gentleman and Lance has evolved quite a bit but still has that a-hole jerk side that has not gone away! He is a champ though!
I think, like many of my vintage, cycling Australians have a fond place in their heart for Jan as he came here very early in his career and raced here several times. I've read and I think L.A has said, Jan's one of the most gifted cyclists who's ever raced and a great competitor. And who doesn't enjoy reliving their great battles on TH-cam? I think Jan suffered more than most from the TdF scandals especially in his home country so I'm stoked to see him here, smiling and hopefully well. And continues to remain so. Jan always seemed like a nice human being, to me anyway, so wish him only the best.
Its so cool seeing these guys back together. My favorite aspect of tyler's book was listening about the comraderie and relationships between the teams and riders on the peloton. I came away from it intrigued by their lifestyle and to see how well they know each other even after all these years its cool. There's no other sport like cycling. Im happy to see how much this channel has grown and look forward to see more 🙂
Take note Tour De France broadcast team…. This is what people want to see and hear! Great conversation Jan and Lance! Some of the other conversations that may come could be those that were in opposition to Lance..I know, I know tough conversations, but may be healing for all to just lay the cards on the table to talk about that time from the competition level. Thanks again for bringing even more context to that time in cycling.
Thank you all who made this podcast possible. Most of all it is great to see Jan is doing great. Been a fan of Jan since finishing second in the 96 tour to his teammate B.Riis. Thank you Lance, George, Johan and especially Jan for sharing these amazing stories. A.G
This is one of the best shows you guys have done. It was because of Lance and Jan that I really got super enthusiastic about riding. I was 37 at the time. Thanks guys.
Lance inspired so many people, like myself, over the years to keep on cycling. These back stories are so fascinating bringing back those memories of the races we all saw. Jan was a stunning rider of his time and his rivalry with Lance was gripping. By looking back we all realise how stupid we were, and its great to see former rivals laughing and recalling those incredible moments. Liebe Grüße aus Mailand Jan!
The best thing that came out of Lance's coup de grâce is thos podcast. I remember watching these tours on Outdoor Life Network. I was either on my bike or using but either way I was glued to these tours and they really marked important moments in my 20's. It's cool to see the band back together. You should bring Jan on to comment on races from time-to-time.
I have great memories of these 3 riders and for that I must thank them all. Lance has helped so many people thru Livestrong and for that i am ever grateful and cannot be taken from him.
Great experiencing those races from afar but live, I recall each of those moments in those races with you road warriors. I had recently started racing myself and remember meeting Jan briefly in Cape Town although I was always a Lance and George fan Jan was also amongst the gods of cycling, thank you all for keeping it alive.
I so hope in 20 years we get to see two things. These guys riding bikes together and two guys named Matthieu an Wout having these kind of conversations.Imagine the stories those guys can tell about their fights.
Lance's lack of fear of anything has always amazed me. He fears nothing but maybe himself. He seemingly has no fear of any man or woman, disease, God, obstacle or situation. He's always been the center of his universe and little else matters. EPO or not, his rides in TDF were, by far, the most entertaining of any tours.
In 2005 I flew to France from South Africa just to watch the final day of the Tour de France. Thank you Lance and Jan for all the memories. And for The Move podcast keeping the memories alive. Best cycling podcast show in the world.
I love this behind the scenes stuff. Watching the race you never got a sense of any of this colorful backstory. Thanks for sharing. The story about Jan speaking at the celebration dinner is so important to hear from the people who lived it and did it.
As a kid I watched your duels on the TDF, I’ll never forget the insane time trial of Lance, when he destroyed Ulrich. ❤ I love cycling thanks to you guys. It was until 2022-2023 tdf when I experienced a true battle in the TDF, as you did back on your primes. Greetings from 🇲🇽
Johan is brilliant in his grasp of the past, the people involved, the tactics, the politics, etc. Nice show, and glad Jan participated with his perspective. My favorite thing is the folks calling Lance prosperous ::)
Jan and Lance made cycling what it is today. They popularised it and helped it grow in many ways. You guys are the best!!! Thank you!!! I always have special memories watching from those years.
Wow, this episode brought back so many childhood memories. As a young boy, I saw Jan the Kaiser for the first time, in 1998.. I really thought or believed he was not human but a German robot. Got my first bike and started riding back in a small Caribbean island when nobody was even riding. I use to ride by myself all the time as a young kid. But the rivalry was real to me. When Jan fell off the bike in the last stage time trial I started crying, a grown ass man .. LOL that’s how good cycling was back in the day. People can say all they want about Lance but his present actions speak louder than anything else. Good to see everyone together enjoying life and healthy. I know everyone probably remembers classic Jan Telekom colors T-mobile pink. But he looked better than ever ..fit as FK in the bianchi celeste suit. Fantastico el episode!
I freaking love those guys. Jan Ullrich is the reason I started on my bike. Lance is the second reason. And Johan is such a smart and eloquent character. What a luck to have him on your team.
You guys are fantastic ,thank you very much for all you done to cycling, those years in the end of 90 and years ahead were some of the best years in cycling. Those batles in the Alpes and Pirinees were just amazing.👍💪
As a french, I'm so ashamed that our sport "authorities" did smear such champions. I am instead so proud, that those guys, who won EVERYTHING, who know better than anybody what pain, effort, perseverance, rivalry, and so much more, means, are so moved by the Tour. Thank you gentlemen for sharing these incomparable moments with us ❤
A truly amazing conversation for sports history, cycling, sportsmanship, and especially for those who followed Jan and Lance's epic battles during those many years. I too have Hühnerhaut (chicken skin).
Amazing stories! Glad to see everyone enjoying each others company. Like Borg and McEnroe in tennis-it was great to see two rivals from different backgrounds as friends supporting each other.Humanity and sportsmanship.
I remember watching these revival’s battle for years at that time I had no idea what it really took for all of you to do this at that level. Myself,Son and 3 Grandsons have made a life together racing and riding moto&supercross in California but the inspiration to do what you love came from true Champions like you gentleman! GOD BLESS YOU ❤🙏
it's amazing to see these guys relaying the stories from the days. I loved those days of racing between them. Great to see them all good friends. Awesome viewing.
2001 and 2003 Tours were two of the best that I remember. Lance dropped Jan multiple times in 2001, Jan went off the side of the mountain of the downhill and Lance waited, only to drop him later. Then 2003, Jan almost had him but crashed on the slick roads in the final ITT, sliding into the protective bails. Some epic battles those years.
Its very nice to see and watch Lance and Jan talk about inside thoughts about those races , the rivalries they encountered . I really feel that it is Jan the reason why Lance become very famous . I still watch the Tour de France until now , but the time of Armstrong and Ulrich is the time I can never forget and until now I still watch the videos of their races at you tube...
Guys, this is very-very-very great! It's important to have something of passion in life. Jan & Lance absolutely have it! The techniques of cycling of the two were fantastic. It takes a lot to learn it. One can't just take doping and being the greatest bicycle rider of the world. Lance's and Jan's characters are different. Lance always wants to win - whatever it takes. He has killer instinct. Jan is also a champion, but often not determined enough.
This meeting with Jan Ulrich was great to see. I wish other Tour winners would do this kind of videos. I watch every of those tours I enjoyed o lot. Great Job
I can only compare this here in the U.S. to the rivalry of Bird and Magic in the NBA of the 80's and early 90's. They were fierce rivals on the court and over time they developed a mutual respect that turned into a great friendship after their playing days were done. Here I see the same thing. Rivals hell bent on winning. No love lost. Through some tough times, they come together and realize that there is more in life than simply wins and losses. Now we see a great relationship and respect for each others abilities and accomplishments. Kudos to all of you for burying the hatchet so to speak and coming together for the greater good.
Jan was and is my favorite rider and I always rooted for him. Love to see you all together talking about the Tour. Love to meet him and maybe ride in Mallorca :) or Iceland :)
This is really great these two sporting rivals who I used to watch become great friends we need more of this in the world at the moment big respect to them 👍👌🇺🇸🇩🇪
Makes me super happy to see Jan looking well. He's always been a monster figure from that era and always seemed to be such a great guy. This just confirms it. Viva la Ullrich. Great to hear 4 guys just story telling and seeing former rivals, now friends, laughing with one another.

So good to see you in good shape, Jan Ulrich, you were my favourite, espacially in that fantastic Biachi outfit. Keep up the courage, Jan. You are strong by being there. It's life and only life after all. We all looked up to you to beat the beast. But as a person, you have beaten more mountains than he has
It brings back a lot of memories. I was riding as a young man and go win a race come back home and watch this very titans offer us a wonderfull and epic battle. Dope you will say. True, but even with dope they traines so hard to get this level of performance. And Jan was my absolute hero. And still is. No matter what. Cheers from an unknown frenchman.
I loved reading about these guys antics in David Walsh’s book. Or watching Lance being so kind and generous to Paul Kimmage at the 2009 Tour of California press conference. Redefines GOAT, just in totally the wrong way…
That Podcast bought back wonderful memories of those tours. I was a triathlete learning how to ride and here were my heroes racing at their absolute best. i love that George can give other insights that just expand the story. I'd love to ride the Georges event just to be on the road with the 3 of you. Time to get fit and work out how to get there from Australia.

I so hope in 20 years we get to see two things. These guys riding bikes together and two guys named Matthieu an Wout having these kind of conversations.Imagine the stories those guys can tell about their fights.
vdP and WvA is not really a rivalry. It could have been, but vdP is leaps and bounds ahead of WvA now. It’s more vdP and Pogacar now.
@@Shantiante you do realize MvdP and WvA hav been rivals ever since they started riding bikes.
Nah I Hope its going to be vingegaard and pogacar
I absolutely love Jan, what a wonderful meeting of the greats!
Great podcast btw…. This one was a long time coming…..thanks again for those years of exciting competition from you three….
Absolute legends, and an era of absolute best cycling moments that are forever cherished.
No they weren't. They were fuelled by drugs and bullying.
No way, as I remember those Tours were among the most boring ones. His team was just controlling the race and most of the excitement was gone..
no fear of needles
Yeah Johan is a great storyteller!
Jan and Lance made cycling what it is today. They popularised it and helped it grow in many ways. You guys are the best!!! Thank you!!! I always have special memories watching from those years.
Jan and Lance got me into cycling and racing. Love this
Also into EPO?
Great to see Jan looking so well and in a good place.👍👍
Thank you all for sharing... I am proud Jan, Johan, George and Lance. Good old times. Growing in life does not come easy. Believe me.
There are many things I admire of Lance. Biggest one: how he values his friendships and respects his friends.
As long as they were onboard and didn't questioned his ethics.
@@Nyelandsfriendship works both ways.
Lol "friendship". Aka partnership

Thank you all so much for doing this for all of us!! I very much enjoyed the insights and stories!!!
And I’m so happy to that Jan is doing so well!
What a treat. I can’t think of a better rivalry in sport, and what a privilege to relive and hear new parts of it 20 years later.
I'm happy you all got together like this and shared your memories and your thoughts.Thank you!
Thank you gentlemen for sharing these incomparable moments with us ❤
So nice to hear these stories and to have another Jan session from Mallorca !
Wow. What a gift. Thank you for this. Great to see Jan and hear the stories. Best cycling interview in years.
I feel so much love for Jan. What an incredible spirit. A great sit down, keep them coming.
A truly amazing conversation for sports history, cycling, sportsmanship, and especially for those who followed Jan and Lance's epic battles during those many years. I too have Hühnerhaut (chicken skin).
Classic, love that era of cycling, you guys are the reason I picked up cycling 🤙
Amazing stories! Glad to see everyone enjoying each others company. Like Borg and McEnroe in tennis-it was great to see two rivals from different backgrounds as friends supporting each other.Humanity and sportsmanship.
Jan Ullrich ,,, He has always seemed so likeable ,,,,I like him ... Regards, a Danish cycling fan
So much great memories with this Guys and i love it to see them now in this friendship. I wish you all the best. 💛
Thanks guys such great content and how great Lance is to reaching out to Jan, great memories of these two rivals
A Band of Brothers. Huge respect. Awesome podcast.
So good to see Jan doing well and looking so healthy and happy! One of my all time favorite athletes on earth. Really cool discussion.
This meeting with Jan Ulrich was great to see. I wish other Tour winners would do this kind of videos. I watch every of those tours I enjoyed o lot. Great Job
I really look forward to the Jan documentary, I hope there is an English version or version with subtitles 👍
Kudos to all of you for burying the hatchet so to speak and coming together for the greater good.
nice to see all of you guys together in-person 🤝
Great podcast. Great to see what good friend Jan and Lance are now and the respect they have for each other.
Jan was and is my favorite rider and I always rooted for him. Love to see you all together talking about the Tour. Love to meet him and maybe ride in Mallorca :) or Iceland :)
Thanks to all involved in this video. Really uplifting, great to see Jan doing well and the vibe you all have together
This is really great these two sporting rivals who I used to watch become great friends we need more of this in the world at the moment big respect to them 👍👌🇺🇸🇩🇪
Thank you so much for this guys.
You all are super stars , so much respect for all of you.
Lance ❤ from 🇮🇳 .
What a pleasure to see you all together! Great podcast!
Makes me super happy to see Jan looking well. He's always been a monster figure from that era and always seemed to be such a great guy. This just confirms it. Viva la Ullrich.
Great to hear 4 guys just story telling and seeing former rivals, now friends, laughing with one another.
One of my favourite videos from TH-cam EVER! I watched almost the TdFs from 1987-2013 so great to catch up with my heroes after all this time. ❤❤❤ (I think I missed 1993-97).
Great watch to see them united and talking about their past. Champs!
So good to see you in good shape, Jan Ulrich, you were my favourite, espacially in that fantastic Biachi outfit. Keep up the courage, Jan. You are strong by being there. It's life and only life after all. We all looked up to you to beat the beast. But as a person, you have beaten more mountains than he has
I absolutely loved this conversation of stories and memories. As others have said "All class acts". Good luck to all!
Ulrich is so sweet what a kind person, all the best for him.
Don't be naiv...He molested his wife...was a cheater,a drunk and drugaddict....So not a hero at all....
This was a soul stirring and deeply enjoyable conversation to observe. Keep doing this!
One of the greatest rivalries in any sport. It was a golden era.
this was a pure gem, thanks for making it happen
Jan seems like such a genuinely good person. I truly wish him all the best that life has left to offer him.
Redefines GOAT, just in totally the wrong way…
Greatest doper of all time
That Podcast bought back wonderful memories of those tours. I was a triathlete learning how to ride and here were my heroes racing at their absolute best. i love that George can give other insights that just expand the story. I'd love to ride the Georges event just to be on the road with the 3 of you. Time to get fit and work out how to get there from Australia.
Four greats just reminiscing about the good old days. So cool!
We love you Jan!
