Single and Double Stop Alternation - Technique Lesson

  • FiddleHed is the fun way to learn fiddling online!
These exercises will help you alternate easily between single and double stops. This way you can start to use double stops as accents and create interesting textures as opposed to a constant drone (which sounds good too!)
    The basic exercise is:
    D0-0-(D0|A0)-(D0|A0)
Actually the most basic way to do it is
    D0-(D0|A0)
but the first way is a little easier I think.
You can then try to this with fingers like
    D1-1-(D1|A0)-(D1|A0)
    then try with other fingers.
When you can do each finger on the D string, try to alternate between fingers:
    D0-0-(D0|A0)-(D0|A0)-D1-1-(D1|A0)-(D1|A0)
You can also play the single note on the A string:
    A0-0-(D0|A0)-(D0|A0)
And then try it with the fingers on A string.
Eventually work up to doing scales this way.
Then try other string pairs: G&D, A&E.
    Then try adding rhythms.
    Hoedown and triplets: (D0|A0)-D0-0-(D1|A0)-D1-1
I made some “Learning Chunks” on the FiddleHed site to help you do this. These focused exercises contain sheet music, tabs and mp3 snippets to guide you on each step of your fiddle journey.
These and all new lesson pages can be viewed for one week after publication with a FREE trial membership. Check it out here: fiddlehed.com
And after you sign up, I’ll also send you a mini-course of lessons specially designed for your skill level.
Alrighty. Play every day, have fun 😀 and thanks for making music 🙏
    Now, go fiddle with it...

Just had a big "ah hah" moment at the end of the video. Watching and playing through the ideas for the "n th" time. Thanks for looping the beginning of Arkansas Traveller - I now "get," the 2 feel pulse. I'm going to be driving everyone nuts playing if endlessly! 2 and four pulses groove much better than constant droning .

This is EXACTLY what I needed. Lessons on droning don't talk about this technique, which totally the thing that makes bluegrass fiddling sound so cool. Thanks!

You're welcome! Glad you found the video. I started a subscriber site at fiddlehed.com last year. The TH-cam lessons will continue to be available but the site has guided lessons with tabs, play alongs, etc. You can have free access to the site for the forum, blog, request list and the first few beginner lessons. There is also a Fiddlehed Facebook page. Let me repeat, the free TH-cam videos (hundreds of them) will still be out there but depending on what your goals are, you might find the site helpful. Keep playing! Cheers.

You answered the question of "when" to play double stops.in the past, I've gotten vague answers from people like "just feel it". You're method creates a great pulsing old timey sound. Not exactly easy being rhythmically challenged, so I'm starting slowly with a metronome, but somewhere to start and so much better than winging it or droning the whole time.

So thank you so much for this jam packed lesson, there's a lot to work with there, but if one sticks to it, it can be a game changer in one's sound.

double stops is my nemesis, but I think this may make it possible for me to accomplish... I'll see. I do know playing a fiddle with single stops only is a little like going on a slid at the playground. double stops is more like the Screaming Eagle at Six Flags. I'll comment again if it works.

    • @fiddl3hed

Aruna, keep at it. Trust me, it will get easier. If you start feeling frustrated, put them on the back burner but come back to them. Pick the easiest one and just do one in the tune. Then add another one. You don't have to learn this in a week. Take your time. Those double stops are worth it and they will start to sound better.

Wow you Luckies! I have been practicing double stops everyday since November for as long as I can stand the screeching. Now January and I am screeching less. I have not tried any songs except bolim cabbage down. If you think you're having trouble just think of me, old pork chop fingers. With apparently, less evolved hands, I question my opposable thumbs as well. Anything is possible, including double stops. Even if, like me, you have the hands of a neanderthal.

How do you keep your finger from touching the A string when playing scale on D string?

    • @jillspangler5139
      @jillspangler5139 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I push the D string toward the G when I push down. I've got pork chop fingers. I don't know if it's technically correct, but, it's better than duct tape.
