      I was hoping you were going to break down how he starts open and ends closed. He clearly makes his step towards the plate which I assume helps him drive the outside pitch. But does that hurt one’s chances at attacking the inside pitch?

    I am a 5'5 freshman college ball player in Michigan and have had countless college coaches since I got up to this level tell me I to slap balls on the ground and run them out because I am fast and a center fielder. I drove balls to the fence on a line all summer but they do not seem to care. I have the power to drive it but nobody wants to hear or see it. This video was awesome. Really cool take on his swing and they way you incorporated his size into it as only a means of needing to generate more power and use your body efficiently. Great video.

    Altuve is a batting champ because he spent his youth hitting bottle caps with a broom stick in Venezueal...and as an MLB star trains in the offseason using a sledgehammer against a truck tire...It's old school....It's on his Dream video, second part...

  • @seans155
    @seans155 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Spot on analysis, he doesn't have a typical pullback and leaves his hands back high. It seems like he has more hand and body movement forward than most and his knob turn happens over a further distance. I also notice both his arms are extended further than most at contact.

  • @bricestanford692
    @bricestanford692 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video! Two other unique things I’ve noticed and wonder if you agree:
    1) his closed stance when making contact. His toe is nearly out of the batter’s box. In my mind, that allows him to make contact with the ball later in his swing path. It’s like a golfer aiming to the right and drawing the ball to get a little extra distance.
    2) his right arm is near full extension at contact (except for inside pitches). From my observation, most batters have their right arm at 90degrees at contact.
    Anyway, just curious if anyone had any thoughts on these two observations.
    Thanks again for the amazing video on his lateral movement!

    Number of MLB players under 5'7" and 170 lbs in the last 50 years: 1- Jose Altuve. Number of NFL players under 5'7" and 170 lbs in the last 50 years: 1- Trindon Holliday. Four more NFL players have been under 5'7" but are heavier than 170 lbs while Jose Altuve stands alone in the under 5'7" height category in the MLB. I'm sure there have been more MLB players under 170 lbs during that span though. Just found it interesting.

    I find it fascinating that for his size he really stands far away from the plate. I think he uses his stride leg to get into a closed position at contact and also that stride leg position moves him closer to the plate so that he can reach the outside pitch and still have power. Just amazing.

    • @MrDoneboy
      @MrDoneboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He does slant from the plate, and he does have a slight undercut to the ball. But, he has amazing hand eye coordination, when he meets the ball!

    I completely agree with your break down of Altuve's swing mechanics and total respect what you teach. Thank you! I want to get you opinion about a certain move in the swing that I feel is important and should be explained when talking about hip rotation and hands. I have noticed an oversight or lack of importance to the rear elbow and how it works in unison +/- a millisecond with the hip rotation.
    I mainly hear people talk about keeping the hands back which is true and hips come before hands "still correct" but I have found that hips and elbow drop activate as "one" and the hands are not engaged until the elbow has completed its path. This is something I don't hear anything about.? When I see these timed up I notice a + power change and longer zoned bat path. If you replay at about 8:45 til 9:18 you will see what I am referring to when Altuve takes his swing. When I coach I refer to this as (Hilbo) short for hip and elbo to help sync the moves. I would appreciate your thoughts.

    • @AntonelliBaseball
      @AntonelliBaseball  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree rear elbow will work with the lower body. This allows the hands to stay back for a split second longer. Thanks for watching!!!

    I've been following a handful of different hitting coaches/analysts on TH-cam for a while now in my quest to help my son and the rec teams that I've helped coach. I've noticed that you and Teacherman are very similar as to what you both suggest. Although, you both use very different language and strategies for getting there, it really is very similar. Not sure how you feel about me saying that. I know that Rich is very controversial in some circles.

  • @scottrobertson2608

    Could you do a video on how to keep your back arm in a power position? I have a player who lets his rear elbow get way out in front of his hands and I'm trying to figure out how to teach him a better position to get the bat in the zone earlier. Thanks

    • @AntonelliBaseball
      @AntonelliBaseball  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure thing I can try...that is one of the tougher things I deal with. A lot of younger players struggle with that exact thing. I'll do my best!

    • @the4shores
      @the4shores 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tell him to get into his hitting stance with bat. Stand in front of him but to the back side of his stance and hold the bat about mid barrel and tell him to try and swing. He will rotate and hands will remain back with elbows forward. Show him the problem. Then tell him to be more braced/powerful and try to rotate and pull the bat out of your hand. This is a good start for him to be aware of the problem.

      Just making contact requires learning how to watch the ball, and then swinging the bat to a desired contact point that would allow the barrel to reach the ball and hit the part of the ball that will make it go where you want it to go. Lets say you are trying to pull the ball over the shortstop. Your focus would be to hit the outside half of ball ... to hit it over short stop, you would need space between you and the ball as its coming. Glue your eyes to that spot on the ball and trust your hand eye coordination and start experimenting. Making contact is the easy part because we have hand eye coordination.... creating a power swing through the ball, where you are swinging to score is the mindset I teach my players. Get the contact feeling down, and then begin rotating harder and harder - keeping your eyes glued to the ball.

    It’s the ball. The math is isn’t mathing. Altuve is a great player but to think he can hit the ball harder and farther than bonds on steroids is just crazy. Bonds has faster bat speed, more leverage and more weight. Do the math. Bonds bat speed is 80-85mph. Altive 69 Max.
