Even after almost 40 years, still the most legendary scene in history of British television drama series.
Well one of the most. Still very iconic
I’m a Corrie fan but I’d agree with this. Absolute zenith of British soap
Since 2025.
"Happy Christmas Ange" that has to go down as one of the best lines in a soap EVER!
Along with, YOU AINT MY MOTHER!!
@@awesomesauce2000YES I AM
I swear those boxes of crisps have been there against the stairs since the opening episode in 1984 and are still there today, even AFTER the Vic Burnt down lol.. Same boxes, I'm sure of it haha....
hahaha that's funny.
Still here now
1985
85
Must be pretty stale.
Just love the nostalgia of it all. Things looked so much simpler back then.
That smug smile that says " I can't wait for the moment I can unravel your web of lies and disorganise your life in general hehehe"
They were.
@@bsaunders5271No, they weren't. You forget the bad times and the difficulties.
@@Ben6164they were .
@@SarahWynn-k9r Because you don't remember the bad times. The 80s, especially the early-to-mid 80s, were horrible - especially for contemporary youth!! The country was broken even though it was on the way to being fixed!! Totally broken.
32million watched this! The most famous soap scene in history!
The most famous acting scene in British history, it still holds the record.
Pure Xmas Eastenders classic dialogue!!
“This my sweet is a letter from my solicitor telling you that your husband has filed a petition for divorce. It also tells you to get yourself a solicitor pretty damn quick. ‘Appy Christmas 🎄 Ange!”
Oh wow ,Yeah the late Leslie Grantham did well here in this episode ,Oh dear the look on Angie's face when he gives her the letter ,Bloody iconic now since EastEnders broadcast originally back in February 19th 1985 ,This Christmas 1986 Episode is still memorable as I prefer these times with the Den and Angie years from 1985 to 1989 when they were the original Proprietars of the Queen Vic . Remember also the episode in Venice on the orient express,Was like Duf duf duf Everytime .Before Laptops and Hand held Mobile phones,The Chunky Brick being the fashion status with a big Ariel was the new kid on the Block for Mobile phones in the 1980s with a Charger the size of a Brief case 🤣🤣🤣🤣
wow, look how young pat and dot are in this.....
And Pauline.
...and Kathy lol
Still dressed up like mutton
There all gone now, even Dots left, there are Ian Sharon and Kathy but mainly younger characters. I’m only 23 but miss the likes of Pat and Peggy.

That was back in the days when EastEnders was really good and worth watching.
It was decent in the 00’s aswell. I stopped watching it in 2016. It became stale and boring. Dull characters and dull storylines.
@@underneonloneliness2 poor through most of the 00s.
@@tomhiggins6542 How? I found it great as a kid.
@@underneonloneliness2 characters wasn't as strong, dialogue was clunkier, bizarre direction, stories became more OTT. Show was frequently making front page headlines for its declining viewers and poor quality around 2003/4, helped less by the hot form of Coronation Street.
@@tomhiggins6542 2005 for me was the highlight year of Eastenders when you had all the London gangsters in it. Eastenders is terrible now compared to them days. Haven’t watched it properly since 2016.
One of the most iconic British TV moments ever.
the most classic soap christmas lines
...and then he went on to marry a murderer, his murderer. He didn't know he had it so lucky with Angie.
+David Lee they have a few on the bbc store but they're about £1.98 each
Nobody getting hit by a car. No explosions. No stupid over the top plot gimmicks. Just characters in conflict. The current producers of *Eastenders* should be ashamed of themselves.
I’ve stopped watching current eastenders because it’s shite! I’ve gone back to watching old eastenders
Mel Owens got hit by a lorry
Current EastEnders is fab!
@GDT2003 nope. I was around for the very first episode.
Best book I read on the decline of Eastenders was Garry Bushell's 1,001 Reasons Eastenders is Pony. Despite the title, Bushell was a big fan of the soap's 80's and 90's heyday, he loved Den and Angie, he loved Sharongate, and to him the last great storyline was the Kat and Zoe revelation. Basically his book details how even though the 90's was a great period for the soap, even then it was beginning to become more 'issue-driven', which in the 2000's started to take precedence over quality and believable characterization, to the point it just became a miserable watch.
Had to comeback after tonight's episode just to see how close it was to the original
When was this? Mid-late 80s?
RIP Leslie, you will always be remembered for this scene! X
The classic of classics. The beginning of something juicy always happening at Christmas! This was the one that started it all, and Christmas was never the same again in Walford.
I think this would have been when I was living in Boston USA ' like 85-90 period ' not sure if it begun before or after I left cos I don 't think I recall EE when I lived in London ' but would have started about the same year I went ' like Spring 85 if memory serves right.
This was watched by 30 million.. in a time where we still had shared experiences on that scale.
A fine scene. Dirty Den was a consummate villain. There aren't any like him. RIP Leslie Grantham
Now this was when Christmas Day telly was worth watching
RIP Leslie. Great character Den was and such a great actor
And 35 years later Linda decides ( drunkenly) she’s gonna divorce Mick Carter in the Exactly the same place as Den And Angie oh the irony Xx 👀
@Gilson Serafim how much are you charging?
I miss those days of sweaters and dresses with shoulder pads. The show at this time was the best. I used to watch it on 'British Friday Nights on the PBS channel here in Los Angeles, right after Are You Being Served?
I remember watching at the time .. classic !
RIP Leslie Grantham
The most watched episode of ANY soap and one of the most watched TV programmes of all time
There was only 4 channels
@@rick182zso ? What he said was right
I actually met leslie grantham way back in 1996 it was nice to have spoken to him he was polite I rember then I saw him again and he winked the second time was nice to have met him twice.
i think leslie grantham may have narcissistic personality traits or full-blown Npd, he does have the tendency to minimize his past wrongdroings( felix reese' murder is the first exhibit with that history he came up with when he was arrested) and to try to deflect away from what might embarass him by claiming for example it was his intention to leave and that he was not axed from eastenders after his webcam scandal.
Who else is here because of the news of Grantham's death?
The poor taxi Driver he murdered isnt
Full episodes of Classic EastEnders are currently on weekdays on Drama and available on UKTV Play - uktvplay.co.uk
Den is the best soap character EVER. Fact
I think it was a lazy move to kill him off again.
RIP Leslie Grantham. A brilliant actor playing a brilliant character. Dirty Den Watts - a legend.
also a killer
RIP Dirty Den great actor 😢
The Best Moment in British TV .......EVER
After getting killed in 1989, Den secretly moved to France and changed his name to Boyard.
Greg Palmer Spain actually
Super Sonic The joke went way over your head.
And now he is dead.
Gaming 1776 Wish they hadn't brought him back really. A farcical storyline. This time in the 80s was the best era.
Greg Palmer yes he was shite in that also, terrible actor, rip, den Watts and boyard
When someone says to you “ can I have a word”. Just run for the hills . You just know it’s going to be really bad
RIP Dirty Den. Always loved your phenomenal performance as the aforementioned character in EastEnders (back when the programme was actually worth watching) and as the evil master of the fort in Fort Boyard. You shall be missed. :-(
One word .............. (Iconic)
I compared this set with the one they're using in 2020. The light switches at the bottom of the stairs aren't there now. And the space between the bannister and the arch leading to the bar (where the crisp boxes are stacked) is narrower now. And even that arch looks narrower now. Come on, when rebuilding a set it should be the same dimensions as the previous set.
Phillip Willoughby well the vic did burn down...
"'Appy Christmas Ange"
Appy Christmas Ange! Brilliant
I remember staying up late watching this I must of been 5 years old . The 80s were the best times especially Christmas time ❤
Angie's face when Den shows her the divorce papers all I can say is good one Den, now please return
Leslie Grantham is dead
@@LogoMan7777i know he is but he'll always be known as Dirty Den or the first boyard in fort boyard
Wow 37 years,Still an iconic Episode along with the Episode starring only Anita Dobson as Angie and Leslie Grantham as Dirty Den that broadcast in 1986 on BBC1 .Was only 13 when I watched these episodes ever since EastEnders broadcast on February 19th 1985 ,Love the Classic 1980s Episodes from the Den and Angie years was worth watching, Nowadays god only knows who is in it ,Along with Originals Letitia Dean as Sharon and Adam Woodyatt as Ian to Cathy beal played by Gillian Taylforth .
wow look how young half of them are
Dot was already in her 60's lol
Iconic scene played with anger
Rip Leslie Grantham 💚
This was when I loved Eastenders.I have not watched it for at least ten years. I can't stand it now.
piledriverpotter agree. I loved it in this era but can not abide it now.
I never could ' just stuck it out.
Happy Christmas Ange!
This scene wasnt overly dramatic and unrealistic like how scenes in EastEnders are nowadays and is still the most memorable.
This is one of TV purest gold bits of tv I missed this I'm 90s kid but ang was one of the best actresses ever
Pat Butcher looks fairly fit in this clip
Well it was 28 years ago
Quality storylines and acting. The absolute state of the show now is embarrassing.
It happened again.
25th December, 1986!!
"Appy Christmas, Ange"
I know someone who divorced at Christmas lol.
the classic christmas episode
Thanks for posting this early EastEnders! Here in the U.S. we can't watch episodes on the main web site.
In God knows how many decades, no one's redecorated that hall behind the bar?!
Dot sure as hell hasnt changed. ;P
came here after watching the iconic episodes on BBC One yesterday
Possibly the most famous moment of eastenders history. Can anyone else think of a more memorable moment?
Great xmas present a divorce lol
Can anyone honestly say that they blame him for doing this after finding out about a lie of this magnitude?
Still amazes me that Leslie shot and killed a man in his youth, serving time. And then hired by the BBC.
They seem to have a lot of cast members with dumpster fire personal lives.
Those prices at 1:03 are ridiculous! 63p for a vodka? 49p for a light ale?!
Bend Sinister compared to today’s prices that’s cheap
Amazing what inflation does
Aye back then a week wages were 100 pound a week
@@robertjack9949 100 a week ? That was today's equivalent of £400 to £500 a week. The average wage then was about £30-£50 a week. Inflation 30 years ago would make that price around the same as today's prices with inflation rates. In another 30 years £1000 a week will be seen as an average wage. Scary times for us all.
Ahhh! You could take your girlfriend to the cinema, have a drink after wards, fish and chips and then the bus home and still have change from 50p, back then.
dirty den would be a great bond
Cor this takes me back to my childhood xx
Was in America at this time ' 85-90 ' from all accounts EE would have started the same year ' I left tho not sure when ' don 't recall it ' only Crossroads and Corrie I remember watching growing up ' Brookside was the latest soap ' which I never took to ' just a couple of years running at that point.
02:45 Happy Christmas Ange
Lol how times have changed since than. This aired 5 years before I was born.
This is going to be Sharon to Ian on Christmas Day 2020 mark my word!
Sharon and Ian got married?
I used to watch this on channel 21 WLIW. I think I was addicted. then it went to chanel 31 WNYC. having no cable TV, I miss it a bit!
What song is that in the background? Sounds really familiar but I can't place it
R.I.P Leslie Grantham
My goodness. I'm from Barcelona, the catalan public tv (that started its broadcasts in 1983) broadcasted "Eastenders" dubbed to catalan from 1987 (I was 8 at the time) or close. At that time we only had the public spanish tv (with 2 channels), so "Eastenders" had a big, almost huge impact here. 20 years later I still remember that episode and thanks to youtube I can see it with its original voices
Who else is watchin durin December 2020? 🙋🏻♀️
Leslie Michael Grantham 30/04/1947 - 15/06/2018 RIP
Who can forget that scene happy christmas ange 😕😆
Look at the old days the best episodes
The real old days ' not the noughties or late 90s even ' the middle 80s.
I was 3 when this aired
I was 9 months old lol now I'm 30 and happily engaged :D
Im happy for you
I was 1 to young back then my mother watched this
back then eastenders was good now it's rubbish
Chris Dawson Yep
2:16 The exact similarity scene with Linda filing divorce against Mick while drunk.
Well said. People need to look into the context re. such high viewing figures. Bearing also in mind there wasn't much variety in storylines that we have today,
Scenes like this were pretty progressive for the time.
The era of Thatcherism eg.
R.I.P. Leslie Grantham!!
this one was from the year i was born. had to check it out!!
probably the best Christmas present she will ever get.
30 million people watched this in 1986.
Den: Got divorce papers? My wife faked terminal illness, and I learned about her ruse while I was on vacation. I hired a solicitor to file for divorce! I am getting my wife the worse Christmas of her life!
after they got divorced, angie married some gutiarist in some british rock band (I think it might be Queen) and he became an alcholic
mousstard Brian May of Queen
Yes that’s right. His name is called Brian May, and he grew up in Feltham.
Sorry to be random, but, at 2:23; I think the song in the background is Come On Eileen!
Den: Bogart meets Clint Eastwood
Angie: Alcoholic Betty Boop!!!!
I don't speak for everyone but I enjoy this type of storytelling.
Den and Angie were such a destructive couple... yet they seemed hooked on each other. Or at least Angie seemed hooked on Den. I've known a lot of people like that. My father-in-law took loads of nonsense from his 'ever loving' for donkey's years.
RIP Den
RIP Dirty Den.
That was brilliant but evil at the same time. I'd love to get married to a certain girl on Christmas day, not serve her divorce papers 😂 However, Den and I are in very different circumstances, so I have no room to judge.
wow, they all look sooooo young
They be even older now since your post is 12 years old.
Den and angie were the tops
Despite how much we all hated Den, Angie trully deserved this one. If I was Den, I could never forgive her for such lie.
Licence fee, sell BBC to overseas and still want us to pay more to view historical content. When will the Uk population wake up to this racket.
Rip Lesley grantham, sadly died in real life a few days ago.
Ah, look at all the old timers. And Dot's hair! And Pete's Jonathan Woss voice, haha :D
Ruined divorces for everyone, everywhere. How can you compete with that? Do it on the other person's birthday? Wedding anniversary?
reg cox would not have stood by and let this happen
