  • Gallbladder and biliary diseases made easy! Learn cholelithiasis vs cholecystitis vs choledocholithiasis vs cholangitis. Great for nursing and medical students, all healthcare students or workers, and USMLE!
Easily learn gallbladder disease definitions, pronunciation, anatomy, pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.
Cholelithiasis is the formation of gallstones, usually in the gallbladder. Gallstones can occasionally lead to biliary colic or gallbladder attack. Symptoms include gallbladder pain causing right upper quadrant abdominal pain. Diagnosis includes a right upper quadrant ultrasound, and treatment may include gallbladder removal called cholecystectomy.
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, typically from a gallstone in the cystic duct leading to obstruction. Cholecystitis symptoms include abdominal pain, fevers, nausea and vomiting. Cholecystitis may have a positive Murphy sign. Treatment is usually surgery.
Choledocholithiasis is a gallstone in the common bile duct. Learn the gallbladder and biliary anatomy in this video to see that choledocholithiasis can cause obstruction to both the gallbladder and liver. ERCP or MRCP may be necessary for diagnosis. Choledocholithiasis treatment is usually with ERCP.
Cholangitis is inflammation of the biliary tree, usually from a gallstone in the common bile duct leading to obstruction. May have Charcot triad of fever, right upper quadrant abdominal pain, and jaundice. May also see Reynold's pentad of fever, right upper quadrant abdominal pain, jaundice, hypotension, and altered mental status. Cholangitis diagnosis is with ultrasound, ERCP, or MRCP. Cholangitis treatment includes ERCP, cholecystectomy, and antibiotics.

Great video, thank you very much. Question. Can't the prescription also be to determine the root cause of elevation levels of (salt, bilirubin, cholesterol, bile), then remove the stones with either medication, shock waves, or procedural surgery followed with a change in diet (with root cause foods avoided), and a later ultrasound to determine whether stones have reformed - instead of removing the Gallbladder? Thanks again.

This was one of the most informative videos i've seen thus far...I have had my gallbladder out 37 years ago but still get colic attacks a few times a year....I have had blood works and endoscopy just last friday which all seem normal. What could be the cause of these symptoms which cause me extreme pain exactly the same as when i had my gallbladder (obstruction)? Any clues as to what would be the next test other than getting to a hospital during an attack? I really appreciate any advice . Thank you!

Thank you for pointing that out. That statement refers to how gallstones can intermittently obstruct the cystic duct in those with cholelithiasis to cause biliary colic. Otherwise, the term cholelithiasis generally refers to the presence of gallstones in the gallbladder. The point that was trying to be made was the difference in location of the stone for choledocholithiasis, which refers to a stone in the CBD. Hope that helps clarify that part of the video!
